Dollar Day on Clifton Hill!

Reading Time:  2 minutes -

On Sunday, January 12th, 2020 Dollar Day returns to Clifton Hill.

Niagara residents are encouraged to take part is this yearly event with select Clifton Hill attractions charging just $1 admission;  proceeds of the “Dollar Day” event goes towards Cystic Fibrosis research.

The event is open to local people only. Proof of residence is required, and kids under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult

About Cystic Fibrosis

Dollar Day on Clifton Hill has raised thousands of dollars each year for Cystic Fibrosis and we are hoping to raise even more this year. Cystic Fibrosis Canada describes Cystic Fibrosis (CF) as “the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults with no known cure. CF primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. In the lungs, where the effects of the disease are most devastating, a build-up of thick mucus causes increasingly severe respiratory problems. This mucus and protein also build up in the digestive tract making it difficult to digest and absorb nutrients from food. Large quantities of digestive enzymes must be consumed with every meal and snack.”

Nancy Clayton, vice-president of the Niagara chapter for Cystic Fibrosis Canada has organized the Museum Day event since its inception in 1989, over 30 years ago. She came up with the idea of “Dollar Day” to find a way to raise awareness of a disease that few people know much about, while raising money for the cause. It has been a huge success ever since.

According to the organization, about one in 25 Canadians carries a defective version of the gene responsible for CF.

Dollar Day on Clifton Hill will run from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Niagara residents will be required to carry a form of photo ID to take part in the event that contains their Niagara residential address. A Driver’s license, passport or student card are valid sources of photo ID.  Children under the age of 12 are to be accompanied by an adult at the participating attractions.

Here is a list of the participating attractions:

Spring Break in Niagara Falls Ontario

Reading Time:  4 minutes -

Have you started planning for Spring Break in Niagara Falls? If not, be sure to set up a getaway that everyone can enjoy on Clifton Hill. It’s not called the “Street of Fun by the Falls” for nothing!

If you have young ones in your household, and they’ve worked hard during the school year, a Spring getaway is a fun way to reward them for their efforts. After being inside for most of winter and with a warm break in the weather, children just want to get outside and have some fun! Especially at Clifton Hill, where families will find a welcoming, fun-filled environment with experiences like no other.

Don’t Worry About the Weather

Although the weather can be unpredictable this time of year, it shouldn’t damper your experience on Clifton Hill, as most of the attractions, restaurants and amusements are indoors.

Be sure to check out the newly updated Boston Pizza or Kelsey’s on Clifton Hill, both with major recent upgrades. Inside Boston Pizza you can also play a game at the attached  Strike Rock N’ Bowl offering 25,000 sq ft of indoor fun, where you can enjoy a delicious meal and challenge friends or family to a game of bowling! Both of these are a part the 70,000 square foot Great Canadian Midway complex, where there are arcade and midway rides showcased throughout the building.

There are plenty of games, such as old favorites like Skeeball and High Striker, to plenty of popular newer additions such as Subway Surfer, Flying Tickets, Candy Crush Saga, Gear It Up, and Pop The Lock. Kids always have a blast on Clifton Hill, just check out all these happy faces!

Niagara Speedway

Now open during the week (weather permitting)! Don’t miss North America’s largest elevated go-cart track facility. The the first of its kind in Canada! Test your driving skills along the straight away, negotiate the hair -pin turns and climb the elevated ramp as you head for the checkered flag!

Niagara Speedway Hours

Another must-do attraction is the Niagara SkyWheel, which offers picturesque views of the mighty Falls and Clifton Hill. This Giant Wheel offers climate-controlled gondolas keeping you warm and safe, as you soar 175 feet above the Falls for an unforgettable experience.

Open just in time for Spring Break in Niagara Falls (*weather permitting) is the Dinosaur Adventure Golf. This one acre attraction features two 18-hole courses, life-size dinosaurs, large waterfalls, rivers and a jungle like atmosphere. There is even an “active” flame-erupting volcano that goes off unexpectedly and allows golfers to play directly through its eerie, cavernous volcanic interior on their way to the next hole.

3 Popular Ontario Trips to do with Kids

Reading Time:  3 minutes -*Pictured Above: Taking a ride on the Niagara SkyWheel, Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls, Ontario*
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, you may be thinking about taking a vacation. However, if you have kids, you may be looking for a trip locally within Ontario that won’t break the bank. You can still have a family fun vacation without hopping on a plane to Disney World. Here is a list of 3 popular Ontario trips to do with kids worth checking out:

1. Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls, Ontario

Otherwise known as “the Street of Fun by the Falls”, Clifton Hill is an obvious choice. Located just off of the Niagara Parkway with the world-famous Niagara Falls as the backdrop, it contains a number of family friendly attractions, gift shops, wax museums, haunted houses, video arcades, restaurants, and hotels. It is the place to go for daily and nightly entertainment focused around amusement for families, both young and old.
You don’t need to spend a fortune here; the Clifton Hill Fun Pass bundles 5 of its key attractions to a massive 50% discount off the retail prices — for only $25.95 for adults and $19.95 for children.
Most of the attractions are wheelchair accessible (including the popular Niagara SkyWheel), Canada’s largest 175-foot observation wheel.
At various times throughout the year, and during the entire Summer, you will be entertained with weekly fireworks displays at the bottom of Clifton Hill at Queen Victoria Park, free live entertainment by the Falls, and at many of our street’s family-oriented restaurants, such as the free live daily patio entertainment at Kelsey’s Niagara (corner of Clifton Hill and Victoria Avenue).
Fall and Winter will entertain you with the Winter Festival of Lights, which features over three million sparkling lights along a 5+km route, grand holiday displays throughout the city, and unique Niagara Falls events.

2. Horseshoe Resort, Barrie, Ontario

Located just 1 hour north of the GTA, Horseshoe Resort is an awesome location to take the kids for a Fall road trip.

They offer outdoor activities for all ages such as skating, hiking, tubing, skiing, and biking to name a few. They even offer half-day lessons for children ages 6-14 that are interested in skiing and snowboarding on holidays and weekends.

Their Horseshoe Adventure Park features many exciting attractions that happen during the season such as the Skyline Zip Line, Mini Putt, Maze, Climbing Wall and Euro Bungy (open on weekends).

Go to the Red Horse Mining Co., in which you purchase a $5 bag of muddy gemstones and go panning. Kids can take all the stones that they find home with them as a token from their trip here. For kids ages 10 and under, the pony rides are just $5. There’s also a 2,075-foot zip line for the kids to try out!

3. Scenic Caves Nature Adventures, Collingwood, Ontario

Nature lovers will love this oasis for kids! Scenic Caves Nature Adventures is located at 260 Scenic Caves Road in Collingwood, and it offers kids and families excitement, adventure and education. Explore caves and caverns, go hiking, and walk upon the 420 foot suspension bridge. How about a tree top walk and ziplining

There is a number of exciting activities to do here all year round, especially in the Fall season, which is open from September 8th until November 1st, 2015. Here’s what you can do, and the hours of operation during the Fall:

Scenic Caves Nature Adventures

Accessible Niagara: Getting Around Niagara With Mobility Impairments

Reading Time:  3 minutes -*Pictured Above: the Niagara SkyWheel. This attraction contains 2 gondolas fully wheelchair accessible*
If you are planning on travel to Niagara, but someone in your party has mobility issues, there is a website devoted to assist you with your holiday or day trip planning. Accessible Niagara will help to alleviate some of your stress by taking the initiative to test out some of Niagara Falls most popular attractions and report back on which attractions, restaurants and landmarks are easily accessible. You want to be able to fully enjoy your Niagara Falls experience, and Accessible Niagara is a great online resource to make your travel planning to this city a breeze.
Accessible Niagara was founded in the 1990’s by Linda Crabtree, a Niagara native with a condition known as “Charcot-Marie-Tooth” disease (CMT), also known as hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN). She hasn’t walked in more than 20 years and uses an electric scooter both outdoors and inside for mobility. Linda set out to make it a mission to help others with similar impairments live a more comfortable life by striving to find and locate those places within Niagara that make traveling an ease.
While navigating through her website, it should be pointed out that within her “Links” section, she also has included accessibility information websites to various other countries around the world, so it’s a great idea to bookmark this site if you plan on travel to anywhere else outside of Canada. Places such as California, Portugal and New Zealand are touched upon, along with many others from some of the hottest points of travel and tourism to date.
No Matter the Niagara Adventure You Want – It’s Covered

*Pictured Above: Linda on the south side of Clifton Hill — click here for a newspaper article that features which attractions & restaurants she recommends on Clifton Hill.*
Whether you are planning a vacation full of taking in fun attractions on Clifton Hill, an adventurer’s vacation taking in Niagara’s most beautiful scenery (Niagara attractions), or a wining and dining and theatre lover’s trip, Linda has been there with her electric scooter and has constructed a list of the wheelchair accessible facilities that she has been to — right down to wheelchair ramps and the washroom facilities. See the report on attractions here.
She has stayed at a wide variety of hotels in Niagara Falls. Click here to check those out before you book your stay at a Niagara Falls hotel.
No matter your vacation interests, Accessible Niagara even has sample itineraries laid out for your convenience.
Wheelchair and scooter users wanting to visit Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada will find more than 20 barrier-free attractions and services in Niagara Falls on Wheels: Seeing is Believing, a video produced with closed captioning by AccessibleNiagara.com:

Linda is open to suggestions and recommendations, as well as looking into attractions within Niagara Falls that you would like assessed for a future visit to this city. If enough time is allowed, she is willing to check them out — she may have already done so! Accessible Niagara will answer any mobility questions that you may have about this region.

The Comfort Inn Niagara: A Hidden Gem Steps From Endless Fun

Reading Time:  3 minutes -Niagara’s Comfort Inn Clifton Hill is one of this city’s staples. Located on the popular Clifton Hill strip, it is a tucked away hidden gem. The driveway leading to this Comfort Inn is a “blink-and-you-can-miss-it” patch of road. It’s sandwiched between the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum and the Wizard’s Golf . Once you turn down that narrow stretch of road and off the hustle and bustle of Clifton Hill, you will find the 185-room hotel tucked away to the right, directly adjacent to the Dinosaur Adventure Golf and North America’s famous 175-foot Niagara SkyWheel.
In the late 1950’s, the Park Motor Hotel (currently the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill) was built on a large portion of the former Bush estate. Harry Oakes owned the Park Motor Hotel and HOCO Entertainment & Resorts (Sir Harry Oakes Company) continues to own the hotel to this day. The Park Motor Hotel later transformed into the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill as part of the Choice Hotels franchise in the late 1980’s.

*Pictured Above: The Park Motor Hotel sign in the late 1950’s with the driveway and arrow leading to the hotel, and then the same view in 2015. The Comfort Inn is down that road to the right.
The Comfort Inn Clifton Hill’s location sets it apart from the rest. Not only is it situated right on Clifton Hill (Niagara’s entertainment and dining district), but it is just one block to the falls, and a few minutes walk from Fallsview Boulevard — the place to go for the newest and most contemporary restaurants and facilities such as the Fallsview Casino
The hotel is ideal for families looking to save time and money as the rates are reasonable and stay competitively lower than similar hotels nearby. You’ll cut your spending costs in half by parking in its available lot and leaving it there for the duration of your visit. Its close proximity to everything — literally a hop away from Niagara’s most popular attractions, make it a valuable selling point when looking for a good Niagara Falls hotel to stay at.
See for yourself what people are saying on Trip Advisor — this is why the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill was voted a “Traveler’s Choice 2013” award for being a top “Family Hotel”. You’ll notice a pattern of guests echoing the same sentiments of “location, location, location”.

*Just step out the doors to begin your Niagara Falls adventure!
You’ll enjoy friendly service, a giant indoor pool and whirlpool, ample parking, a free deluxe breakfast with your stay at the Poolside Cafe, free high-speed WI-FI internet access, and a wide selection of packages catered to what you want to experience. Whether it be tickets to the Fallsview Indoor Waterpark, the Greg Frewin Theatre, a custom Family Getaway, or if you are simply looking for a quick Niagara couples getaway, there are several packages available that allow you to experience a visit like no other!
On your next trip to Niagara Falls why choose any other hotel? Check out this hidden gem!

Niagara Falls Weekend Getaways

Reading Time:  3 minutes -
Can you believe in less than 4 weeks it’s Labour Day? Where did the summer go?
If you haven’t had a chance to get away for a few days this summer it’s time to start planning. Quite often I’m asked, “As someone who lives in Niagara, how would you spend two days here?”
Assuming I was coming from Toronto for a 2 day getaway, as a couple or with family, my itinerary would look something like this:
Not being an early riser, I would arrive in Niagara Falls around noon and would stay at the Comfort Inn on Clifton Hill of course. While check in isn’t until 2PM,  the bell desk will store my bags and we  would grab a quick bite to eat at Tim Hortons or Wendy’s.
Then it would be off to the Whirlpool Jet Boats in Queenston or simply stroll to the bottom of Clifton Hill for a ride on the new Hornblower Niagara Cruises. The refreshing coolness of being on the water, accompanied by splashing waves on the Jet Boat or the Falls bellowing mist while sailing on the Hornblower cruise vessel, is sure to wake you up after the drive to Niagara and lunch. Either way, its way more fun than a shower!

Next it’s off to the Niagara Glen across from the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens. Taking the staircase down into the Glen, you will feel like you are entering a different world. It feels like the temperature drops 10 degrees as you hike the trails of the Glen at your own speed. You can get right up to the river at this point sitting on the rocks you can wave at the Jet Boat as it comes and goes out of the whirlpool.

The next part of my day would be either exploring the fruit belt, between Queenston and Niagara-on-the–Lake, stocking up on fresh fruit for later, or stopping at a winery or two for gourmet wine samples.
Then it’s back to the Clifton Hill Niagara Falls Hotel for check–in and to relax for an hour to recharge and get ready for a fun filled night on Clifton Hill! Before dinner we’d pick up our Fun Passes at the SkyWheel, then enjoy a delicious meal at Kelsey’s, with its prime view of either Clifton Hill or Victoria Ave from its open air patios and great food at reasonable prices!

Then with Fun Pass in hand, it’s off to let loose on The Hill! The Clifton Hill Fun Pass is the best deal in town, 5 of the top attractions in the city plus Great Canadian Midway tokens for $25.95 is less than $5 for each attraction. The Skywheel is spectacular at night as is Dinosaur Adventure Golf; They set the stage for a fun-filled evening the whole family can enjoy.
Clifton Hill is still hopping right into the wee hours of the morning, and is a great place to end the evening with a night cap at Boston Pizza / Strike Rock and Bowl.

The next morning would start with a satisfying breakfast provided free with your hotel room at the Comfort Inn. Then we would either take a stroll down to the Falls or if we had purchased the Marineland package as part of our hotel stay it would be off to Marineland for the day.
Then it’s homeward bound after enjoying a great mix of excitement and relaxation for 2 days. The combination of great deals and free activities makes this trip affordable as well as fun for couples or families.
That’s how I would spend a two day getaway in Niagara Falls.
How would you spend your two day getaway to Niagara?
