History of the Casino Niagara Property

Reading Time:  3 minutes -

History of Casino Niagara: The First Casino in Niagara Falls
Philip George Bender and his family arrived in Niagara Falls for the first time in 1782. He enlisted in the Butler’s Rangers and served them with loyalty for five years. He received 300 acres of land in Niagara Falls as payment. His land spanned Seneca Street in the north, Stanley Avenue in the east, and Robinson Street in the south (west). After the War of 1812, he constructed a substantial stone home on a six-acre part of that land; this is the location of the current Casino Niagara.

Philip Bender owned this property up until January 1880, when John Humphrey Noyes, the man responsible for establishing the Oneida Company in New York State, purchased it. He founded a silverware manufacture in Oneida, New York, in 1879, and while residing in the Bender residence, he commuted everyday to his factory. Pierrepont B. Noyes, his son, established the Canadian Oneida Company Plate Silverware business there in 1916.

It was demolished in 1925, and the Canadian Company Plate Factory took its place.

The Oneida Tower was inaugurated on June 15th, 1964. This 355-foot steel observation tower was the first of its kind to be constructed in Canada using an open steel frame. Two glass-enclosed elevators and a two-story observation deck were features of the Oneida Tower. To ensure that visitors could see the Niagara Falls entirely unimpeded, only a portion of the top observation platform was left accessible.

The Niagara Tower and Plaza Limited was the name given to the Oneida Tower in 1974. Later, in 1985, this tower—now known as the Kodak Tower—became the focal point of the Maple Leaf Village Shopping Complex.

Plans for Maple Leaf Village and Park were created in early 1977, and in June of that year, it was made accessible to the general public. The $22 million amusement park included various attractions, including bumper cars, Dixie Dangler swings, an Elvis Presley Museum, as well as a wide variety of rides and gift shops. At the time, it housed Canada’s largest Ferris wheel. Since then, the nearby new Niagara SkyWheel has taken its position as the dominant attraction (which opened in 2006).

1981 Maple Leaf Village Commercial:

Many of the structures in the Village were constructed using some of the stone recovered from the Oneida Factory when it was destroyed.

Eventually, despite its popularity, the park started to have financial difficulties in the late 1980s. After taking over park administration in the late 1980s, York Hanover Hotels filed for bankruptcy and eventually sold the park and its attractions at auction during 1992. The shops were open for a little while longer, but they were finally sold as well.

The Ontario government first revealed plans to build a casino in Niagara Falls in November 1995. In April 1996, the former site of Maple Leaf Village was chosen as the location.

Since its December 9th, 1996, debut, Casino Niagara has welcomed millions of tourists.

The oldest casino is technically Casino Niagara, but there are other casinos as well. The newest gambling establishment in Niagara Falls is The Fallsview Casino. It has 3000 slot machines and 150 table games spread out across 180,000 square feet and opened in 2004. Some of the highest jackpots in Canadian history have been awarded by the 500 progressive jackpot machines. Additionally, it frequently hosts performances by well-known musicians.

For what’s happening at these two casinos, upcoming concerts, plus some other places to go for some Niagara Falls entertainment, follow our events calendar and see what is in store for you in Niagara Falls on your next visit.

Chinese New Year: Year of the Monkey

Reading Time:  4 minutes -The 2016 Chinese New Year is on Monday, February 8th, and it is the year of the Monkey!
According to a recent article by the Niagara Falls review, statistics from 2014 showed that Chinese tourists who visit Niagara Falls spent an average of $653 per day, including accommodation, with most spending their cash on shopping, dining and sightseeing. One survey found that in four years’ time, outbound Chinese tourists could number around 174 million, spending about $343 billion Canadian annually, putting Niagara Falls in a position as a top contender in places to visit in the world by Chinese travellers. The top 3 landmarks to frequent ranked The Pyramids, Mount Fuji and Niagara Falls on their bucket lists. Read the whole article here.
What is the “Year of the Monkey”? (source: chinahighlights.com)
On the Chinese calendar, the year of the Monkey starts from February 8 (Chinese New Year), and ends on January 27, 2017 (Chinese New Year’s Eve).
The Monkey is ninth of the 12 animals in the recurring 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle. Every 12 years there is a Monkey year. The Chinese zodiac is divided into 12 blocks just like ours, but differing in that their time length runs in one year increments instead of one month. The next Year of the Monkey will be in 2028.
2016 is a “Fire Monkey” year, which in Chinese astrology each year is associated with a Chinese zodiac animal sign and one the Five Elements: Gold (Metal), Water, Wood, Fire, or Earth. Both the sign and element of your birth year are said to affect your personality and destiny. Element-sign combinations recur every 60 years. For example, if you are born in 2016, 1956, etc., you are a “Fire Monkey”, and you are thought to be “ambitious and adventurous, but irritable”.

The Lucky and Unlucky Things for “Monkeys”

  • Lucky numbers: 4 and 9
  • Lucky days: the 14th and 28th of any Chinese lunar calendar month
  • Lucky colors: white, blue, gold
  • Lucky flowers: chrysanthemum, crape-myrtle
  • Lucky directions: north, northwest, west
  • Lucky months: Chinese lunar months 8 and 12

The Unlucky Things That “Monkeys” Should Avoid

  • Unlucky colors: red, pink
  • Unlucky numbers: 2 and 7
  • Unlucky directions: south, southeast
  • Unlucky months: Chinese lunar months 7 and 11

What is your Chinese zodiac sign?

Niagara Falls Casino Contest!

Reading Time:  4 minutes -It’s that time of the year when Clifton Hill takes a little bit of a break from the chaos of Summertime. It’s just before Christmas and people begin to really watch their budget. The Comfort Inn Clifton Hill room rates are considerably cheaper in the Fall/Winter months than any other time of the year…and now they added a Niagara Falls Casino contest!
This is one of the best times to travel to Niagara Falls, or to simply get away for a staycation. Fewer people travel in December than the most popular months of June to August. This means less crowds, less lineups at popular Niagara Falls attractions, some great deals and there are still some great Niagara Falls events going on in the region — especially with Christmas on the way. As an added incentive, the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill is taking part in a Niagara Falls casino contest — book a room on either Friday, December 6th, 2013 or Saturday, December 7th, 2013 and you are automatically entered into a draw for $200 worth of casino game tokens to use at either Casino Niagara or Fallsview Casino.

* Click here to book a room! You must book by December 4th, 2013*
So what is going on during those days?
For starters, the Winter Festival of Lights is in full swing! This famous festival transforms the Niagara Parkway into a Winter Wonderland that attracts up to 1.5 million tourists annually both locally and internationally. This year, festival organizers have set up about 20 Korean lantern displays to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War and 50 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and South Korea. This year’s festival features 125 displays and three million tree and ground lights. The festival runs from November 4th, 2013 to January 31st, 2014.

Conveniently, the Fallsview Casino is running the Fallsview Casino Christmas on Ice show until the final day being Sunday, December 8, 2013! It’s a thrilling high paced spectacle of world-class ice skating and features national championship ice skaters, dancers and singers that will fill you with the magic of the season. Tickets start at $25 and there are various showings. If you are interested in booking on the two eligible dates for the Niagara Falls casino contest, here are the showings:
Friday, December 6th, 2013: 9:00 pm. Click here for ticket info.
Saturday, December 7th, 2013: 3:00pm & 9:00pm. Click here for ticket info.

Make sure to grab your camera and check out Niagara-on-the-Lake, just a short distance from the Clifton Hill Niagara Falls Hotel . On December 6th and 7th, 2013 from 10:00am – 4:00pm the 15th Annual Rotary Holiday House Tour commences. The most gorgeous historic properties are decked out for the season in holiday decorations by local businesses and volunteers. The tour operates regardless of the weather.
Purchased tickets ($25) can be picked up between 10 AM and 5 PM, 7 days a week, at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Chamber of Commerce, on the lower level at 26 Queen St., Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Of course the Clifton Hill Niagara Falls Hotel is not only walking distance from both the Casino Niagara, Fallsview Casino and the Winter Festival of Lights, but it’s also located right on Clifton Hill itself where all the attractions are open this time of the year — and Friday and Saturday nights until 12:00-1:00am for most attractions! The Niagara Skywheel has heated gondolas for your comfort, so no matter how much the temperature drops, the ride is open and offers spectacular one-of-a-kind views on the Niagara Falls and the surrounding landscape.
The best value for your buck is the Clifton Hill Fun Pass, where you get 5 Clifton Hill attractions for only $25.95+tax/Adults and $19.95+tax/Children — these include the Niagara Skywheel (TWO admissions if you purchase online), Dinosaur Adventure Golf (dependant on weather) OR Galaxy Golf, Movieland Wax Museum, the XD Ride Theatre and the Ghostblasters Dark Ride — plus a bonus of 5 tokens to use in the Great Canadian Midway!

There is so much to see within Niagara Falls, this is only a short summary of events that fall into the days of December 6th and 7th, 2013 — just a little added incentive to book on one or both of those two dates in order to be automatically entered into the Niagara Falls casino contest! To get started, click here. Good luck and enjoy your visit to Niagara Falls and your stay at the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill.
