The Niagara River Ice Boom is Being Lifted — Spring May ACTUALLY Be Upon Us!

Reading Time:  2 minutes -

What Does This Mean?
Well, the lifting of the Niagara River Ice Boom means that all signs point to Springtime! The ice boom is a series of 22 steel cables spanned across the Niagara River that are anchored to the river bottom. Each Winter the ice boom has been installed at the eastern end of Lake Erie and extends about 2680 metres from the breakwall at Buffalo Harbor to the Canadian shore. It’s installed in order to reduce ice blockages in the river that can cause flooding and damage to the docks. The ice boom get installed when the temperatures drop to 4 c., or on December 16th. The ice boom gets removed when there is less than 645 square kilometers of ice within the eastern basin of Lake Erie between Long Point, ON. and Erie, PA.
If there was no Niagara River ice boom, the probability of ice jams for the region’s hydro-electric projects is high since the ice tends to flow into the Upper Niagara River.
Now that it’s being lifted, it’s an official sign that there is a reduction of ice which means Spring is finally here. Due to a mild Winter, there is very little ice cover on Lake Erie, so this is being lifted even earlier than last year’s date on March 8th, 2016.
This is good news for Niagara Falls Tourism and for the Hornblower Niagara Cruises. This means its opening date should be sooner than later. This season, they are aiming for an opening date of April 1st, 2017 (*dependent on weather conditions).
This is not the earliest the ice boom has been removed. The earliest date was on February 28, 2012, and the latest date was on May 3rd, 1971.
Have a look at the Niagara River Ice Boom LIVE by clicking here
We are excited for Spring!

“Cheap and Cheerful” Things to do in the Summer

Reading Time:  5 minutes -

*Pictured Above: Tocco’s Fruit Stand*
One of the best benefits to social media is the ability to sing praises of the small businesses that you enjoy and frequent. When this occurs, it happens in a very public forum that can be seen by other prospects. Recommending a business online not only validates you (since you literally attached your name to your recommendation), but increases the chances that someone else is going to take a chance on these businesses as well.
Recently, our Niagara Falls Mayor, Jim Diodati, used Facebook to highlight one of his favorite local establishments as among the “cheap and cheerful” things to do in the Summer in Niagara Falls, and suggested Tocco’s on St.Paul and Mountain Road. Diodati says “they grow and sell peaches and plums…delicious and great prices.”
Diodati then asked locals to chime in and suggest some of their favorite “cheap and cheerful” things to do in the Summer, or hidden gems of Niagara Falls. Here are some suggestions that were made — worth checking out:
Angela suggested:
Peterson Community Workshop

Located at Chippawa Old Town Hall at 8198 Cummington Square W., in Niagara Falls, this is a casual, friendly and supportive place for artists, crafters, and art lovers of all ages. This spot provides arts and crafts programming and workshops for children, teens and adults on-site, as well as through outreach programs. Drama classes will be offered as well.
Fees: Membership – $25/year for new store members, $15/year for renewals of membership, $15/year for students of Peterson Community Workshop
You may also purchase the homemade art and crafts at an inexpensive price, tax-free.
Visit them on Facebook by clicking here.
 Deanne suggested:
Queens Coach Family Restaurant

Located at 2845 St. Paul Av., Niagara Falls, this is a popular “home cooked meal” type restaurant that locals like to frequent. They are known to offer generous portions at reasonable prices.  They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner 7 days a week from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm (8:30 on Friday’s).
Visit them at www.queenscoachrestaurant.com or call 905-374-8921.
Hornblower Niagara Cruises

Located at the bottom of Clifton Hill and the Niagara Parkway (north end of Queen Victoria Park),  Hornblower Niagara Cruises offers an intimate view of the Niagara Falls from as close to the brink of the falls that you can get aboard one of their two catamarans — the Niagara Wonder and the Niagara Thunder. Choose between four tour options: the Voyage to the Falls, The Sunset Cocktail Cruise, the Falls Illumination Cruise and the Falls Fireworks Cruise. You choose the setting that you wish to experience aboard Niagara’s newest one-of-a-kind attraction.

 Heartland Forest

Heartland Forest is a hidden gem and definitely one of my favorite things to do in the Summer — and all year round — in Niagara Falls. Located at 8215 Kalar Rd., just west of the QEW at the McLeod Rd exit in Niagara Falls, Heartland Forest is a unique natural attraction located on 93 acres of wetland. It is a land of forest trails, outdoor learning centres, home to a turtle, fish and frog pond, one of the largest tree houses in Canada with a 210 foot ramp, and streams and pools set within a Carolinian forest. Admission is completely FREE, and contains many family-fun, outdoorsy activities. There is a butterfly garden, animal carvings, picnic areas, observation and rest stations, playground, barrier-free mini-putt and dogs are welcome as well!
Summer camps are available and there are still openings available on all weeks:

Niagara Falls Clothing Exchange

This store is located at 4333 Queen St., in Niagara Falls. They will buy and sell your gently used clothing! Everything for babies to seniors is carried here, including merchandise from big names like Lululemon, Bench, MK, Zara, Hollister, Guess and so much more at $70 to $90 off retail prices.

Niagara Falls Farmers Market

Located at 5943 Sylvia Place (behind the Niagara Falls History Museum), this is a Farmers’ Market that is open year-round on Saturday mornings from 6:00 am to noon. There is currently a small building that hosts 4 indoor vendors, and up to 15 vendors outside — and live entertainment also included!
Expect to see fresh Niagara vegetables, fruits, eggs, meats and other produce from our very own farmers.
Visit them online by clicking here or on Facebook here
Click here for a post I wrote last year when I visited some other local Niagara Farmers Markets, for some more suggestions.

“Twilight Tuesday’s” and “Blues in the Park” Thursday’s at Firemen’s Park

The Stamford Centre Volunteer Firemen’s Association puts on free concerts in Firemen’s Park (2275 Dorchester Rd., in Niagara Falls), throughout the Summer on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s:
Twilight Tuesday’s begin at 7:00 pm, and here is a list of the remaining dates in 2015 and the musicians:
August 4th – David the Crooner
August 11th – Brett Baker
August 18th – Off The Grid
August 25th – Straight South
Blues Thursday’s take place from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm:

These are just a few of the suggestions made by our locals. There are plenty of “cheap and cheerful” things to do in the Summer in Niagara Falls — but this is a start!  Happy hunting!
If you have any suggestions to add, feel free to recommend them on this blog post and help out our locals and visitors find and experience some of our hidden gems.

Niagara Falls Weekend Getaways

Reading Time:  3 minutes -

Can you believe in less than 4 weeks it’s Labour Day? Where did the summer go?
If you haven’t had a chance to get away for a few days this summer it’s time to start planning. Quite often I’m asked, “As someone who lives in Niagara, how would you spend two days here?”
Assuming I was coming from Toronto for a 2 day getaway, as a couple or with family, my itinerary would look something like this:
Not being an early riser, I would arrive in Niagara Falls around noon and would stay at the Comfort Inn on Clifton Hill of course. While check in isn’t until 2PM,  the bell desk will store my bags and we  would grab a quick bite to eat at Tim Hortons or Wendy’s.
Then it would be off to the Whirlpool Jet Boats in Queenston or simply stroll to the bottom of Clifton Hill for a ride on the new Hornblower Niagara Cruises. The refreshing coolness of being on the water, accompanied by splashing waves on the Jet Boat or the Falls bellowing mist while sailing on the Hornblower cruise vessel, is sure to wake you up after the drive to Niagara and lunch. Either way, its way more fun than a shower!

Next it’s off to the Niagara Glen across from the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens. Taking the staircase down into the Glen, you will feel like you are entering a different world. It feels like the temperature drops 10 degrees as you hike the trails of the Glen at your own speed. You can get right up to the river at this point sitting on the rocks you can wave at the Jet Boat as it comes and goes out of the whirlpool.

The next part of my day would be either exploring the fruit belt, between Queenston and Niagara-on-the–Lake, stocking up on fresh fruit for later, or stopping at a winery or two for gourmet wine samples.
Then it’s back to the Clifton Hill Niagara Falls Hotel for check–in and to relax for an hour to recharge and get ready for a fun filled night on Clifton Hill! Before dinner we’d pick up our Fun Passes at the SkyWheel, then enjoy a delicious meal at Kelsey’s, with its prime view of either Clifton Hill or Victoria Ave from its open air patios and great food at reasonable prices!

Then with Fun Pass in hand, it’s off to let loose on The Hill! The Clifton Hill Fun Pass is the best deal in town, 5 of the top attractions in the city plus Great Canadian Midway tokens for $25.95 is less than $5 for each attraction. The Skywheel is spectacular at night as is Dinosaur Adventure Golf; They set the stage for a fun-filled evening the whole family can enjoy.
Clifton Hill is still hopping right into the wee hours of the morning, and is a great place to end the evening with a night cap at Boston Pizza / Strike Rock and Bowl.

The next morning would start with a satisfying breakfast provided free with your hotel room at the Comfort Inn. Then we would either take a stroll down to the Falls or if we had purchased the Marineland package as part of our hotel stay it would be off to Marineland for the day.
Then it’s homeward bound after enjoying a great mix of excitement and relaxation for 2 days. The combination of great deals and free activities makes this trip affordable as well as fun for couples or families.
That’s how I would spend a two day getaway in Niagara Falls.
How would you spend your two day getaway to Niagara?

Hornblower Niagara Evening Cruises

Reading Time:  4 minutes -

Canada’s newest Niagara Falls attraction and the only company on the Canadian side of the Niagara River permitted to operate boat tours of the Falls, the Hornblower Niagara Cruises has been off to a great start since its opening date of May 15, 2014 (see blog here to read about the ribbon cutting ceremony last month). In  just a month, thousands of travelers have flocked to be a part of riding one of the two catamarans — the Niagara Wonder and the Niagara Thunder. Each catamaran holds up to 700 passengers, with a private charter and special events boat, labeled the Guardian, that seats 150 passengers comfortably.
Until recently, we have only become acquainted with Hornblower Niagara Cruises first and foremost tour option: The Voyage to the Falls. This tour provides an up-close viewing of the magnificent Great Gorge, American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and of course the mighty Horseshoe Falls. For the utmost closest daytime views of the Niagara Falls, this is the tour to choose for an intimate encounter with Canada’s wonder.
However, this month has introduced something truly special — three other options: The Sunset Cocktail Cruise, the Falls Illumination Cruise and the Falls Fireworks Cruise.
Hornblower Niagara Evening Cruises
 The Sunset Cocktail Cruise

Hornblower Niagara’s Sunset Cocktail Cruise is an extended 30-minute evening tour. Set to evening sunsets this half-hour cruise is the ultimate Niagara Falls romance experience. Complete with on-board licensed bar and light snacks, guests can savor fine Niagara wines and beverages while enjoying Niagara Falls at dusk. The boats board at 8:00 pm, are cruising by 8:15 pm and disembarking by 8:45 pm, allowing the ideal “sunset” time for photo opportunities and memory sharing. Adults (13+) are $35.00 (+HST), Children (5-12) are $31.50 (+HST) and toddlers and infants 4 and under are free.
The Falls Illumination Cruise

Hornblower Niagara’s Falls Illumination Cruise is a truly amazing experience! We’ve all seen the beauty of the Falls Illumination and its dazzling lights and colour displays, but to see them up close and personal is extraordinary. Like the Sunset Cocktail Cruise before it, this too is a 30-minute evening tour the features an on-board licensed bar and snacks. Check out the “Mist Retail” souvenir shop located in the “Grand View Marketplace” on your way in to board the catamaran. Here, you will find merchandise to make your Hornblower Niagara Evening Cruise a heightened experience. Like the photo above, glow sticks are available for purchase here to accentuate your trip, along with additional ponchos (although they are provided free of charge) and any other souvenirs you wish to carry and remember your trip by. The Falls Illumination Cruise boards at 9:30 pm, sets sail from 9:45 pm – 10:15 pm, and then disembarks by 10:15 pm. Adults (13+) are $35.00 (+HST), Children (5-12) are $31.50 (+HST) and  toddlers and infants 4 and under are free.
Falls Fireworks Cruise

If the Falls Illumination isn’t enough, how about something truly dramatic? The Hornblower Niagara’s Falls Fireworks Cruise is it! Operating on  Fridays, Sundays and Holidays from May 9th to November 30th, plus Wednesday’s June 18th – August 27th (*Fireworks subject to weather), this 30-minute evening tour features an on-board licensed bar and snacks, capped off with a “bang” with the famous Niagara Falls fireworks show at 10:00 pm. The Falls Fireworks Cruise boards at 9:30 pm, sets sail from 9:45 pm – 10:15 pm, and then disembarks by 10:15 pm. Adults (13+) are $35.00 (+HST), Children (5-12) are $31.50 (+HST) and  toddlers and infants 4 and under are free.
Hornblower Niagara Cruises also introduces group tour experiences, complete with VIP benefits, which include:
– Extended operating hours
– Date and Time select reservations
– Dedicated motor-coach reception
– Exclusive Group Check-In
– Express Group admission to boarding
– Direct billing and voucher privileges
– All major credit cards accepted
– Downloadable promotional material
*Available in 8 languages, Hornblower Niagara Cruises offers its guests a souvenir audio tour to accompany you on the boat, and to take home with you. It’s a 30-minute narrative providing you with rich history and interesting facts as you take the tour.*
Looking for a different perspective and view of the Falls illumination and fireworks at night? Instead of from below the Niagara Falls, trying viewing the illumination and fireworks shows from above aboard the Niagara SkyWheel . You’ve never seen views like this from 175 feet (53 metres) high above the Niagara landscape. This 8-12 minute rotating journey will give you panoramic views of Niagara’s most majestic wonder! Summer-time sees extended hours on the SkyWheel, with closing times of 2:00 am, and the opportunity to time it right with the Falls Fireworks. Reservations are not made here, but if you have a group inquiry or a tour, you should schedule a ticket pick-up time well in advance of the fireworks shows. It’s a good idea to arrive 30 minutes before Falls fireworks shows at 10:00 pm. 9:15 pm – 9:30 pm is ideal to increase your chances of being on the Niagara SkyWheel during the firing of Canada’s longest running fireworks series.

For more information on any of these cruises please visit Hornblower Niagara Cruises online at www.niagaracruises.com, and for group inquiries and booking please email at:  groups@niagaracruises.com or call 905-394-3040.
For group inquiries at the Niagara SkyWheel please contact Lisa at gcm@cliftonhill.com or call 1-800-801-8557.

Hornblower Niagara Cruises Unveiling!

Reading Time:  2 minutes -

I had the honor of attending the Hornblower Niagara Cruises official ribbon cutting ceremony this afternoon for media representatives (it officially opens tomorrow, Thursday, May 15, 2014). It started off by showcasing speeches by Hornblower Niagara Cruises CEO, Terry MacRae, Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati, Mory DiMaurizo, General Manager of Niagara Cruises and the Niagara Parks Commission chair, Janice Thomson.

Following the speeches, it was on to the Hornblower Niagara Cruises ribbon cutting ceremony!

Tour time! After entering the Hornblower Niagara Cruises plaza, we then journeyed down the pathway to the “Niagara Parks Grand View Marketplace” for yet another unveiling and ribbon cutting ceremony. Here, you will find ticket booths, the “Mist Retail” souvenir shop that carries a wide selection of Niagara Falls and Hornblower apparel, and food vendors. Inside the Mist Retail is also everything that you would need to purchase in preparation of your journey on the Hornblower. Think hair brushes, additional ponchos (separate from the courtesy ponchos you will receive on your boat ride), glow sticks for all you “Sunset Cocktail Cruise” lovers (see all the tour options by clicking here), and even a first aid kit, should you need it. It is inside here that you will also catch one of the elevators that takes you down to the Hornblower Niagara Cruises loading dock.

After exiting the elevator, it brings you to the hallway leading you to the “Mist Poncho Handout” station. Go ahead and grab one of their ponchos — you WILL get wet! From there, it’s on to one of the two 750 passenger catamarans, the “Niagara Thunder” or the “Niagara Wonder”. We were taken aboard the “Niagara Guardian”, which is their 150 passenger private charter and special event boat. A little complimentary journey that I was lucky enough to catch a ride on:

It was an amazing experience! I would like to thank the Niagara Parks Commission and Hornblower Niagara Cruises for the invite to attend the ceremony, and to be one of the first to ride the Niagara Guardian!
The Hornblower Niagara Cruises opens to the public on Thursday, March 15, 2014. You may buy the tickets online by clicking here, or upon arrival at 5920 Niagara Parkway, which is located at the north end of Queen Victoria Park, close to the Rainbow Bridge and the Oakes Garden Theatre at the foot of the Clifton Hill tourist area.
Since the opening weekend also falls on the Victoria Day weekend, additional parking can be found at the map provided (video included as well):
