Rainbow Bridge: A Historic Marvel Connecting Nations in Niagara Falls

Reading Time:  3 minutes -

Construction started on the Rainbow Bridge May 4th, 1940, marking a significant chapter in the history of cross-border connectivity at Niagara Falls at the time. The responsibility for the administration and maintenance of all bridges spanning the Niagara River fell under the jurisdiction of the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission. The inspiration for the Rainbow Bridge took root during the Royal Tour of Canada in the previous year when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth dedicated the future site.

Named after the original “Honeymoon Bridge,” which collapsed on January 27, 1938, due to an ice jam in the river, the Rainbow Bridge stands as a resilient steel arch bridge, linking Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, to Niagara Falls, New York, in the United States.

Honeymoon Bridge

Designed by architect Richard (Su Min) Lee, the newly christened Rainbow Bridge was strategically positioned 500 feet north of the former “Honeymoon Bridge,” placing it 1000 feet north of the American Falls. To prevent a recurrence of the past mishap, the abutments and approach spans were anchored on solid rock, 50 feet from the river’s edge and 50 feet above the water surface.

Approximately 3500 tons of steel formed the two ribs, with an additional 2000 tons used in the superstructure and decking. A closing section of steel, around 11 inches in measurement, connected the 475-foot sections extending from each shore. The final masterpiece of the Rainbow Bridge boasts a deck height of 202 feet above the water surface, a length of 1450 feet, two 22-foot-wide roadways separated by a 4-foot-wide median, and a 10-foot-wide sidewalk along the south side, providing a spectacular view of the Falls.

11/3/1941: The rainbow bridge at Niagara Falls was formally opened during the week-end. A rainbow made its appearance shortly afterward. Hoisting the Canadian flag is Hon. T. B. McQuesten; and on his LEFT are Dr. Norman V. Leslie of Hamilton and C. Elliston Kauymeyer; bridge manager

On November 1st, 1941, the Rainbow Bridge officially opened its gates, becoming a vital international link. Currently, commercial trucks are prohibited from using the bridge, with alternative routes suggested, like the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge approximately 16 km to the north. The Rainbow Bridge is known for its efficiency, featuring 16 car inspection lanes into the U.S. and 15 into Canada. Designated lanes for tour buses and a Pedestrian Walkway add to the bridge’s versatility.

For those planning to cross the border, a visit to the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission website is recommended to review current conditions. It offers real-time updates on wait times, lane closures, and even provides traffic camera footage for a visual preview of the border crossings.

Whether a testament to engineering prowess or an iconic pathway for those journeying between nations, the Rainbow Bridge stands tall as a historical marvel.

If you are returning from a trip to the Niagara Falls, especially if you are from abroad, you are bound to offer something to your friends and family. You will want to purchase souvenirs & gifts that are 100% made in Canada, and perhaps you may want to go a step further and grab items specific to Niagara Falls. We at the Canada Trading Company offer you items that you can bring back from Niagara Falls that will delight the recipients.

Here is a list of our top 10 recommended souvenirs to buy in Niagara Falls:

1. Food Souvenirs

A trip to Canada isn’t made complete without picking up some edible goodies made with pure Canadian ingredients. The Canada Trading Company features a large space that’s packed with every type of confection, and edible sugary novelty you can imagine . Spend 20 minutes browsing its aisles and shelves and you will leave with something sweet and delicious to take home…guaranteed!

2. Hand-made Jewellery

Our store has a reputation for providing the customer with well-designed, finely made jewellery. We offer everything from necklaces, bracelets, and earrings that are produced with highly skilled precision. Much of this store provides products that are native to our country — the aboriginals were the original inhabitants of the land that is now Canada, so you will find a wide array of products that honor these folk. Our store also sells Alex & Ani jewellery — this is jewellery that is eco-conscious, made with positive energy products that adorn the body, and enlighten the mind and empower the spirit.

3. Ready-to-pack Souvenirs

Everyone gets a little leery of airline luggage checking fees, overweight baggage penalties, high shipping costs, and customs restrictions, so bringing home any souvenir can be quite difficult. That is why the Canada Trading Company makes it easy for you to “grab and go” items with virtually no weight, that brand themselves with “Niagara Falls”, “Canada”, and even some items specific to an attraction that you visited here. Coffee mugs, shot glasses, pens, postcards, books and key chains would fall under this category.

4. Clothing/Purses

You will find quality clothing to commemorate your trip to the Niagara Falls here. You’ll find moccasins, long and short-sleeved tees, jackets, hats, sunglasses, kids clothing, and even purses and wallets all manufactured in Canada and/or adorned with “Niagara Falls” or “Canada” stamp of your stay here!

5. Hand-crafted Artwork

Canada’s vast natural beauty has inspired many great artists to produce some beautiful Canadian Art. Wood and stone carvings, marble and jade, and many collectibles to purchase are found in the Canada Trading Company. Inukshuk themed gifts, and hand-crafted items made into animals that call Canada home make for excellent souvenir options — and are always one of the first to fly off the shelves.

6. Toys

If you have kids it’s very unlikely that you can go home without a toy or two! We have an entire section devoted to souvenirs and gifts for that little one in your family. We feature an entire wall and floor to ceiling displays of TY Licensed Plush – Dora, Spongebob, Spiderman, ScoobyDoo, Hello Kitty, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Blue’s Clue’s, Peanuts, Backyardigans, etc., plus Disney toys and figurines, and many toys that honor not only a trip to Niagara Falls (ie. the Niagara Falls double-decker bus toy car), but also a trip to Clifton Hill!

Remember, Clifton Hill is a kids paradise and we are known with providing a family fun experience, so expect to find dinosaur products (the Dinosaur Adventure Golf is located right across the plaza), and other toys pertaining to Clifton Hill and our fun Niagara Falls attractions.

7. Maple Syrup

This is the biggest seller, so it deserves its own category. Specific to Canada, the maple syrup production process was adopted by the aboriginals. In springtime, when the nights are still cold, water from the soil is absorbed into the maple tree. During the day, the warmer temperature creates pressure that pushes the water back down to the bottom of the tree, making it easy to collect the precious maple sap. The sap is gathered over 12 to 20 days, usually between early March and late April, according to the region.

The basic process of tapping maple trees to collect the sap and then boiling it down to make maple syrup and sugar has endured for centuries, and our pure Canadian maple syrup, maple taffy, maple sugar, cookies, spreads, butter, and candies fly off the shelves.

8. Encased Bugs

If you are an insect enthusiast, these exotic encased bugs are a top seller! Kids and adults love to collect them, and the Canada Trading Company sells everything from butterflies and beetles to spiders and snakes!

9. Photo Frames, Clocks, and Plaques

Adorn the walls of your office, kitchen, and living rooms with these decorative additions to your home. These are great options to remember your stay, and to give to a loved one upon your return home. Choose from many different styles.

10. Monague Dream Catchers

These sell like hotcakes. They are 100% handcrafted in Canada, and you can see that each dream catcher is made with love and care. No two are exactly alike. This company was awarded with the “Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada” by the Governor General of Canada.

The dream catcher is hung above a sleeping area in a place where the morning light can hit it. The nature of the dream catcher is that it will attract all sorts of dreams to its webs. When bad dreams come, they don’t know the way through the web and get caught in the webbing where the first light of day causes them to melt away and perish. The good dreams know the way go through the center of the web, and slide down the feather to the sleeper below.

The Most Popular Niagara Falls Gift Shops

Reading Time:  4 minutes -*Photo above: Canada Trading Company*
Travelling to Niagara Falls brings millions of people to this city each year. Everyone wants to catch a glimpse of one of the natural wonders of the world, and after their visit to this city, they want to bring a piece of their stay here home with them.
Whether it be a uniquely Canadian piece, or a strictly Niagara Falls-based souvenir, here are three of the most popular Niagara Falls gift shops that specialize in producing and selling quality merchandise for the international traveler:

Canadian Treasures, Table Rock Welcome Centre , 6650 Niagara Parkway

One of the top attractions to go to when you visit the Niagara Falls is the Journey Behind the Falls. Elevators descend 150 feet through bedrock to tunnels that lead and to the Cataract Portal and the Great Falls Portal which is one-third of the way behind the massive sheet of water. Then you walk on to the Upper and Lower Observation Decks at the very foot of the Falls for pictures that are literally as close to the Falls as you can get. After your tour, you exit directly into a top-notch Niagara Falls gift shop aptly named “Canadian Treasures“.
I spoke to Nancy Jackman, the Retail Purchasing Manager for the Niagara Parks Commission, about the types of products that international consumers can purchase here and I took a few photos myself of my visit.

Pre-packaged, easy to store in luggage products are the best-sellers. These are things that are unique to Canada such as their Canadian prints from local Niagara Imaging Artist, Paul Albert Augustino, Maple Syrup and Maple Syrup cookies, and Canada or Niagara Falls printed t-shirts and sweatshirts.
Nancy also creates displays that hone in on specific international markets, while still being able to take home a relevant “Niagara Falls” souvenir, such as snow globes that feature the Niagara Falls in the Winter-time, but with colours specific to their own culture. For example, one of the photos above features products with a “Mexican”-type flair — piggy banks, coffee mugs, and shot glasses, etc.
The store is a surplus of everything that is relevant to Canada. Native carvings and collectibles, Royal Canadian Mounted Police souvenirs, jewellery and glassware are just a few products sold here.
For the traveler on the go looking to buy in bulk, they love the sale items like the “3 for $9.99” boxes of Maple Cookies. They are cheap, purely Canadian and the perfect gift for friends and co-workers that always say “bring me back something from Canada!”
Table Rock is fully wheelchair accessible, and the Canadian Treasures store is open daily except on Christmas Day. Currently they are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., closing as late as 11 p.m. during summer months.

Canada Trading Company, 4950 Clifton Hill

The leading tourist hotspot in Niagara Falls is without a doubt, Clifton Hill. Besides the Niagara Parkway, the only way to view the Falls is to funnel through this very popular entertainment district. The street is alive with attractions, dining, nightclubs, and many retail outlets — with the Canada Trading Company being a leader in selling any kind of Canadian-made products that you can think of. There is something for everyone to take home from this store.
There is a large selection of top quality souvenir clothing, figurines, water globes, wind spinners, handcrafted jewellery, as well as an impressive display of Native area artwork, totems, Inukshuks & Moccasins, dream catchers, masks and statues. Maple cookies, Canadian teas and chocolates, toys, and various Canada and Niagara Falls printed purses, coffee mugs, key chains, etc. are sold here. The list is endless!
A large majority of the customer base fly here from Japan and South America. Our Canadian made jewellery and clothing are huge sellers here. During the Winter months, the ladies love the warm, wool shawls and infinity scarves, and during the Summer, expect to see a full range of ladies and men’s latest fashions, including footwear . Of course the postcards, pens, key chains, mugs, and other “Niagara Falls” featured souvenirs are always top of the list as well.
Here are a few photos of some products that you can expect to see here:

The Canada Trading Company is open 7 days a week, all year-long — open as late as 2:00 am in the Summer months and during busy holidays.

Souvenir City, 4199 River Road

Souvenir City is located on the scenic Niagara Parkway, just North of the Whirlpool Bridge and features 15,000 square feet of Canadian items and gifts. They have many motor coach companies who visit the store for shopping, snacks, and a rest break on the way to the popular Niagara Parks attractions such as the Butterfly Conservatory and the Whirlpool Aero Car, and for winery and scenic visits to beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The facility was designed specifically as a motorcoach attraction and offers friendly, professional and multilingual staff. We offer free ample reserved bus parking.
I spoke to Rebeka Janzen from Souvenir City and she had this to say:
“International groups are very important to Souvenir City because it gives them a chance to experience The One-Stop-Shop in Niagara Falls. By visiting Souvenir City, they have the opportunity to see, taste, and feel a lot of products which they cannot get in their local countries. It also gives them a chance to experience a beautiful scenery while shopping, as well as take advantage of plenty of free photo opportunities with our larger-than-life Canadian icons. We have the largest assortment of Maple products in Niagara Falls, which includes everything from candies, syrup, tea, coffee, and chocolates! Maple Syrup is exclusive to North America and its products are most popular with our International customers. Other popular items include native crafts, mugs, key chains, magnets, t-shirts, and plush animals”.

For more information on what they have to offer motorcoach companies and to book groups please call 1-866-344-0985.
