Niagara Helicopters: My Journey High in the Sky!

Reading Time:  5 minutes -

*Pictured Above: Just one of many photos I took from the Niagara Helicopters on June 4, 2015
Yesterday I did something I never imagined was going to happen as part of my day. I went on the Niagara Helicopters!
As many local residents are now aware, the Niagara Helicopters and Airbus Helicopters have partnered up; unveiling 4 brand new H130 aircrafts. This new fleet of helicopters will be used for sightseeing, aerial surveillance and charter flight.
According to Romain Trapp, President and Chief Executive Officer of Airbus Helicopters, they are the quietest helicopter on the market and will reduce noise by 50%. Its Fenestron tail rotor and automatic variable rotor speed control result in a significantly reduced external sound.
**Click here for the whole story on the partnership.
Due to the arrival of these new helicopters, I wanted to go and take some pictures of the aircraft and post them on our Clifton Hill – Niagara Falls Fun Facebook page, to show our viewers these new vessels for any future trip planning activities. Not only was I able to take pictures of the Niagara Helicopters, but they were nice enough to offer me a tour — so I jumped on the chance, and I’m so glad that I did! Having worked within the tourism industry for a number of years, this is one of those Niagara Falls attractions I had yet to try.
My Experience on the Niagara Helicopters

**Click here to follow them on Facebook**
I’m not going to lie, I was a little apprehensive at first as I’ve never been in a helicopter before, and I’ve watched too many action movies with helicopters with no doors. I assure you, it is NOTHING like that! Each helicopter holds six passengers plus the pilot, for a total of seven people…and yes, it is all enclosed!
I was originally scheduled to ride at 10:30 am, but the cloudy conditions said otherwise. The Niagara Helicopters will not ride in cloudy or dark conditions due to visibility. Not only as a safety factor, but to make the most out of your pictures. I was told to periodically keep calling back for the weather condition updates. By 1:00 pm I received word that they were ready the fly, so off I went with my camera for the chance of a lifetime!
The Niagara Helicopters is located at 3731 Victoria Avenue in Niagara Falls (at the Niagara River Parkway). Phone number: 905-357-5672 or 1-800-281-8034
When I arrived and received my ticket, you are welcome to tour their souvenir store that offers merchandise such as “Made in Canada” souvenirs (clothing, books, maple products, jewellery, etc.), convenience items such as stamps, film and batteries, phone cards, and (of course) who would want to leave this experience without some helicopter-themed goodies? They offer die-cast models, postcards, DVD’s of the flight, and much more.

Once you have received your ticket, you may line-up at the boarding dock at any point. There is no set schedule — you simply line-up when you are ready, and one of the four helicopters on flight will pick you up. Each helicopter leaves between every 2-10 minutes (depending on the number of passengers waiting). The flight covers 27 kilometers (17 miles) with a flight duration between 9-12 minutes. Due to the fact that the Niagara Helicopters opened a little later in the day because of the weather, and there was a Korean tour group ahead of me, I had a little bit of a wait at approximately 20 minutes — not a big deal at all. I enjoyed watching the helicopters land and take off.

In no time, it was my turn, and I handed over my boarding pass and was seated up front with the pilot. There is an assistant that helps you in the helicopter, buckles you in, and hands you headphones to not only drown out the noise, but to also play commentary on what you are seeing as you fly; complete with trivia and facts about the Niagara Helicopter ride.
The commentary is available in 12 different languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, Portuguese, Thai, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean and Russian.
The helicopter gently lifts off from the Victoria Avenue location, with awe-inspiring views of the Niagara Region beginning to appear below.
Beginning with the Sir Adam Beck Generating plant and the Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture, the tour follows the Niagara River from the Whirlpool area (look for Whirlpool Aero Car crossing the gorge), over the Whirlpool Rapids and the Rainbow Bridge. Then, you cross over the floral beauty of Queen Victoria Park, and soon the helicopter passes by the American Falls and the Skylon Tower. Then the helicopters followed the curve of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, which was incredible to say the least! Rainbows appeared (which I captured on camera). The helicopter then leveled off and continued along the route back to base.
Features of the Niagara Helicopters Experience include:

  • The ride of a lifetime
  • Individual headsets with taped commentary available in 12 languages
  • Family & Group rates available
  • Large windows, ideal for the avid photographer
  • On-site services include cafe, professional Niagara photo services, & gift shop
  • All major credit cards accepted
  • Gift certificates available

Flights depart daily from 9:00 am until sunset, weather permitting.
Below is a quick video of the pictures that I took and a couple of moments of video to share during my experience. Enjoy!

When I exited the helicopter you enter into a room that features pictures of you on take off. There are photographers that take your picture before you board the helicopter, and also after you are all buckled in and awaiting flight. These pictures are processed immediately afterwards and they are available for purchase by the time you exit the ride. You may take home one of these picture souvenirs as a memory of your flight. However, if you do not wish to purchase a photo, everyone is given a certificate of flight that is signed and witnessed.
This was without a doubt, one of my favourite things to do in Niagara Falls and I encourage everyone to try it out!
For more information or to book your flight in advance, visit them online at www.niagarahelicopters.com
**Walk-in’s are welcome.**

Northern Pikes Front Man coming to Seneca Queen

Reading Time:  3 minutes -

*Pictured Above: Northern Pikes front man, Jay Semko (www.jaysemko.com)
The Seneca Queen Theatre, located in Niagara Falls, is a beautifully restored 300-seat intimate theatre that currently showcases a number of live entertainment performances.
On Saturday, March 7th, 2015 the theatre is excited to announce an acoustic concert by Nothern Pikes front man, and Saskatchewan born, Jay Semko.
Jay formed the Northern Pikes, a Canadian guitar-based pop rock group in 1984, alongside band members Bryan Potvin, Merl Bryck, and Don Schmid.
As a member of the Northern Pikes, Jay was awarded four Gold records and one Platinum, with sales of over 1 million units worldwide. Hit singles included “Teenland“, “Things I Do for Money”, “Wait for Me”, “Hopes Go Astray”, “She Ain’t Pretty”, “Girl with a Problem”, “Kiss Me You Fool”, “Twister”, and “Believe”.
A couple of these songs appeared in the USA Billboard Charts, and you couldn’t go very long on MuchMusic in the 1990’s without catching many of the band’s videos within the Top 5 countdown. “Girl with a Problem” in particular reached the #1 spot.
The Northern Pikes received 8 Juno Award nominations, with Jay Semko receiving two Canadian Music Publishers Association Awards.
The Northern Pikes have released twelve albums over their career, and in 2012 they were inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Northern Pikes – She Ain’t Pretty:

“I am so much looking forward to playing in Niagara Falls – this is a solo acoustic tour; me and my guitar, playing songs from the Northern Pikes, Due South, my solo albums, storytelling and truth-telling,” said Semko from his home in Saskatchewan.

The band’s 1990 album, Snow in June, became their biggest seller in Canada and the US.  That album’s lead single, “She Ain’t Pretty”, received heavy play on MuchMusic and was nominated for a Juno Award.

The show at Seneca Queen will provide fans with an intimate and interactive performance by Semko, reliving some of the history behind The Northern Pikes.

“I’ve never had more fun onstage – the one-on-one connection we’re getting every night is beyond description – laughter, tears, singing, sweating – a rare and precious thing – so amazingly cool,” he added.

This year marks the bands 30th Anniversary for The Pikes and the band, now a trio after the departure of Merl Bryck.

Jay Semko is also an award-winning music composer for numerous film and TV productions, including Canada’s most successful internationally syndicated series, “Due South”. His new album is entitled “Flora Vista” – an acoustic guitar based journey of love, loss, spirituality, addiction and recovery.

Groupon Niagara Falls: Are you getting the best value this way?

Reading Time:  4 minutes -

When you travel, who doesn’t love getting a great discounted hotel room or package deal? Groupon Niagara Falls is a popular tool that people use when coming to Niagara Falls to save money on their trip in order to keep extra money in their wallet. Groupon has launched Groupon Getaways, a site that offers deeply discounted travel deals.  A sample of today’s Groupon travel deals includes luxury hotels and resorts. However, are you getting the most out of Groupon? Not always. Many have hidden fees and blackout dates and all of them have expiration dates. Some Groupon deals are even limited to new clients or first-time customers, and are limited to one groupon per person. As for restaurants? Some restaurants limit Groupon users to food listed just on the regular menu, rather than on daily specials as well. There can be quite a lot of fine print you need to read before purchasing any Groupon deal to ensure that it will meet your expectations.
This is not to say that searching Groupon Niagara Falls isn’t a great tool for discounts, I’m only saying to read the fineprint carefully. I’ve made the mistake of purchasing a Groupon deal upfront with every intention of using it by the selected date, but life got in the way and it never happened — and I lost out completely. All my money down the drain.
Many attractions and restaurants in Niagara Falls offer great coupons without having to search on Groupon. No to mention, Groupon is very scarce on hotels in Niagara Falls, attractions and restaurant savings. An alternative to searching Groupon Niagara Falls is to simply check around your hotel at check-in for coupon books. These coupon books, such as “Save-A-Buck“, “Attractions Niagara” and “Niagara Super Saver” offer great savings with many with no expiration dates and many with a limit of up to 6 people per coupon. So, is it worth purchasing a Groupon for $6 off admission to an attraction when you can only use it per individual or to grab a free coupon book for $1 off an attraction when you can use it towards a group? This where regular coupons prevail. If you plan on coming to Clifton Hill, check out our website as well for a page of discounted coupons on food and attractions by clicking here. Print this blog to obtain this Kelsey’s Clifton Hill coupon:

Don’t depend on searching Groupon Niagara Falls for certain attractions. Many will not use Groupon at all. Definitely do your research ahead of time because many Niagara Falls hotels offer considerable savings based on partnerships with other companies that you will not get on searching on discounted sites like Expedia or Groupon. The Clifton Hill Niagara Falls Hotel for instance offers great discounts in their Build-A-Package campaign. Pick and choose what you want to do at discounts of up to 70% such as with adding tickets to see the Greg Frewin Magic show! Or how about tickets for the whole family to go to Marineland, that you will not find on searching Groupon Niagara Falls? The point is, there are many discounts to take advantage of that you can commit to based on your preferences and within your time frame than in dealing with stipulations that Groupon offers — and to attractions and restaurants that you want to see, rather than to just those offered on Groupon.

The Clifton Hill Fun Pass is another considerable discount at 50% off the retail price on Niagara Falls attractions. It’s a package you will not find on Groupon and one that is offered year-round! This package includes some of Niagara Falls most popular family attractions: the Niagara Skywheel, Movieland Wax Museum, Dinosaur Adventure Golf OR Galaxy Golf, Ghostblasters Dark Ride, the XD Ride Theatre and some game tokens to play in the Great Canadian Midway, a 70,000 square foot entertainment facility that also houses Boston Pizza and Niagara’s state-of-the-art bowling facility, Strike Rock N Bowl!
It also pays off to subscribe to newsletters and following blogs (like this one!) within hotel websites for deals, packages and even contests that only a particular group of consumers get access to. Not only will you stay up-to-date with upcoming deals, but as a thankyou you get access to contests that you will not find anywhere else.
Stay connected to me for discounts that you will not find in Groupon Niagara Falls for many attractions within this region.

Reading Time:  5 minutes -

First off, I would like to say how pleased I am on the feedback I received from my first cheap s*#t post on Niagara Falls Deals. Keep them coming! I had a ton of suggestions, and a few of them pertained to right here on Clifton Hill, so this follow-up blog is using a few of your findings (as well as my own) of cheap findings right under our noses. Tourists can benefit from this post, as there is no way you can travel to Niagara Falls without funneling through this massive entertainment district.
Scenario: you have decided to come to Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls for a vacation, or even just a night out as a local to take in the scene. You are willing to spend money, but without the stigma of paying tourist prices! Not to worry, Clifton Hill does offer legitimate great Niagara Falls deals. With a little digging, it’s easy to find some fantastic Niagara Falls deals within a city known for its majestic beauty and within a street known world-wide as the “Street of Fun by the Falls”!
Drink a lot, save a lot more!
When you go out for drinks you are probably used to spending anywhere between $5-7 for a bottle of domestic beer. It’s pretty commonplace now to expect that $20 will get you maybe 2 drinks and enough for a pop…3 beers if you don’t tip heavy. Right now, Kelsey’s Clifton Hill during the busy, Summer months is offering a bucket of 5 Coor’s Light beers for $16.99!! That works out to be $3.40 per beer! Compare that with the money you spend outside the tourism district at your local pub and I’m willing to bet…actually, guarantee, that you are saving a huge amount of money. Only now you can throw in that instead of sitting beside Brian the neighbourhood drunk, you have free LIVE entertainment that Kelsey’s offers every night during the Summer. Sit out on the patio, enjoy the beautiful weather, drink some good cheap s*#t, people watch, make some new friends and enjoy live bands…all for $16.99…and that can be for 2 people unless you want to drink the 5 beers on your own, in which case go for it!

Looking for another good hot spot on Clifton Hill for cheap drinks and great Niagara Falls deals? Check out Boston Pizza! Not only is this bar Niagara’s premiere sports bar in the tourism district and has been since it opened, but it’s also the place to go for nightly entertainment! It’s unique from all the other Boston Pizza’s as it’s located within a 70,000 square foot entertainment complex called the Great Canadian Midway. The arcade features over 300 arcade games, and Boston Pizza Clifton Hill is in the centre of it all surrounded by games, billiards and connected to Strike Rock N Bowl , the restaurant’s only 14 lane, 10-pin bowling alley!
On Saturday, June 15th, 2013, Boston Pizza Clifton Hill will be holding its Boston Pizza Beach Party event! This event is set to kick-off Summer with prizes for best beachwear, a limbo contest, Corona girls and Corona specials all night long beginning at 9:00 p.m. Get a bucket of 5 Corona’s for $25!! Now THAT is a great Niagara Falls deal!

Let’s not forget everyone’s Canadian favourite…Tim Hortons!! Just because you are on Clifton Hill doesn’t mean the same rules don’t apply. All Summer long, Tim’s is offering $1.00 small drinks. Iced coffee, iced lattes, iced mocha lattes, flavoured ice lattes and original or raspberry lemonade are all featured and all for only $1.00! Not that you needed another incentive to go to Tim Hortons, but drinking that cheap in a place located a 3 minute walk to the Falls? Priceless.

Treats for cheap, cheap, CHEAP!
The Fantasy Fudge Factory has something for the person with a sweet-tooth and I compared their prices online with leading competitors and they really do offer the best value…great quality, made fresh right on site and more for your buck. Take their candy apples for instance. ANY flavour, not just a plain ol’ candy apple for $3.49! Dipped in chocolate, chocolate with nuts, caramel, you name it…all for $3.49! Some leading competitors are charging $6-7.

No way can you walk into the Fantasy Fudge Factory without your kids squaking for something to eat. I’ve tried it with my 2 year old and it has yet to happen where we have left empty-handed. They have a brand new Niagara Falls deal where you can purchase 3 of the items shown below for $6! You’re not breaking the bank and you can get 3 kids smiling, or 2 kids and yourself content for super cheap!

Entertainment for LESS!!
I swear to you, the Clifton Hill Fun Pass truly is the cheapest entertainment value for what you get! Just check out travel sites such as Trip Advisor and you will see for yourself the popularity and word-of-mouth positive feedback that attractions such as the Niagara Skywheel, the Great Canadian Midway and Dinosaur Adventure Golf receive. All of which have received Trip Advisor’s Award of Excellence, and all of which are featured in the Clifton Hill Fun Pass. And there’s more. You also get the Movieland Wax Museum, Ghostbalsters Dark Ride and the XD 6-Dimensional Ride Theatre ! If you don’t want to play outdoor miniature golf, there is also Galaxy Golf that is an indoor glow-in-the-dark course that you can choose to do instead of the outdoor course. That’s 5 attractions, plus tokens to play in the Great Canadian Midway for only $25.95 for Adults and $19.95 for Children. That’s a 50% off retail cost and as an additional bonus, if you purchase the Clifton Hill Fun Pass via clicking here you get an added Niagara Skywheel admission! Venture on the ride for a bird’s eye view of the majestic Falls during the day and night for different perspectives.
