Records will fall. History will be made. But one of the more impressive feats we’ll see during the upcoming Winter Olympics won’t be for a gold medal.
It’ll be when someone in Vancouver puts on a special headset and changes the colours illuminating Niagara Falls 3,000 kilometres away. Using only their mind.
Visitors to the Ontario Pavilion during the Olympics will get to flex their brains at this Ministry of Tourism attraction. Using technology developed by Toronto firm InteraXon, they will be taught to use their thoughts to control the famed lights on the Falls. The CN Tower and Parliament Buildings will also take part in the attraction.
In Niagara Falls, the InteraXon program will interact with the Niagara Falls illumination Board’s computers during the full run of the Winter Olympics, Feb. 12 to 28.

Commuters in Niagara Falls could see as many as eight rush-h our trains commuting daily between Toronto’s Union Station and the Falls, if GO Transit’s proposal for expanded service into the region comes to fruition.
Ontario’s mass inter-city transit agency held a public information session at Club Italia Wednesday evening. GO officials and study consultants met with locals, showing them around a series of poster boards that highlighted GO’s study into how regular commuter rail service could come to Niagara by 2016.
Preliminary ideas include possible new stations in Grimsby, Beamsville and Vineland. Current VIA station sites in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines are also named as possible GO train stops. (more…)

Tough economic times took a bite out of one of Niagara’s best bargains, the annual Sleep Cheap, Charities Reap promotion, for which the 2009 version raised more than $115,000, a bit lower than previous years.
“It was a reflection of the state of the economy,” said Jim Diodati, the city councillor who created the event five years ago.
Despite the drop, it’s a “significant” boost for some charities, made possible by the generosity of Niagara Falls hoteliers and the support of Niagara residents, he said.
Since 2005, many Niagara Falls hotels have offered steep discounts to Niagara residents during a week in November, then donate their revenue to Niagara based charities. (more…)

Niagara Falls residents get their chance next week to see GO Transit’s plan to roll out train commuter train service that could see as many as eight trains a day between Niagara and Toronto’s Union Station.
“It’s still all very preliminary,” GO spokeswoman Emilia Marceta said Wednesday, at a public information session at Market Square in downtown St. Catharines. “We’re in the early stages.”
Ontario’s mass inter-city transit agency is holding a similar public information session at Club Italia on Montrose Road Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m., as part of an environmental assessment needed before GO can expand regular service into Niagara. (more…)

The Niagara Parks Commission has launched a community website designed to provide easy access to information about the operations of the parks and how to do business with the commission.
The move follows recommendations in Ontario Ministry of Tourism governance and audit reviews of the NPC undertaken last year.
“The commission is committed to being as open and transparent as possible,” said acting commission chairman Archie Katzman.
“One of the ways we can do this is by providing more information to the public about our activities and the reasons behind the decisions we make. We believe this website will help us do that.”
The website will also be used to inform the community about the scheduling of commission meetings, which until recently were closed to the public.
The website can be accessed at http://community.niagaraparks.com.
