The old Park Motor Hotel which came into operation in the 1950’s on Clifton Hill (later becoming the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill), is long gone, however, here are some photos and text from the Park Motor Hotel in the 1960’s.

Family Vacations: 5 Tips for Surviving Family Travel in Niagara Falls
If getting prepared to go on a vacation wasn’t stressful enough trying to get the house in order, keeping the workload to a minimum, and arranging for a house and pet sitter, you now have to deal with rounding up all the kids and getting to where you need to be — all while ensuring that the task is stress free. Through trial and error, you will eventually find ways to keep family vacations a success. Here I will share 5 tips to make for smooth, hassle-free family vacations to Niagara Falls.

1

GIVE YOURSELF LOTS OF TIME

You can’t just leave on a dime like you used to. Gone are the days of spontaneity, and this goes for all ages of kids. Packing for a family vacation requires a lot of planning out and extra luggage. Got a baby? Don’t forget diapers, baby wipes, extra clothes for guaranteed “spillage”, baby food and formula and medicine, a stroller…the list is endless. Toddlers? I made the mistake once of forgetting the pack and play. Unless you plan on running after your child 24/7 with no break whatsoever, this one is huge! Of course if you are taking a flight you won’t be bringing this, so it helps to book with a hotel that has cribs readily available. Definitely use this as a selling feature when booking ahead. If a crib is provided to you, remember to inspect it first.  Many are old and structurally unsafe, and others come with bedding– such as folded full-sized sheets– that could present a hazard to your sleeping child.
Packing aside, just getting children dressed, fed and ready to go — without temper tantrums is a feat. Make your family vacation the smoothest transition as possible. Allow time for washroom breaks and don’t forget if your child has  a tendency to get motion sickness to bring the Gravol!
2

Book Ahead and Look Into Family Vacation Packages

via niagarafallscliftonhill.com
Finances can get really tight when budgeting for a family vacation, and if you have babies or toddlers, chances are that this is a time where finances are the most strenuous. I’ve learned that you should never book your vacation more than 4 months out or you will be paying an arm and a leg. Ideally, aim for 8-12 weeks in advance and be flexible on departure and arrival times. Also, I find it helps what days of the week you choose as well. For instance, Monday – Thursday will be cheaper then Friday – Monday. Weekend rates will definitely be higher in cost.
When money is tight, it is important to stay close to the hottest attractions without straying too far from your hotel. Clifton Hill has all the World Class Attractions Within A Block of Niagara Falls!
It doesn’t hurt to sign up for newsletters on hotel chains that you already like, so that you are well informed of any upcoming room deals. There are plenty of hotels in Niagara Falls with great mid-week room deals and family package deals, such as the Niagara Falls Family Fun Package at the Howard Johnson Hotel by the Falls. Stay in the know by signing up for their newsletters, blogs and generally just doing research ahead of time.

3

Be Prepared for the Climate

Children dressed comfortably for the weather and terrain will be happier. Pretty simple right? But this one tends to get overlooked. Check the Niagara Falls weather forecasts before you leave, and make sure you are all dressed for the environment. Don’t forget hats, gloves, umbrellas and comfortable shoes! It’s these little things that make all the difference between a happy child and a complete meltdown. If you forget to bring these items, your hotel will have a nearby shopping outlet to purchase what you need.
A great bonus to staying close to the Clifton Hill area hotels, is the close proximity to the Canada Trading Company. They have some great kid essentials in there, such as comfortable “Crocs” footwear, umbrellas, hats, gloves, sunglasses, etc. Not to mention, they carry interactive games to keep them occupied in the hotel room. The old adage “Hope for the best but be prepared for the worst” is so true.
4

Remember to Bring the Tablet/iPad and Download Apps

There are many toddler friendly apps nowadays, and thanks to technology you don’t need to necessarily cram your luggage with toys to make the family vacation enjoyable for everyone. Download movies and games to go, and choose apps for your Smartphones that are very helpful for traveling with babies. For example, “KIDzOUT” is a free apps that is a must-have tool for families on the go. Diaper changing stations, kid-friendly restaurants, parks and medical facilities are listed here for the places that you wish to travel. You can add and rate locations…making it a useful parent-to-parent tool!
5

Prepack Your Own Snacks

Inevitably the best part about being on vacation is not having to worry about doing any cooking, and you’ll want to dine at different Niagara Falls restaurants anyhow as part of the whole family vacation experience. However, for snacks on the go and to save a little money, pre-pack some healthy, good-for-you foods ahead of time to slash costs and avoid any road trip pit-stops on the way because of hunger pains. Fruits, veggies, granola bars and trail mix are great options. Also, don’t forget about plenty of juice and water that the kids can fill up on between meals — keep them feeling hydrated and fed to reduce the chance of mood swings!
Whether you are planning a family vacation road trip, or via air, these are all helpful tools I found to keeping the peace within the family dynamic, while keeping the cost low and staying prepared.

Wings for Life World Run in Niagara Falls

Reading Time:  3 minutes -

Where will you be on Sunday, May 8th, 2016? I know where I will be! Niagara Falls was once again chosen to be part of the Canadian portion of a global race sponsored by Red Bull that raises money for spinal injury, called the Wings for Life World Run. The best part? 100% of the entry fee proceeds go to Spinal Cord Research. In 2015, Wings for Life raised $4.2 million for research.

Wings for Life World Run chooses Niagara Falls once again because “the majestic Niagara Falls will give runners in Canada a truly awe-inspiring backdrop to start their World Run journey. Not only one of the nation’s most cherished landmarks, Niagara Falls is officially recognized as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of North America. Niagara Falls is an international tourist destination and one of the top entertainment destinations in the region boasting vibrant nightlife, shopping and restaurants. Beyond the falls, the Niagara region boasts some of Canada’s most renowned vineyards that stretch for miles along the shores of Lake Ontario. The truly scenic beauty of the region and level terrain make Niagara a runner’s paradise. With close proximity to Canada’s largest city Toronto and also bordering the United States, runners can be expected from far and wide for a chance to run with the world”. – www.wingsforlifeworldrun.com

34 cities in different countries from across the world will simultaneously begin this race at 7:00 am EST time. There is no official finish line, because this race is very unique. Sponsored by Red Bull, the goal is to try to stay ahead of “catcher cars” equipped with GPS. There is no set race distance, as the finish for all participants will be reached when each participant is overtaken by the catcher car that will be on course at each event location. At 7:30 am EST, the catcher car will cross the start line and drive the race track. Each catcher car in every event location will start at the same time and maintain the exact same pace. Over time, each catcher car in every event location will increase pace simultaneously until the final participant is passed and a global winner is declared. The overall winners of all races worldwide will be the final female and final male participant who covers the greatest distance before being passed by the car. The winners will receive a Wings for Life World Run trophy and a round-the-world trip! Once you are passed, your race is over and you will be courteously shuttled back to the start line where you may celebrate with the others.

The catcher cars will begin at a pace of 15 km/hour, slowly increasing until they reach 35 km/hour and the last participant is passed.

The Niagara Falls Course

The Wings for Life World Run in Niagara Falls starts at Kingsbridge Park. The route then heads north on the Niagara Parkway along the picturesque Niagara River for 4 kilometers. At the intersection of Murray St. and Niagara Parkway, participants will then head south along Niagara Parkway, passing the majestic Niagara Falls twice. Participants will continue along Niagara Parkway for 17 kilometers, then head west into the town of Fort Erie. The track then follows a series of rural country roads, looping through 3 different districts including Niagara Falls, Welland, and Thorold. The run ends at the 100 kilometer mark just north of historic Lundy’s Lane. Refreshment stations and bus stops will be located every 5 kilometers along the route, where participants who have been passed by the catcher car will be shuttled back to the start gate at Kingsbridge Park.

The Comfort Inn Niagara: A Hidden Gem Steps From Endless Fun

Reading Time:  3 minutes -

Niagara’s Comfort Inn Clifton Hill is one of this city’s staples. Located on the popular Clifton Hill strip, it is a tucked away hidden gem. The driveway leading to this Comfort Inn is a “blink-and-you-can-miss-it” patch of road. It’s sandwiched between the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum and the Wizard’s Golf . Once you turn down that narrow stretch of road and off the hustle and bustle of Clifton Hill, you will find the 185-room hotel tucked away to the right, directly adjacent to the Dinosaur Adventure Golf and North America’s famous 175-foot Niagara SkyWheel.
In the late 1950’s, the Park Motor Hotel (currently the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill) was built on a large portion of the former Bush estate. Harry Oakes owned the Park Motor Hotel and HOCO Entertainment & Resorts (Sir Harry Oakes Company) continues to own the hotel to this day. The Park Motor Hotel later transformed into the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill as part of the Choice Hotels franchise in the late 1980’s.

*Pictured Above: The Park Motor Hotel sign in the late 1950’s with the driveway and arrow leading to the hotel, and then the same view in 2015. The Comfort Inn is down that road to the right.
The Comfort Inn Clifton Hill’s location sets it apart from the rest. Not only is it situated right on Clifton Hill (Niagara’s entertainment and dining district), but it is just one block to the falls, and a few minutes walk from Fallsview Boulevard — the place to go for the newest and most contemporary restaurants and facilities such as the Fallsview Casino
The hotel is ideal for families looking to save time and money as the rates are reasonable and stay competitively lower than similar hotels nearby. You’ll cut your spending costs in half by parking in its available lot and leaving it there for the duration of your visit. Its close proximity to everything — literally a hop away from Niagara’s most popular attractions, make it a valuable selling point when looking for a good Niagara Falls hotel to stay at.
See for yourself what people are saying on Trip Advisor — this is why the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill was voted a “Traveler’s Choice 2013” award for being a top “Family Hotel”. You’ll notice a pattern of guests echoing the same sentiments of “location, location, location”.

*Just step out the doors to begin your Niagara Falls adventure!
You’ll enjoy friendly service, a giant indoor pool and whirlpool, ample parking, a free deluxe breakfast with your stay at the Poolside Cafe, free high-speed WI-FI internet access, and a wide selection of packages catered to what you want to experience. Whether it be tickets to the Fallsview Indoor Waterpark, the Greg Frewin Theatre, a custom Family Getaway, or if you are simply looking for a quick Niagara couples getaway, there are several packages available that allow you to experience a visit like no other!
On your next trip to Niagara Falls why choose any other hotel? Check out this hidden gem!

Visit Niagara and Maintain Your Exercise with our Hotel Workout

Reading Time:  5 minutes -

We are fresh into the New Year and we all know that one of the most popular resolutions made is to maintain a healthier lifestyle. Now, let’s say you go on vacation and you have no access to a hotel gym — or what if it’s too cold to venture outdoors for a walk, bike ride, or a run? This is a position you may run into when you visit Niagara Falls this time of the year. The view of the Niagara Falls during the Winter months is breathtaking, hotel rates plummet, and there are no line-ups at any attractions, but you may be faced wondering how to keep your resolutions in check.
If the Niagara weather is much too cold to be outside for too long, here are a few hotel workout moves to maintain your fitness while on vacation:
#1. Make use of the hotel pool if there is one available

*Pictured Above: Tropical Pool & Whirlpool at the Clifton Hill Niagara Falls Hotel*
If the Niagara Falls hotel that you are staying at doesn’t have a gym available, see if they have a pool. Swimming is an excellent way to keep fit with several health benefits. It is easier on the joints, therefore there is less impact, making it a great exercise option for most people. If you have health conditions such as arthritis symptoms, it’s one of the best and less painful exercises.
Most hotel pools don’t have the length you require to do laps without having to turn continuously, and/or you may be sharing the pool with other families that make it harder to manuever around. So here is a good 12 minute set that will make you feel the burn without having to move far from one section of the pool. Repeat this set as many times necessary to get in a full calorie-burn workout tailored to you, or after you finish the first set, increase each time by 1 minute, etc.:

  • 5 x 1 minute freestyle kicking, hands raised above head
  • 30 seconds rest between each minute, treading water
  • 3 x 1 minute dolphin kicking, hands crossed over chest
  • 15 seconds rest between each minute, treading water
  • 1 minute vertical breaststroke or eggbeater kick

#2. Workout in your hotel room — no equipment necessary
Here is a workout that will get your heart pumping without any equipment at all and without disturbing any other hotel guests in the room beside you or below you.

THE HOTEL WORKOUT

Squat/Lunge Combo – 10 reps

Sit Ups – 10 reps

Push Ups – 10 reps

Side Lunges – 10 reps per side

V-Sit Ups – 10 reps

Jumping Jacks – 10 reps

Push through this workout continuously until you have reached the desired time or until you simply feel like you can not continue. Aim for at least a 20-minute workout if you have the time.

#3. Make use of the hotel room furniture — be careful! Only use if it’s safe!

Move #1: Off the bed push-ups:

When you really want to make your push-ups a little more intense to engage your core, chest, and arms, try this move. Obviously the further out your body is from the bed, the harder the move will become because you are using more body weight. Want to make it easier? Move back further onto the bed so that your knees are completely rested on the bed. Aim for 25 reps.

Move #2: Chair squats:

Stand a couple of feet from a chair, extend your hands in front of you and lower your body as though you’re going to sit in the chair behind you. Once your glutes gently tap the chair, then push yourself back up into a standing position. For a more challenging workout, lift one leg off the floor for single-leg squats. Aim for 25 reps.

Move#3: Bicycle crunches on the bed:

This forces your abdominal muscles to work that much harder because of the soft surface which you are lying on. You must fully stabilize your core in order to achieve a successful crunch. Aim for 25 reps.

Move #4: Chair dips:

This is an excellent move to engage your triceps. Using a desk chair, sit upright on the edge of the chair, place your hands on the chair next to your hips. Your arms are straight and your fingers hang off the chair’s edge. Your knees are bent with your feet flat on the floor. The weight of your body is supported in your hands as you slide your hips off the chair. Perform the dip by bending your elbows to lower yourself and then straighten your arms to return to the starting position. Aim for 25 reps.

Move #5: Door pull-ups:

*Only do if it’s stable enough!*

Prop open a door and use the frame to pull yourself up if you can reach a wide enough grip. Aim for 25 reps.

Do each move as many times over until you reached the duration that you wish for a full workout.

If I Don’t Exercise, How Fast Will I Lose Muscle and Endurance?

According to www.exercise.about.com, if you decide to use your vacation to rest from exercise entirely, you can lose aerobic fitness (as a general guideline) at 5-10% in three weeks. However, how fast you lose endurance and/or muscle depends mostly on your genetics.

All your gains could be gone after about 2 months of inactivity.

Taking a week off probably won’t make much of a difference, but any more than that it may be harder to get back to your previous levels. Finding ways through a quick and easy hotel workout  can help you stay as active as you can, help you avoid weight gain and make the transition back to real life a little easier.

Obviously when the weather is nicer if you are traveling here to Niagara Falls, you can hit up all our beautiful trails, go for a run, go bike riding, and go on a hike. Places like the Niagara Glen are just one of many excellent trails to check out. In the meantime, try out a couple of these workouts when you visit Niagara during these chilly Winter months.

If you are looking to book a trip to Niagara Falls in the Winter months, now is the time to book your stay. The off-peak months tend to be October, and January through to March (excluding Family Day weekend and March Break). Here at the Clifton Hill Niagara Falls Hotel our hotel rates drastically reduce. Visit Niagara and book a stay with us to be in the center of all the action and only a 5 minute walk to the Horseshoe Falls and all of Niagara’s most popular attractions.

Northern Pikes Front Man coming to Seneca Queen

Reading Time:  3 minutes -

*Pictured Above: Northern Pikes front man, Jay Semko (www.jaysemko.com)
The Seneca Queen Theatre, located in Niagara Falls, is a beautifully restored 300-seat intimate theatre that currently showcases a number of live entertainment performances.
On Saturday, March 7th, 2015 the theatre is excited to announce an acoustic concert by Nothern Pikes front man, and Saskatchewan born, Jay Semko.
Jay formed the Northern Pikes, a Canadian guitar-based pop rock group in 1984, alongside band members Bryan Potvin, Merl Bryck, and Don Schmid.
As a member of the Northern Pikes, Jay was awarded four Gold records and one Platinum, with sales of over 1 million units worldwide. Hit singles included “Teenland“, “Things I Do for Money”, “Wait for Me”, “Hopes Go Astray”, “She Ain’t Pretty”, “Girl with a Problem”, “Kiss Me You Fool”, “Twister”, and “Believe”.
A couple of these songs appeared in the USA Billboard Charts, and you couldn’t go very long on MuchMusic in the 1990’s without catching many of the band’s videos within the Top 5 countdown. “Girl with a Problem” in particular reached the #1 spot.
The Northern Pikes received 8 Juno Award nominations, with Jay Semko receiving two Canadian Music Publishers Association Awards.
The Northern Pikes have released twelve albums over their career, and in 2012 they were inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Northern Pikes – She Ain’t Pretty:

“I am so much looking forward to playing in Niagara Falls – this is a solo acoustic tour; me and my guitar, playing songs from the Northern Pikes, Due South, my solo albums, storytelling and truth-telling,” said Semko from his home in Saskatchewan.

The band’s 1990 album, Snow in June, became their biggest seller in Canada and the US.  That album’s lead single, “She Ain’t Pretty”, received heavy play on MuchMusic and was nominated for a Juno Award.

The show at Seneca Queen will provide fans with an intimate and interactive performance by Semko, reliving some of the history behind The Northern Pikes.

“I’ve never had more fun onstage – the one-on-one connection we’re getting every night is beyond description – laughter, tears, singing, sweating – a rare and precious thing – so amazingly cool,” he added.

This year marks the bands 30th Anniversary for The Pikes and the band, now a trio after the departure of Merl Bryck.

Jay Semko is also an award-winning music composer for numerous film and TV productions, including Canada’s most successful internationally syndicated series, “Due South”. His new album is entitled “Flora Vista” – an acoustic guitar based journey of love, loss, spirituality, addiction and recovery.

This package is offered on Friday or Saturday nights only (excluding Holiday long weekends and March Break) and could be the perfect pre or post-Valentine’s Day gift! Niagara Falls has always been known as the “Honeymoon Capital of the World” for a reason — the majestic beauty of the Niagara Falls and the Niagara Parks that surround it, is the perfect setting for romance. The Niagara Falls One Night Getaway Package includes:

It is literally only a short 5 minute walk down Clifton Hill to one of the main lookout points of the Niagara Falls and the hotel is central to all Clifton Hill attractions —  with gorgeous balcony views of Canada’s largest observation wheel, the Niagara SkyWheel — which leads me to the next special offer that the Niagara Falls One Night Getaway Package contains….
*Two Niagara SkyWheel tickets

It’s the perfect perspective to view the Niagara Falls — the Niagara SkyWheel already sits high on Clifton Hill as it is, but then it soars you an additional 175 feet, to experience a once in a lifetime view of the Falls, the Niagara River, Clifton Hill…and the city! These tickets are good day or night, whether it’s cold or hot, through sunshine or sleet. Every gondola is enclosed and climate controlled for your comfort. Take in the spectacular view before or after dinner — because that too is included in this Niagara Falls One Night Getaway Package offer…
*$20.00 Dining Voucher at Boston Pizza Clifton Hill or Kelsey’s (on site)
Both of these restaurants offer an extensive menu of affordable options and something delicious for everyone to enjoy. Boston Pizza Clifton Hill is unique in that this is the only one located inside a massive entertainment and gaming facility. Over 300 arcade games are inside the same building, with 2 bars (each housing numerous tv’s continuously playing your favourite sports), and containing a full-lane bowling centre called Strike Rock N Bowl! It’s Niagara’s go-to place to sit down, relax and catch the game or to experience nightlife on another level compared to the typical restaurant or bar.

Choose Kelsey’s (on the corner of Clifton Hill and Victoria Av.) for a more laid-back atmosphere. Delicious menu items abound, drink specials and a place to unwind and socialize with your loved ones, family and friends are the reason to choose this particular Kelsey’s. It’s a friendly place, with windows all along the one side of the building overlooking the exciting lights and action of the Clifton Hill streetscape. The warmer months see nightly entertainment on the patio that offers plenty of seating. The beauty of choosing Kelsey’s as part of the Niagara Falls One Night Package Getaway, is that it is connected to the Clifton Hill Niagara Falls Hotel. No need to even leave the hotel if the weather isn’t up to par! And renting a car? Absolutely no need with this package offer. Everything is located just steps away!

This is the package to choose for an inexpensive one night getaway. Whether it be for a romantic night, or simply to get away and unwind, it’s the ideal package.
