Each of Niagara’s 13 municipalities will work with one of Canada’s 13 provinces or territories to present the distinctive cultural heritage, entertainment, art, and culinary experiences of each pairing during their designated special night during this festival event, which will take place on a few evenings between August 7 and 2022. (see schedule and pairings below). The Niagara Host Society is delighted to offer a chance for Canadians to unite in celebration of what makes this country so unique as we continue to emerge from what have been difficult times.

During the 2022 Canada Games, the 13 For 13 Cultural Festival will travel from municipality to municipality each night, and entrance is free for everybody.

In order to travel across Canada without leaving Niagara, festival attendees will have the opportunity to sample the cultures of each province and territory. This opportunity should encourage many people to go throughout this vast country.

Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games

Reading Time:  10 minutes -

The Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games will bring almost 5,000 competitors (including athletes, coaches, and support personnel) to the Niagara Region from August 6th to 21st. The programme will consist of 18 different sports, including the first-ever women’s-only rugby sevens competition and the return of lacrosse to the Games after a 37-year absence (1985). The 28th iteration of the Canada Games will also be the first time in 21 years—and only the third time ever—that the competition has been held in the province of Ontario.

The Canada Games, which alternate between winter and summer every two years, are the most important amateur sporting event in the nation and the pinnacle of Canadian athlete development. These young athletes, who are among the finest in their age group, have trained arduously to be among those picked to represent their province or territory and arrive at the Games as the best in their age group.

The residents of Niagara will hospitably welcome guests from all across the country. As our streets, sky, and waterways sparkle with ceremony and celebration deserving of Canada’s top young athletes, spirited activities, stunning entertainment, and the theatre of elite competition will generate fresh energy in the area.

Between August 6 and August 21, 2022, Niagara will make a stronger-than-ever national splash. The Games will create a new legacy of aspiration, self-assurance, and compassion that will motivate future generations.

Summer Sports Listing

Athletics

Canada Games Park: 2021 Canada Games Wy, Thorold, ON L2V 4Y6

Athletics, which includes events from the track and field such as running, the javelin, and long jumping, was included in the first Olympic Games in 776 BC and is still present in the modern Olympics today.

Since its introduction to the Canada Games in 1973, the sport has been a staple of the Summer editions. Events for athletes with a physical disability and Special Olympics participants were added in 1993 and 2009, respectively, to the programme that at first only featured able-bodied athletes. Athletics will be held at the new Canada Games Park.

Baseball

Welland Baseball Stadium: 90 Quaker Rd in North Welland
Oakes Park: 5700 Morrison St. Niagara Falls, ON L2E 2E9

Despite the fact that the first official set of baseball rules were published in New York, the sport’s early iterations were played in southern Ontario, giving it deep Canadian origins. Baseball, a sport that has been featured since the first Summer Games, will be played at Oakes Park in Niagara Falls as well as the Welland Baseball Stadium.

Basketball

Meridian Centre: 1 David S. Howes Way, St. Catharines, ON L2R 0B3
Niagara College Welland Campus: 100 Niagara College Blvd, Welland, ON L3C 7L3

Dr. James Naismith, an Ontario native from Almonte, invented basketball, giving it strong, illustrious Canadian origins. The men’s programme in Canada has recently had a renaissance, generating top talent for the NCAA, NBA, and WNBA. Canada has long had a strong women’s programme. During the Niagara 2022 Games, the basketball matches will be held in the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines and the Niagara College Welland Campus.

Beach Volleyball

Canada Games Park: 2021 Canada Games Wy, Thorold, ON L2V 4Y6

Beach volleyball, one of the numerous activities offered at the recently constructed Canada Games Park, was introduced to Canada in the 1950s near the shores of Lake Ontario. In 2001, the sport made its debut at the Olympics. Beach volleyball made a brief comeback to the Games in 2009 and has since become a mainstay.

Box Lacrosse

Canada Games Park: 2021 Canada Games Wy, Thorold, ON L2V 4Y6

For the first time since 1985, box lacrosse will compete at the Summer Games in 2022, with matches taking place at the Canada Games Park. Box lacrosse will be played on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Ojibway/Chippewa, and Haudenosaunee peoples, also known as Tewaaraton and Baggataway.

Canoe Kayak

Welland International Flatwater Centre: 16 Townline Tunnel Rd, Welland, ON L3C 2T4

Canoeing and kayaking have consistently placed highly on the international stage and have been featured as events at the Canada Summer Games for many years. There will be numerous events in a range of disciplines taking place in the lovely Welland International Flatwater Centre, showcasing the best that Canada has to offer.

Cycling

Town of Pelham: 20 Pelham Town Square, Fonthill, ON L0S 1E0
Brock University: 1812 Sir Isaac Brock Way, St. Catharines, ON L2S 3A1
Port Colborne: 160 Sugarloaf St, Port Colborne, ON L3K 2N7

A highlight of the Canada Summer Games is cycling. The Road Race will be one of a number of unique cycling competitions Niagara will host in 2022. Riders will compete against one another in this event, which will send them through Pelham on an endurance course.

The Criterium is another cycling competition scheduled for the Niagara 2022 Games. Criterium is a tremendously exciting sport that is a crowd favourite. It involves bicycles competing against one another in a series of shorter races over several laps. Brock University will host the Criterium.

Individual riders compete against the clock in the time trials to post the fastest time. The start and finish of the event will be at HH Knoll Lakeview Park, which will be situated along the Welland Canal in Port Colborne.

Diving

Etobicoke Olympium: 590 Rathburn Rd, Etobicoke, ON M9C 3T3
Brock Sport Facilities: 1812 Sir Isaac Brock Way, St. Catharines, ON L2S 3A1

The Niagara 2022 Games’ diving competition will be thrilling for spectators. The Eleanor Misener Aquatics Centre at Brock University will host the springboard and platform diving competitions, which are popular with spectators due to their elegant appearance.

Golf

Legends on the Niagara Golf Course – Battlefield Course: 9172 Willoughby Dr, Niagara Falls, ON L2G 6X9

Golf, one of the most popular sports in the world, will include two competitions at the Niagara 2022 Games. At the Legends on the Niagara Battlefield Course in Niagara Falls, both the team event and the individual event will be played over four rounds.

Golf initially appeared on the Olympic schedule in 1900 and 1904; it didn’t return to Olympic participation until 2016. One medal, a gold one in 1904, has been won by Canada. Since its inclusion in the 2009 Canada Summer Games, golf has been a part of every summer programme.

Mountain Bike

Twelve Mile Creek: 20 Lockhart Dr, St. Catharines, ON L2R 6P7

Mountain biking is a very young sport, having only been included in the Olympic Games in the middle of the 1990s. The Niagara 2022 Games will feature the event near Brock University across Twelve Mile Creek. Races are often off-road and require a moderate amount of technical riding.

The 4km Mountain Bike course will start with a strong climb up Hydro Hill and continue to loop around the escarpment with new legacy elements like a rock garden and gap jumps to test racers. It is nestled amid the newly constructed and gorgeous trails of Twelve Mile Creek.

Rowing

Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course: 76 Henley Island Drive Saint Catharines, ON, Canada L2N 4V9

Since 1969, rowing has been a part of every Canada Summer Games. It was initially a sport for men exclusively in 1969 and 1973, but as of 1977, both men’s and women’s competitions were included, with a total of six disciplines. The 2022 Canada Games regatta, which will be held at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course, will be a benchmark competition for many provinces and territories and once again act as a stepping stone for rowers aspiring to make Canada’s national rowing team.

Rugby Sevens

Brock Sport Facilities: 1812 Sir Isaac Brock Way, St. Catharines, ON L2S 3A1

Rugby Sevens, one of the oldest sports to be featured at the Niagara 2022 Games, has taken off recently, in part because of the success of the Canadian women’s national team. In 2022, Brock University will play host to the first-ever Rugby Sevens competition for the Canada Games.

Sailing

Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club: 10 Melville St, Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON L0S 1J0

One of the first sports featured at the Summer Games, sailing made its debut in 1969. Events for both able-bodied and para-athletes in sailing will be held at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club in collaboration with the Dalhousie Yacht Club.

Sailing, which was previously referred to as yachting until 2000, first appeared on the Olympic programme in 1896 and was only omitted from it in the year 1904. Nine Olympic medals have been won by Canada, which is presently looking for its first since the 2004 Games.

With the exception of 1973, sailing has been a part of every Canada Summer Games schedule since 1969 and has always included events for both men and women. The 2013 Sherbrooke Games added competitions for athletes with physical disabilities.

Soccer

Youngs Sportsplex: 570 River Rd, Welland, ON L3B 5N4

In 2022, the world’s game and all of its popularity will go to Niagara with Canada’s top soccer players, displaying the rising talent of the nation. Since the first Canada Summer Games in 1969, soccer has been a part of the competition. At Welland’s Youngs Sportsplex, games will be played.

Softball

Southward Park: 84 Mud St W, Grassie, ON L0R 1M0

Softball, which was featured at the 1969 Canada Summer Games, will still be played in Niagara in 2022. The greatest players from Canada will compete in front of an area recognised for its fervent softball community in the fast-pitch variant and its quick-tempered speed of play.

Swimming, Para-Swimming, Special Olympics and Open Water Swimming

Brock Sport Facilities: 1812 Sir Isaac Brock Way, St. Catharines, ON L2S 3A1
Welland International Flatwater Centre: 16 Townline Tunnel Rd, Welland, ON L3C 2T4

The sport of swimming in Canada has advanced significantly in recent years, and swimmers from all the provinces and territories are currently living exciting times. Swimming, one of the first Olympic sports, has been a mainstay of the Canada Summer Games since 1969. Swimming competitors at the Olympics now include para athletes and special Olympians in addition to swimmers with normal physical capabilities. At Brock University’s Eleanor Misener Aquatics Center and the Welland International Flatwater Centre, swimming competitions will take place.

Tennis

Welland Tennis Club: 45 Hooker St, Welland, ON L3C 5H2
Niagara-on-the-Lake Tennis Club: 370 King St, Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON L0S 1J0

The history of tennis in Canada is firmly rooted in Niagara. One of the first towns to establish a tennis programme and send players to the Canadian Championships was this one. Tennis will be played at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Tennis Club and the Welland Tennis Club for the Niagara 2022 Games, continuing Niagara’s illustrious legacy of tennis brilliance.

Triathlon

Welland International Flatwater Centre: 16 Townline Tunnel Rd, Welland, ON L3C 2T4

Since the 1980s and 1990s, when triathlon first gained popularity, Canada has been at the forefront of the sport. Triathlon is a continuous endurance sport that was introduced in the 2009 Canada Summer Games. It consists of swimming, cycling, and running. The Welland International Flatwater Centre will host a triathlon.

Volleyball

Canada Games Park: 2021 Canada Games Wy, Thorold, ON L2V 4Y6
Niagara College Welland Campus: 100 Niagara College Blvd, Welland, ON L3C 7L3

Volleyball, which was initially played at both the Canada Summer and Winter Games, has subsequently established itself as a staple of the summer sports schedule. One of the most popular sports in the world is sure to deliver entertainment with its unexpected character, and Niagara College Welland Campus and Canada Games Park are set to be the stage in Niagara 2022.

Wrestling

Canada Games Park: 2021 Canada Games Wy, Thorold, ON L2V 4Y6

The first Canada Games featured wrestling, which was originally a winter sport, in 1967. Women’s wrestling competitions were added in 2005. The wrestling competitions for Niagara 2022 will be held at the brand-new Canada Games Park, carrying on a proud history of Brock University and Niagara wrestling prowess.

What’s Open in Niagara Falls Starting March 2022

Reading Time:  7 minutes -

This winter, the Clifton Hill promenade will continue to be a vital part of the Niagara Falls experience. Though most people think of our street as a summer attraction, there are plenty of intriguing locations to choose from in the winter. We like to think of ourselves as a “year-round” location, with a large variety of indoor activities to keep you warm and comfortable.

March 1st, 2022

Ontario has relaxed capacity limits in all indoor public locations and removed the necessity for proof of immunization as of March 1, 2022. In Niagara Falls, hotels, restaurants, casinos, and attractions are all open for business. All indoor spaces and some outdoor attractions still require masks.

  • All operations can go to full capacity.
  • No vaccine passport is required at any operation
    • Though some individual operators may choose to continue.
  • No contact tracing is required
  • No active guest screening is required
  • The mask mandate is still in effect but there will be some medical exceptions in alignment with provincial and regional guidance
  • Staff are still required to wear a face covering
  • Staff will actively be screened for Covid, including a temperature check at the start of their shift.

Niagara Falls’ top priority is to keep workplaces, employees, and visitors safe. Key public health measures have been implemented, and we all bear responsibility for staying informed, being prepared, being flexible, and adhering to health and safety rules.

These venues should be on your mind this winter while visiting Niagara Falls. For more information, we recommend that visitors consult the most recent COVID-19 legislation, individual business websites, and social media accounts, as conditions might change without warning.

Canada-US Border

NEW 2-28-2022: The molecular PCR test (Up to $225.00 USD) is no longer necessary for entry into Canada. The less priced antigen test ($40-65 USD) will be accepted starting Monday, February 28th, 2022. The test must be taken 24 hours prior to arrival and the results must be negative. Antigen test results are usually available in 15 minutes or less.

All persons aged five and up must provide a negative antigen test result acquired 24 hours prior to entering Canada, and all US citizens must provide proof of vaccination. Vaccinations are not required for children under the age of 12. A paid testing center is located near the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, New York, USA.

Learn more about the requirements for entering Canada

Install the ArriveCan APP on your mobile device before attempting to enter Canada.

Traveling to the United States by land does not require Canadians to present a negative Covid test result at the US border. A negative PCR or antigen test result will be acceptable when returning to Canada. It’s important to remember that the antigen test must be done 24 hours before crossing, not 72 hours.

NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES & COVID:
In Niagara Falls, New York, there are presently no Covid restrictions. When travelling to the United States by land, a Covid test is not required. Niagara Falls, New York, is located in Niagara County, which does not have a mask mandate or require proof of vaccination in order to attend public areas.

On both sides of Niagara Falls, several attractions may still require the use of a mask (ie; elevators). If you want to be safe, carry one with you!

Walking Routes for the Winter Festival of Lights -Updated

Reading Time:  4 minutes -

There a magical feeling when you wrap up your loved ones and yourself then journey along the Festival route with a hot beverage in hand to see all the dazzling lights up close. You can safely enjoy the illuminations on many occasions with over 75 displays and millions of lights spread out across the wide-open parklands.

The festival has put together several walking route options. Each route specifies where you may park and which exhibits you’ll view throughout your walk.

From November 13, 2021 to February 21, 2022, the OPG Winter Festival of Lights transforms Niagara Falls into a winter paradise. That’s over 100 nights of glittering lights to enjoy with friends and family as a continuation of the winter tradition and forging fresh memories.

Family Fun Route

The WFOL is a magical experience for people of all ages! So get bundled up and take a stroll through the Festival, the 3km path is a terrific opportunity to view the new displays as well as perennial favourites (plus it’s stroller accessible).

  • Begin your journey by parking at the Skylon Tower, Fallsview Casino, or a neighbouring parking lot at Murray and Stanley Avenue.
  • Make your journey down Murray Street hill to see 3D creatures that are bigger than life, a magical unicorn, and a fairy tale castle.
  • Follow the shooting star light displays all the way down Murray Hill to Queen Victoria Place for a winter wonderland of displays.
  • “Arms of Love,” an extraordinary heart sculpture made by local craftsmen, the Intergalactic Artist Collective, is reached along a walkway of lit trees.
  • Continue your trip down the parkway towards Queen Victoria Place, where you’ll find the:
    • Giant Gingerbread House
    • Gingerbread Family
    • Forest Homes
  • Just around the corner from the Illumination Tower, take the lit route. Before you approach the Clock Tower at Table Rock Centre, take in the stunning views of the lighted Falls.
  • Show us your most JOYous smiles with a selfie at the illuminated JOY display and share your love with a photo on one of two illuminated heart bShow us your happiest self. Share your joy with a selfie at the lit JOY display and a snap on one of the two illuminated heart seats within the clock tower.
  • Continue going via the trail of lit trees to the dazzling Light Tunnel from Table Rock to the new Niagara Parks Power Station.
  • Take a ride up Table Rock’s Falls Incline Railway to complete the loop. This will take you to Fallsview Boulevard, where you will turn around and go back to Murray Street. More shooting star displays may be found throughout your stroll, as well as the lit LOVE display outside the Fallsview Casino and big 3D stars in front of the Hilton Hotel & Suites.

Make it a proper staycation by staying overnight and enjoying far more of the fascinating activities on the following day.

Date Night Route

The OPG Winter Festival of Lights is the ideal date night event, with millions of shimmering lights and opportunity to reconnect with loved ones. Grab a hot beverage, your most fashionable toque, and mittens, and set out for a night beneath the stars (and stars). This 3 mile trail takes you through breathtaking vistas of the Falls and larger-than-life exhibits.

  • Begin your journey by parking at the Floral Showhouse. then explore the nearby illuminated gardens, including The Niagara display.
  • Walk towards the Falls from here, taking in the views of the city lights along the skyline. Is the Niagara SkyWheel visible in the distance?
  • Continue down the trail to the Niagara Parks Power Station, where you’ll stroll beneath the beautiful tree illumination path and through a 60-foot light tunnel on your way to the Clock Tower and Table Rock Centre.
  • A massive engagement ring exhibit can be seen within the Table Rock Centre, which has views of the lit Horseshoe Falls. Perhaps the ideal setting for a first kiss?
  • Inside the Table Rock Centre with views of the illuminated Horseshoe Falls is a giant engagement ring display. Maybe the perfect spot to get down on one knee?
  • After seeing Table Rock Centre, take the lit pathway to Queen Victoria Place, where you’ll see the Nikola Tesla statue and get a fantastic view of the illuminated Falls.
  • At Queen Victoria Place, a magical winter wonderland awaits, complete with a gigantic Gingerbread House, Gingerbread Family, and lit trees. Another spectacular selfie place is the “Arms of Love” sculpture, which was made by local artists (Intergalactic Artist Collective).
  • Shooting star displays, larger-than-life 3D creatures, and a fairy tale castle await you as you go up Murray Street toward Fallsview Blvd.
  • The Fallsview Blvd Entertainment District features 3D Stars, and in front of the Fallsview Casino, you’ll see LOVE and lit fountains.
  • Take a quick route back to Table Rock on the Falls Incline Railway after seeing the Festival lights along Fallsview Blvd. On the way down, you’ll enjoy even better views of the Illuminated Falls, and it’s only a short walk back to the Floral Showhouse through the Light Tunnel.

Be sure to stay overnight for some extended rest and relaxation, and to enjoy full views of the spectacular Falls.

What’s Open On Clifton Hill For Winter Holidays

Reading Time:  8 minutes -

The Clifton Hill promenade is a major facet of the Niagara Falls Tourism experience this upcoming season. Though most people have always considered our street a Summer destination, Winter can be just as captivating with many exciting indoor venues to choose from. We like to think of ourselves as a “year round” destination with many inside activities to keep you warm and cozy.

While experiencing Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls, these options should be at the top of your mind for the Holiday Season. We encourage that visitors reference the most current COVID-19 regulations, individual business websites and social media accounts for more details, as circumstances can shift without warning.

Effective October 25th, 2021 the government of Ontario released A Plan to Safely Reopen Ontario and Manage COVID-19 for the Long-Term.

This plan outlines Ontario’s cautious and gradual approach to lifting remaining public health and workplace safety measures by March 2022. It will be guided by the ongoing assessment of key public health and health care indicators and supported by local or regional tailored responses to COVID-19.

Effective October 25, 2021 at 12:01 a.m., capacity limits have been lifted in the vast majority of settings where proof of vaccination is required, such as:

  • restaurants, bars, and other food or drink establishments
  • indoor areas of sports and recreational facilities such as gyms and where personal physical fitness trainers provide instruction
  • casinos, bingo halls, and other gaming establishments
  • indoor meeting and event spaces

Limits will also be lifted in certain outdoor settings.

The government will also allow other settings to lift capacity limits and physical distancing requirements if they choose to require proof of vaccination, including:

  • indoor areas of museums, galleries, aquariums, zoos, science centres, landmarks, historic sites, botanical gardens and similar attractions
  • indoor areas of amusement parks
  • indoor areas of fairs, rural exhibitions, festivals
  • indoor tour and guide services

Proof of Vaccination

As of September 22, 2021, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination (two doses, plus 14 days) with photo ID is required to access the certain public settings and facilities, click here for full details.

Ontario also intends to allow for greater capacity at organized public events such as Remembrance Day ceremonies and Santa Claus parades with more details coming in the near future.

#2 Sip Some Icewine

It’s Canada’s most cherished Winter delight — Icewine! And here in Niagara Falls, we have plenty of it. Niagara-on-the-Lake has world famous icewine. Sweet and decedant, our Niagara wineries offer a variety to try out and take home. Grapes are naturally frozen on the vine and picked when the thermometer dips to -8° C or lower. They are then handpicked and pressed immediately to gently release thick, rich, yellow-gold liquid, highly concentrated in natural sugars and acidity.

Niagara’s Icewine Festival begins January 14th to 30th. Don’t miss it!

#3 Go Outdoor Skating at a Park in Niagara Falls

Skating at the outdoor rinks are free, and children should always be supervised by an adult. Rink status will be identified by GREEN (Open) and RED (Closed) signs. Helmets and protective safety gear are strongly recommended. Food, drinks, glass objects, and pets are not allowed on the ice.

Rinks are open daily from dawn to dusk.

#4 Grab a Timmies coffee after riding Canada’s Largest Observation Wheel

Only on Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls, can you find two Canadian icons side-by-side; Tim Hortons and the Niagara SkyWheel. First, soar 175 feet high at the peak of Clifton Hill in Canada’s largest observation wheel. You’ll stay warm in one of our climate-controlled gondolas and you’ll get some incredible pictures on the Niagara Falls (during the Winter Festival of Lights too!). Afterwards, walk next door and take a break at Tim Hortons — for Canada’s favourite cup of coffee and a snack.

Gord Deppe and Sandy Horne defined the sound of pop and New Wave in the 80’s, with hits including “Nova Heart”, “Romantic Traffic”, “Old Emotions” and “Tell No Lies”. Their album “Arias & Symphonies” was named one of the 20 Most Influential Albums of The 80’s by “the Chart” Magazine, and their song “Nova Heart” was recently included in Bob Mersereau’s book “the Top 100 Canadian Singles of All Time”.

In 2019, Spoons Released a bold new album, “New Day New World”, playing on the band’s earlier edgy electro-80s sound and evokes the fun, pop sounds of their biggest hits while transporting them firmly into 2019. Four video singles have been released so far: For the First & Last Time, All the Wrong Things (In the Right Places), Landing Lights, and the title track, New Day New World. The retro 80s movement shows no signs of slowing down. Not one bit. And as far as Sandy, Gord, and a lot of fans are concerned, that is a very good thing indeed.
