Death Cab for Cutie

Death Cab for Cutie’s 11th studio album, I Built You a Tower, represents a powerful homecoming to the band’s independent origins. Crafted in just three weeks under the guidance of producer and engineer John Congleton, the record was tracked at Los Angeles’s Animal Rites studio alongside the members' home setups across Seattle, Bellingham, LA, and Portland. Ahead of the album's release, the lead single "Riptides" secured the band’s ninth #1 hit on Adult Alternative radio.

The seeds for this record were planted during the band's recent massive milestone tours, which celebrated the 20th anniversaries of their seminal albums Transatlanticism and Plans. While playing sold-out arenas, frontman Ben Gibbard faced immense professional pressure—headlining back-to-back sets for both Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service each night—while simultaneously navigating the painful collapse of his personal life. The "tower" became a psychological shield against overwhelming strain. "There's this need to find a place in ourselves to put loss and grief," Gibbard explains. "A place that can hold it so we can move on with our lives. But there are these moments where the trauma breaks out of that shell we created for it."

Ultimately, I Built You a Tower is about confronting past versions of oneself to forge a new path forward. "The anniversary tours exorcised any nostalgia in our systems," notes guitarist Dave Depper. "We felt part of this powerful force greater than all of us and went into the studio with a sense of, how can we capture that feeling and put it into something new?"

Bassist Nick Harmer adds that the process stripped away decades of expectations: "The whole experience of this record got us back to the earliest versions of this band: If the musicians in the room like what we're working on, that's enough. We reconnected with the confidence that comes with that." Far from a cliché "return to form," the album is a fierce reclamation of the core ethos that has defined Death Cab for Cutie across their 30-year history.
