American Thanksgiving In Niagara Falls

Reading Time:  5 minutes -

A  vacation to Niagara Falls during American Thanksgiving (Nov. 23, 2023) is an idea the whole family can be thankful for! Thanksgiving is a great time of year as it’s generally the kick off for the holiday season. Its pumpkin pie, delicious turkey dinner and the perfect opportunity to gather and spend time with loved ones.  Of course, in all that gathering, someone – usually Mom– ends up having to do some major cooking and baking. This year, give Mom (or Dad, or Grandma) a break and get away…by spending the American Thanksgiving in Niagara Falls!

According the American Automobile Association (AAA),  this years holiday weekend will see “record-breaking numbers on the road and in the air this year.” So if you are are thinking about getting away before the weather turns for the worse, you are not alone and in good company this year.

Though temperatures dip in late November, its generally a dryer month than October with very little snow accumulation, making the drive manageable. The long range weather forecast for Niagara Falls is something to pay attention to closer to the time of departure. It’s also a festive time as the city gears up for the holidays with many decorative displays like the: Winter Festival of Lights, nearby holiday markets and events happening just before the major Christmas holiday period.  Another bonus is the minimal  tourists that visit during this time of year making it far more relaxing for local sightseeing.  Of course the world famous Clifton Hill area, at the heart of Niagara Falls, is worth a visit with most everything open, including the Niagara Speedway (weather permitting).  Whether you’re seeking to get closer to one of nature’s most powerful wonders: the Falls, or you’d like to toss in some good ole’ fashion fun, the Thanksgiving activities this year are rather impressive.

What’s an American Thanksgiving in Niagara Falls without some Niagara Falls shopping?

With Black Friday sales popping up everywhere in Niagara Falls, Canada and the strong U.S. dollar, American Thanksgiving weekend is the time to engage in some retail therapy! The Canada One Outlet Mall will have some amazing deals popping up. It’s home to top designer name outlets such as Coach, Tommy Hilfiger, Carter’s OshKosh B’gosh, Rocky Mountain Chocolate, Samsonite, Adidas, Guess, American Eagle, La Vie en Rose, SVP Sports, Golf Liquidators and so much more.

Additionally, Clifton Hill has the top selection of Niagara Falls inspired souvenirs. There is no need to stray far from the picturesque beauty of the Falls to get to one of Niagara’s largest souvenir stores — the Canada Trading Company. You are likely to find that special something to take home after a memorable trip. The Canada Trading Co. offers top quality clothing, figurines, water globes, wind spinners, handcrafted jewelry, as well as an impressive display of Native art, totems, Inukshuks & Moccasins, dream catchers, masks and statues — the list goes on and on!

Victoria Day Facts and Information

Victoria Day is a Canadian Public Holiday that takes place annually on the last Monday of May. The holiday exists to honour Queen Victoria’s birthday who was the reigning Queen when Canada became its own country in 1867, but the holiday has been around and celebrated even before Canada was officially a country! Canada continues to celebrate it in various ways across the land, on a specific Monday in May. In Quebec, the same day was, since the Quiet Revolution, unofficially known as Fête de Dollard until 2003, when provincial legislation officially named the same date as Victoria Day the National Patriots’ Day. Additionally, it’s a statutory holiday for six of Canada’s ten provinces and three of its territories.

Not only is it celebrated here in Canada, but also in Scotland. For many of us Canadian’s, Victoria Day means that the summer season is just around the corner which is cause for great celebration… winter in Canada is no joke! When the Queen died in 1901, the parliament declared that her legacy is celebrated at the end of May.

Ontario Staycation Tax Credit For Niagara Vacations

Reading Time:  3 minutes -

For the last few weeks of 2022, Ontario residents can still take advantage of the ‘Ontario Staycation’ tax credit.

In an effort to stimulate the tourism and hospitality sector, after COVID-19 closures, the Ontario government established a tax credit this year encouraging individuals and families to take short-term visits inside the province.

Read on to see how you might receive up to 20% of your qualified 2022 lodging expenditures reimbursed in Ontario.

Overview

The temporary Ontario Staycation Tax Credit for 2022 is designed to encourage Ontario families to explore the province while also assisting the tourist and hospitality industries in recovering from the financial effects of the COVID-Covid 19 epidemic.

When completing their personal Income Tax and Benefit Return for 2022, Ontario individuals can claim 20% of their qualified lodging costs, such as a stay at a hotel, cottage, or campsite. Individually, you can claim up to $1,000 in qualifying costs, or $2,000 if you have a spouse, common-law partner, or eligible children, for a total refund of up to $200 or $400 for a family.

About 1.85 million Ontario households will benefit from the credit, which is expected to cost $270 million.

Who is eligible

If you are a resident of Ontario by December 31, 2022, you are entitled for the credit.

The credit is only available to one person per household per year. The qualifying costs of your spouse or common-law partner, as well as your eligible children, may be included in your claim. The credit cannot be claimed on a child’s personal income tax and benefit return for the year 2022.

If you don’t have a spouse, common-law partner, or eligible child, you can still claim the credit for your own qualified costs.

Eligible expenses

For a leisure stay of less than a month in Ontario, you can claim the Ontario Staycation Tax Credit for lodging costs at a short-term or camping facility, such as a:

  • hotel
  • motel
  • resort
  • lodge
  • bed-and-breakfast establishment
  • cottage
  • campground

Timeshare agreements and stays on a boat, rail, or other self-propelled vehicle are not considered short-term accommodations.

The tax credit is only valid for stays between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022, regardless of when the stays are paid for. Business travel is not eligible for the tax credit.

The accommodation expenses must also:

  • have been paid as described on a detailed receipt provided by you, your spouse or common-law partner, or an eligible child.
  • be shown on a detailed receipt, that confirms payment was subject to Goods and Services Tax (GST)/Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).
  • not been repaid by anyone, including a friend or an employer, to you, your spouse or common-law partner, or your eligible child

As long as all other conditions are met, you can claim any of the following expenses:

  • accommodation for a single or several journeys, up to a maximum expenditure limit of $1,000 per person or $2,000 per family.
  • Accommodations booked directly with the hotel or through an online booking site
  • the percentage of the cost that is required to gain entry to the lodging
  • a travel package’s lodging cost portion

How to claim the credit

For any qualified costs you incur, you must retain detailed receipts. All of the following information should be included on such receipts:

  • the location of the accommodation
  • the amount that can reasonably be considered to be for the accommodation portion of a stay
  • the GST/HST paid
  • the date of the stay
  • the name of the payor

You can claim the credit on your 2022 Individual Income Tax and Benefit Return.

The Ontario Staycation Tax Benefit is a personal income tax credit that is refundable. This implies that if you qualify, regardless of whether you owe income tax in 2022, you can receive this tax credit.

Contact The Ontario Government For Details

Please call the Ontario Budget Hotline at 1-800-337-7222 if you have any queries concerning the tax credit.

Celebrating Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day in Niagara Falls

Reading Time:  5 minutes -History

The celebration of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day happens every June 24th since 1834.

It is not known why Saint-Jean-Baptiste came to be considered the patron saint of French Canada. One legend has it that a great many French-Canadians bearing that given name persuaded the journalist and patriot Ludger Duvernay to adopt it as the name of the national society of French-Canadians which he founded in 1834. In any case that was the name he chose, and the St Jean Baptiste Association (St Jean Baptiste Society from 1914 on) of Montreal took the maple leaf and the beaver as its emblems…and Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day was born! The founding was celebrated 24 Jun 1834 by a banquet to which 60 guests were invited – Irish, US, and Canadian. Many among them sang their interpretations of patriotic songs, including George-Étienne Cartier who sang ‘Ô Canada! mon pays! mes amours!’ The celebration became annual, and gradually more elaborate, and spread to other localities in Quebec, in Acadia (1880), and in the francophone regions of Ontario, the Canadian west, and even the USA. The celebrations were suspended 1838-42 because of political troubles.

Celebrate Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day in Niagara Falls!
