New Niagara Falls Attraction Now Open: Wizard’s Golf!

Reading Time:  2 minutes -

People are already raving about our new Niagara Falls attraction, Wizard’s Golf. It opened on the evening of Good Friday on Easter weekend and has been a huge hit so far. And it’s easy to see why…

*Pictured Above: The rear building of Wizard’s Golf*

I have been following the progress of Wizard’s Golf for the past couple of weeks. The construction moved along fast and furious on the exterior of the building. In no time, it seemed that the final touches were being implemented with the installation of the castle turrets. Before I knew it, the sign was up and I was allowed entry into this new Niagara Falls attraction set to take you on a journey through fantasy and intrigue, along an 18 hole glow-in-the-dark miniature golf course.

*Pictured Above: Some progress photos of the exterior of the Wizard’s Golf*
However, nothing prepared me for the brightly lit, amazing murals, exhibits and obstacles that awaited me on the interior of this building. I walked inside and descended the 20 or so stairs that leads you to the first hole. From the top of the stairwell (there is also an elevator making this course wheelchair and stroller accessible), you can literally see the “glow” of colourful lights that await you to enter this world of make-believe.

Solving Niagara: Explore Niagara Falls Through an Urban Race!

Reading Time:  3 minutes -Niagara Falls has an exciting event coming up in just under two weeks time. Solving Niagara: Don’t FALLS Behind Urban Race is an Amazing Race inspired event that challenges its participants through mental clues and physical challenges in order to get you and your partner to your next checkpoint in Niagara Falls. The date of this event is on Saturday, April 5th and you need to sign up in teams of two at www.niagaracollege.ca/solvingniagara. The fee is $35 per person with proceeds in support of the Many Hands Project who’s mission is “To develop community co-operation and pride through volunteer driven projects aimed at assisting non-profit organizations in the Niagara Region”, with focus on raising money for the Upper Deck Youth Centre in Vineland. Niagara College’s construction students will help to build and renovate this facility.

Solving Niagara requires each team to be given clues leading them to different pit stops and detours in the area. At each checkpoint, a type of physical, mental or photo challenge will be completed to receive the next clue and move on to the next challenge.
Sign in starts at 10am on race day and the race begins at 11:00am and will take roughly 3-3.5 hours to complete. The race will conclude at 4:00pm. In order to participate, please make sure one of you on your team has a smartphone. This is required for a couple of the clues where uploading photos to social media forums is mandatory.
The race will begin at the Oakes Garden Theatre, which was also the starting point of CTV’s “Amazing Race Canada”. In conjunction with this, Solving Niagara is excited to announce that this event will be hosted by Jet and Dave from the “Amazing Race Canada”!

*Pictured Above: Jet and Dave from “Amazing Race Canada”. Below: See a clip of the duo that guaranteed them the spot in the show!*

The event will conclude with a celebration at Boston Pizza Clifton Hill where participants can relax, eat, drink, watch Saturday’s sports action on TV, and socialize.

There will be prizes given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams as well as teams who fundraised the most money.
All people interested may visit www.niagaracollege.ca/solvingniagara for further information or to go ahead and register. Please note that anyone under the age of 17 that wishes to participate, needs to be accompanied by an Adult.

Justin Bieber in Niagara Falls was Temporary, but the Bieber on Clifton Hill is Here to Stay

Reading Time:  3 minutes -Love them or hate them, two of the hottest stars in the news lately are in Niagara Falls — at least the wax version that is. Justin Bieber in Niagara Falls was a temporary appearance when he arrived at the Fallsview Casino with his entourage Saturday night. He was denied entry to the gaming floor after one of his friends failed to produce photo ID. After mulling around in the lobby for a few minutes he left as quickly as he came. See the full story produced by the Niagara Falls Review here.
Justin Bieber shot to fame in 2008 and since then, has been a hot topic in the news. Due to his popularity, Movieland Wax Museum on Clifton Hill unveiled a carefully crafted reconstruction of Justin Bieber from wax, almost 3 years ago on this date on March 25, 2011.

Fans that missed the opportunity to see Justin Bieber in Niagara Falls can at least get their photos taken with him and many other film, tv and music stars hot in the news currently such as Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and another recent hot topic, Jennifer Lawrence.

*Pictured Above: Katy Perry in her “California Gurls” set inside the Movieland Wax Museum
Jennifer Lawrence, best known for her roles in the “Hunger Games” and the “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” series of films, tripped and fell while making her way to the stage to accept the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Silver Linings Playbook” last year.
This year, the popular and seemingly down-to-earth celebrity tripped again on the red carpet of this years 86th Annual Academy Awards — I personally love her for it and so do thousands of others, catapulting her to even further stardom. Which leaves many people wondering whether she is doing it on purpose for attention. CBC news recently took notice of this as well, and covered a story on it: Oscars 2014: Did Jennifer Lawrence stage her red carpet fall?

In 2013, Movieland Wax Museum took notice of Jennifer Lawrence’s increasing fame after the successful 2012 “Hunger Games” movie release.

*Pictured Above: Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in the “Hunger Games” set in Movieland Wax Museum
Celebrities are frequently arriving in Niagara Falls, especially with the Fallsview Casino’s weekly concert venues, and the fact that we live in a city that holds one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the world. It’s not uncommon to see celebrities among tourists roaming around Clifton Hill, such as these shots from the Summer of 2012 of Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes:

*Pictured Above Left: Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes getting off the Niagara SkyWheel
Read about their previous visit by clicking here.
If you come to Niagara Falls and are one of the lucky ones to cross paths with one of the many stars that frequent here, than great. But if not, Movieland Wax Museum is staying on top of the hottest celebrities in the news to determine which celebrity (or character!) to recreate next!

*Pictured Above: Movieland Wax Museum’s newest addition, Ironman!

1 Dollar Day this Sunday at Clifton Hill Niagara Falls

Reading Time:  2 minutes -This Sunday, January 12th, 2014 is the 26th annual $1 Day on Clifton Hill for Niagara residents.
Niagara residents are encouraged to take part is this yearly event with participating attractions along Clifton Hill being only a loonie, with these funds going towards Cystic Fibrosis research.
About Cystic Fibrosis
$1 Day on Clifton Hill raised $26,000 last year and we are hoping to raise even more in 2014. Cystic Fibrosis Canada describes Cystic fibrosis (CF) as “the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults with no known cure. CF primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. In the lungs, where the effects of the disease are most devastating, a build-up of thick mucus causes increasingly severe respiratory problems. This mucus and protein also build up in the digestive tract making it difficult to digest and absorb nutrients from food. Large quantities of digestive enzymes must be consumed with every meal and snack.”

$1 Day on Clifton Hill will run from 10:00am to 5:00pm and Niagara residents will be required to carry a form of photo ID to take part in the event that contains their Niagara residential address. A Driver’s license, passport or student card are valid sources of photo ID.
Video
Here is a list of the participating attractions:
*Ghostblasters Dark Ride (located inside the Great Canadian Midway)
*Ripley’s Odditorium and Ripley’s Moving Theatre (both close at 4:00pm)
*Crystal Caves Mirror Maze
*Guinness World Records Museum
*Criminals Hall of Fame Wax Museum

5 Ways To Stay Fit Outdoors in Niagara Falls Over the Holidays

Reading Time:  5 minutes -Okay, so you are a resident in Niagara Falls or you plan on visiting here over the Holidays, and you know that you will overeat. If you are like me, you like to stay fit and active year round. I don’t have a gym membership, so I head outdoors for workouts. If you find it hard to stay motivated when the temperature plummets below zero, here are 5 fun ways to stay fit outdoors in Niagara Falls over the holidays:
TD Rink at the Brink:

Torch some calories at this open-air, outdoor ice skating rink located literally feet away from the gorgeous views offered by the Horseshoe Falls.  Open from December 1 to February 28, 2014 (excluding Christmas Day), the Winter Festival of Light’s TD Rink at the Brink is adjacent to the Table Rock Welcome Centre at 6650 Niagara Parkway. This is a fantastic way to stay fit with the entire family outdoors in Niagara Falls, while having fun doing it. You may bring your own skates, but there is also skate, helmet and locker rentals available. The price is inexpensive at only $8.00/Adult (including tax) and children aged 6 and younger are FREE when accompanied by a paying adult. Skate rentals at $5.00 + tax and $1.00 for a locker rentals. Helmet rentals are free.
For dates and hours click here.
Keep an eye on this events calendar for specific days that are completely free to skate, care of TD Rink at the Brink and in support of Project Share. Non-perishable food or cash donations are greatly appreciated during the holiday season. For more information contact: 905 353-1134 OR 374-1616 x. 240 (WFOL office).
Running!!!!

*Above: Myself after a snowy Winter race last year*– I love to run!! LOL
I love, love, LOVE to run outdoors! Nothing beats getting out there on a cold Winter’s day when the snow has just freshly fallen, for a little cardio warm up! Provided you dress warmly for the occasion (I wear 3 jackets, 2 pairs of gloves, my tried and true pair of Lululemon Winter running tights  and something to cover my ears, wool socks and (of course) a great pair of Winter running shoes, than why not?? I swear that once you get past the initial hurdle of getting motivated to get out in the cold, you will be glad that you did. A good Winter running shoe is vital for a safe run — you don’t want to be slipping and sliding on ice and through snow. I found a Runner’s World article that gives some solid choices in Winter running shoe selections. Click here to check out it out.
My favourite, most peaceful and scenic place to run outdoors in Niagara Falls is along the Niagara River Recreation Trail. It is 56 kilometres of generally flat surface. For a more challenging run, there’s nothing like running up and down Clifton Hill to add some hills to your workout. I usually finalize my run with this — and then reward myself with a cup of coffee at Tim Horton’s at the peak of the Hill when I’m done. 🙂
Sledding:
Who said it was just for kids? Sledding can burn up to 450 calories per hour, mostly done by trudging uphill, sled in tow. Here are some places in Niagara Falls to grab the family and take advantage of the snow — while getting a workout in as well!
1. Stamford Collegiate High School: 5775 Drummond Road, Niagara Falls.
2. Firemen’s Park: 2275 Dorchester Rd, Niagara Falls.
3. *For smaller kids* FH Leslie Park: 5250 Valley Way, Niagara Falls.
Walking/Hiking:

Above: *Photo taken during a peaceful walk through Queen Victoria Park*
Walking and hiking in the Winter can produce great health benefits without straining your hip, knee and ankle joints — and just like running, all you need is the proper Winter shoes and gear. While finding a place outdoors in Niagara Falls to go for a walk is plentiful — you can do it anywhere — it’s a little more difficult to find a location to go for a hike. The Niagara Region website has compiled an extensive list of not only Niagara Falls areas to hike, but the entire Niagara Region as well. While some options are best suited to Summer or Fall weather, many options are terrific for the Winter months as well. Check out the list by clicking here.
An added incentive to take an after dinner stroll in Niagara Falls? The Winter Festival of Lights! Why not get some exercise while checking out one of Canada’s best festival Christmas light shows? Take some photos, burn some calories and take in the beauty of this festival from November 9th, 2013 to January 31, 2014. Lights are dispersed throughout the Niagara Parkway, Queen Victoria Park and the beautiful Dufferin Islands.
Head to the Great Canadian Midway (Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls)

Meh, okay I cheated on this one — but it’s still an excellent way to stay fit during the Winter months anyhow. The Great Canadian Midway is 70,000 square feet of over 300+ games to choose from, many requiring you to be physically active (such as  “In the Groove”), and it’s a great way for the whole family to stay fit over the Christmas Holidays. The beautiful part is that the arcade stays open until 2:00am every day of the year! If playing video games doesn’t please you, head upstairs to Strike Rock N Bowl for a game of bowling! A 150 lb. person can burn up to 215 calories per hour bowling…roughly the same amount as a small sliver of chocolate cake you devoured over that Christmas dessert. 😉
So, there’s a small list of a few ways to stay fit outdoors in Niagara Falls this Holiday season. Feel free to share any other ways that you choose to stay active outdoors during the cold, Winter months. I’d love to hear them!

Niagara Falls Casino Contest!

Reading Time:  4 minutes -It’s that time of the year when Clifton Hill takes a little bit of a break from the chaos of Summertime. It’s just before Christmas and people begin to really watch their budget. The Comfort Inn Clifton Hill room rates are considerably cheaper in the Fall/Winter months than any other time of the year…and now they added a Niagara Falls Casino contest!
This is one of the best times to travel to Niagara Falls, or to simply get away for a staycation. Fewer people travel in December than the most popular months of June to August. This means less crowds, less lineups at popular Niagara Falls attractions, some great deals and there are still some great Niagara Falls events going on in the region — especially with Christmas on the way. As an added incentive, the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill is taking part in a Niagara Falls casino contest — book a room on either Friday, December 6th, 2013 or Saturday, December 7th, 2013 and you are automatically entered into a draw for $200 worth of casino game tokens to use at either Casino Niagara or Fallsview Casino.

* Click here to book a room! You must book by December 4th, 2013*
So what is going on during those days?
For starters, the Winter Festival of Lights is in full swing! This famous festival transforms the Niagara Parkway into a Winter Wonderland that attracts up to 1.5 million tourists annually both locally and internationally. This year, festival organizers have set up about 20 Korean lantern displays to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War and 50 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and South Korea. This year’s festival features 125 displays and three million tree and ground lights. The festival runs from November 4th, 2013 to January 31st, 2014.

Conveniently, the Fallsview Casino is running the Fallsview Casino Christmas on Ice show until the final day being Sunday, December 8, 2013! It’s a thrilling high paced spectacle of world-class ice skating and features national championship ice skaters, dancers and singers that will fill you with the magic of the season. Tickets start at $25 and there are various showings. If you are interested in booking on the two eligible dates for the Niagara Falls casino contest, here are the showings:
Friday, December 6th, 2013: 9:00 pm. Click here for ticket info.
Saturday, December 7th, 2013: 3:00pm & 9:00pm. Click here for ticket info.

Make sure to grab your camera and check out Niagara-on-the-Lake, just a short distance from the Clifton Hill Niagara Falls Hotel . On December 6th and 7th, 2013 from 10:00am – 4:00pm the 15th Annual Rotary Holiday House Tour commences. The most gorgeous historic properties are decked out for the season in holiday decorations by local businesses and volunteers. The tour operates regardless of the weather.
Purchased tickets ($25) can be picked up between 10 AM and 5 PM, 7 days a week, at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Chamber of Commerce, on the lower level at 26 Queen St., Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Of course the Clifton Hill Niagara Falls Hotel is not only walking distance from both the Casino Niagara, Fallsview Casino and the Winter Festival of Lights, but it’s also located right on Clifton Hill itself where all the attractions are open this time of the year — and Friday and Saturday nights until 12:00-1:00am for most attractions! The Niagara Skywheel has heated gondolas for your comfort, so no matter how much the temperature drops, the ride is open and offers spectacular one-of-a-kind views on the Niagara Falls and the surrounding landscape.
The best value for your buck is the Clifton Hill Fun Pass, where you get 5 Clifton Hill attractions for only $25.95+tax/Adults and $19.95+tax/Children — these include the Niagara Skywheel (TWO admissions if you purchase online), Dinosaur Adventure Golf (dependant on weather) OR Galaxy Golf, Movieland Wax Museum, the XD Ride Theatre and the Ghostblasters Dark Ride — plus a bonus of 5 tokens to use in the Great Canadian Midway!

There is so much to see within Niagara Falls, this is only a short summary of events that fall into the days of December 6th and 7th, 2013 — just a little added incentive to book on one or both of those two dates in order to be automatically entered into the Niagara Falls casino contest! To get started, click here. Good luck and enjoy your visit to Niagara Falls and your stay at the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill.

Heartland Forest is a Natural Oasis in Niagara Falls

Reading Time:  4 minutes -Heartland Forest is a unique natural attraction located on 93 acres of wetland in a remote area of Niagara Falls at 8215 Kalar Rd., just west of the QEW at the McLeod Rd. exit. Its founder, Dan Bowman, purchased the land in 1999 to save it from industrial development. With a vision in mind this kind-hearted soul has dedicated himself to develop a natural oasis within a rapidly growing city. Heartland Forest is now a land of forest trails, outdoor learning centres, home to a turtle, fish and frog pond, one of the largest tree houses in Canada with a 210 foot ramp, and streams and pools set within a Carolinian forest that officially opened to the public in 2004.
The Heartland Forest Nature Experience
Heartland Forest teaches everyone, young and old, about the diverse natural habitats of wildlife. Learn and grow through booking a community, school or day camp with them and gain access to the “Heartland Forest Nature Experience” in which professional outdoor educators lead any person or group on a fun-filled adventure into the forest and teaches them about the natural ecosystem. Click here for details on how to book your event and what is included.

All ages and abilities are made to feel welcome among its 2.5 kilometres of trails due to Heartland Forest’s dedication to keep everything wheelchair and handicap accessible. The use of the “Tootsie Express train” and free tours in a golf cart for the elderly solidify the importance of catering to everybody despite any special needs. Currently, 18,000 visitors annually flood this natural Niagara Falls community. Enjoy its butterfly garden, animal carvings, picnic areas, observation and rest stations, playground, barrier-free mini-putt and, of course, the tree house…all free of charge and dog-friendly. New to 2013 are themed birthday parties which are a hit with the Heartland Forest Nature Experience! It includes a party facilitator and use of their fantastic amenities. Choose from: Butterfly Adventure, Jungle Safari Party, Pirate Party, Fairy Princess, Amphibian Adventure and Geocaching. Parties are available year-round and it’s your choice to hold it in either a rustic classroom, the treehouse or the brand new Nature Centre! You can contact Rita Maier,  Fundraising, Events and Facility Coordinator for information or to book your party at: rmaier@cogeco.ca.

When Heartland Forest first opened there was a dream for a permanent facility that came true on June 21, 2013. That day saw to it the Grand Opening of the 14,000 square foot multi-purpose, fully accessible Nature Centre! This enhances their current areas of service and provides opportunities for employment within the Niagara region. It has seating for up tp 150 people and the wings of the centre house classrooms, an arts studio and space for seminars, workshops and indoor recreational activities.

Clifton Hill is proud to be a sponsor of Heartland Forest as we as well love the importance of teaching children and adults through our attractions and packages. School trips may be over for the season, but we offer fantastic packages for students well worth looking into beginning in the Fall. In the meantime, many group packages apply for your corporate, birthday party and any other function that include many attractions such as wheelchair accessible rides like the Niagara Skywheel. Galaxy Golf and Movieland Wax Museum are also wheelchair accessible and all our attractions offer group rates. Inquire by clicking here or by calling our Group Sales Coordinator at 1-800-801-8557. Adults and children rave about our Clifton Hill Fun Pass which is drastically discounted to 50% its retail value and includes the attractions mentioned plus the XD Ride Theatre, Ghostblasters Dark Ride, some tokens for the Great Canadian Midway and the choice to do Dinosaur Adventure Golf instead of Galaxy Golf if you are more in the mood for an outdoorsy Jurassic Park-type adventure instead! Boston Pizza Clifton Hill also includes packages that include a meal, all these attractions and the use of Strike Rock N Bowl located within the same facility as the restaurant! Or custom choose your own package for your wants and desires! Click here for details and how to book. Check out all these attractions in our brand-new video:

Niagara Falls is an ideal destination to teach through nature as Heartland Forest does, and through fun and attractions just steps away from the Falls on Clifton Hill. Diversity and fun for all ages is vast throughout this city.
