Niagara Falls Bridge Collapse

Reading Time:  3 minutes -

In the frosty depths of Niagara Falls’ winter, over 85 years ago, a chilling event unfolded during temperatures below zero. The mighty Honeymoon Bridge, also known as the Falls View Bridge, faced nature’s wrath as enormous ice chunks gathered beneath it on January 23rd, 1938. A robust wind storm propelled ice from Lake Erie, covering the Horseshoe and American Falls. Though we’ve encountered “Polar Vortex” conditions lately, that specific year was exceptionally frigid, leading to ice bridges piling up and creeping towards the bridge’s foundations. As the ice reached unprecedented heights, the bridge succumbed to the immense pressure and tragically collapsed.

Early Days

Constructed in 1898 by the Pencoyd Bridge Company of Philadelphia and designed by Engineer R.S. Buck, the Honeymoon Bridge was a remarkable structure. With an 840-foot span, it featured a two-hinged arch, a latticed rib, and trusses connecting the main span to each shoreline. Positioned close to the river’s edge, the abutments extended to the base of the gorge. However, this proximity to the water level would ultimately lead to the undoing of the bridge.

On June 23rd, 1897, the Upper Steel Arch Bridge was completed and opened for traffic, boasting the title of the world’s longest structure of its kind with an 840-foot span. This magnificent bridge featured a single floor, accommodating double tracks for electric trolleys, as well as space for carriages and pedestrians. Not only was it a functional crossing, but the Upper Steel Arch Bridge also stood as a lovely and graceful structure, offering a breathtaking view of the Falls.

Early Issues

The bridge’s abutments faced an ongoing challenge from ice bridges forming in the Lower Niagara River every winter, given their nearness to the river’s surface. A significant ice bridge posed a threat to displace the bridge from its foundations in early January 1899. Dedicated workers labored for three weeks, clearing ice around the abutments and steel girders, effectively minimizing damage to the structure.

Collapse Event

In the pivotal week of 1938, the Niagara River surged, reaching a height of 9 feet, submerging the Maid of the Mist docks and the surrounding area. Ice tightly wrapped around the abutments of the Honeymoon Bridge, prompting the suspension of all vehicle traffic on the day preceding the collapse. Fortunately, no casualties resulted from the traffic halt, except for the bridge itself.

On January 27th, 1938, at 4:20 pm, the Honeymoon Bridge succumbed to the force and plunged into the Niagara Gorge.

The lesson from the Niagara Falls Bridge Collapse led to the construction of the current Rainbow Bridge, strategically positioned about 500 feet north of the former Honeymoon Bridge location. This new bridge was built to endure strong winds and harsh weather conditions more effectively!

The Rainbow Bridge

Pictured Above: The Current Rainbow Bridge

The old Honeymoon Bridge had issues with pedestrians and vehicles, and its wooden deck made it especially perilous when wet. In 1930, a tragic incident occurred when an American driver lost control, skidded off the bridge, and fell into the gorge.

Niagara Falls Honeymoon Bridge Collapse Video

The intense 24-hour battle between ice and steel reaches its peak just past 4 o’clock in the afternoon, as the Falls View International Bridge dramatically collapses into the ice-packed gorge of the Niagara River. Thousands of onlookers witnessed the majestic steel structure’s fall from both sides of the gorge.

    HISTORY

The Niagara Falls Canada Visitor and Convention Bureau, now known as Niagara Falls Tourism, the City of Niagara Falls, the Niagara Parks Commission, and a number of private businesses in the Niagara Falls tourism industry joined forces to create the Winter Festival of Lights in 1982.

The Festival was started as an effort to lengthen Niagara Falls’ summer-only tourist season, which had existed for more than a century. The Festival’s initial season featured a modest assortment of lights displays close to the Falls that attracted a respectable 250,000 visitors. A trip to Niagara Falls became rapidly a yearly winter tradition for family and friends as the Festival displays evolved and audience sizes increased each year.

For the “Enchantment of Disney” event, which featured over 20 animated displays of Disney Classics across Queen Victoria Park and an opening ceremony featuring Disney characters, the Winter Festival of Lights teamed up with Disney in 1992. Sadly, the Disney exhibits were taken down in 2013 since Disney chose to restrict character appearances to their theme parks.

The Festival started a nightly parade of lights with illuminated floats from 1998 to 2006.

The Festival adopted new themes following the Disney era, such as a Korean Lantern display, art installations, and interactive light shows. The Winter Festival of Lights nearly increased in size in 2021 from an average of 54 nights to 101 nights, more than doubling its collection of lights in 2020.

    CURRENT

From mid-November through Family Day in February, Niagara Falls is transformed into a kaleidoscope of dazzling colour by the Winter Festival of Lights. Along the Niagara Parkway’s journey through the Dufferin Islands and into the tourist areas of Fallsview Boulevard, Lundy’s Lane, and other areas, millions of glittering lights, captivating displays, and interactive experiences continue to enhance the yearly winter tradition.

The Festival continues to develop its themed display sections such the Royal Promenade, Frosted Falls, Enchanted Forest, and Great Canadian North with a focus on offering fun for all ages with family-friendly exhibits and entertainment. More than 50 larger-than-life illuminations, including Canadian wildlife displays, the two-story Zimmerman Fountain, a gingerbread home, a 60-foot light tunnel, a castle, and more, may be seen along the Niagara Parkway.

Niagara Falls Tourism, together with the Tourism Partnership of Niagara, the Niagara Parks Commission, and the local Business Improvement Areas, presents the Winter Festival of Lights.

Niagara Falls Frozen Offers The Most Breathtaking Views

    Reading Time:  2 minutes -

With the temperatures falling well below the freezing mark, the Falls and its surroundings become a Winter Wonderland. While the Falls itself will not likely freeze over, everything around it will acquire a thick coating of ice. The mist coming off the Falls progressively adds layers of water that freezes onto the surroundings, creating massive icicles and making everything look like its under glass. Below are a number of stunning images showcasing the Niagara Falls frozen phenomenon.

A good time to view Niagara Falls Frozen is when the weather warms up and the ice starts to melt. This process creates a beautiful scene of clean and clear ice formations along with a huge volumes of water flowing over the edge of each rock face. Always use caution when hiking  in or around these areas during winter as moisture and ice can make for slippery conditions, large icicles can fall from above and the rivers are moving twice the volume during thaw periods.

Rainbow Bridge: A Historic Marvel Connecting Nations in Niagara Falls

    Reading Time:  3 minutes -

Construction started on the Rainbow Bridge May 4th, 1940, marking a significant chapter in the history of cross-border connectivity at Niagara Falls at the time. The responsibility for the administration and maintenance of all bridges spanning the Niagara River fell under the jurisdiction of the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission. The inspiration for the Rainbow Bridge took root during the Royal Tour of Canada in the previous year when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth dedicated the future site.

Named after the original “Honeymoon Bridge,” which collapsed on January 27, 1938, due to an ice jam in the river, the Rainbow Bridge stands as a resilient steel arch bridge, linking Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, to Niagara Falls, New York, in the United States.

    Honeymoon Bridge

Designed by architect Richard (Su Min) Lee, the newly christened Rainbow Bridge was strategically positioned 500 feet north of the former “Honeymoon Bridge,” placing it 1000 feet north of the American Falls. To prevent a recurrence of the past mishap, the abutments and approach spans were anchored on solid rock, 50 feet from the river’s edge and 50 feet above the water surface.

Rainbow Bridge early construction, 1940 (Archives & Special Collections, Brock University Library)

Approximately 3500 tons of steel formed the two ribs, with an additional 2000 tons used in the superstructure and decking. A closing section of steel, around 11 inches in measurement, connected the 475-foot sections extending from each shore. The final masterpiece of the Rainbow Bridge boasts a deck height of 202 feet above the water surface, a length of 1450 feet, two 22-foot-wide roadways separated by a 4-foot-wide median, and a 10-foot-wide sidewalk along the south side, providing a spectacular view of the Falls.

11/3/1941: The rainbow bridge at Niagara Falls was formally opened during the week-end. A rainbow made its appearance shortly afterward. Hoisting the Canadian flag is Hon. T. B. McQuesten; and on his LEFT are Dr. Norman V. Leslie of Hamilton and C. Elliston Kauymeyer; bridge manager

On November 1st, 1941, the Rainbow Bridge officially opened its gates, becoming a vital international link. Currently, commercial trucks are prohibited from using the bridge, with alternative routes suggested, like the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge approximately 16 km to the north. The Rainbow Bridge is known for its efficiency, featuring 16 car inspection lanes into the U.S. and 15 into Canada. Designated lanes for tour buses and a Pedestrian Walkway add to the bridge’s versatility.

For those planning to cross the border, a visit to the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission website is recommended to review current conditions. It offers real-time updates on wait times, lane closures, and even provides traffic camera footage for a visual preview of the border crossings.

Whether a testament to engineering prowess or an iconic pathway for those journeying between nations, the Rainbow Bridge stands tall as a historical marvel.
