A Childhood Memory: When Clifton Hill Sparked My Halloween Imagination

Some of my earliest memories of Clifton Hill go back to the early and mid-1980s, when I was a young boy attending mass at St. John of Rila Orthodox Church, just off Victoria Avenue, with my family.

After church, my family and I would often explore Maple Leaf Village and Clifton Hill. Back then, the tourist district felt like a wonderfully strange place, filled with unusual museums, mysterious exhibits, and attractions that seemed larger than life.

I remember Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, with its bizarre displays, including things like a two-headed lamb. There was the Houdini Museum, too, along with the occasional frightening wax figure that could stop you in your tracks.

Even the attraction brochures were exciting. My sisters and I collected those colourful, wildly illustrated pamphlets advertising the area’s strange and spooky attractions.

One that particularly stands out was the House of Frankenstein brochure. It doubled as a monster mask that you could cut out and wear. For a kid in the early 1980s, that was pretty exciting. You could take a little piece of Clifton Hill’s creepy world home and become one of the monsters yourself.

But another memory has stayed with me.

Somewhere near the bottom of Clifton Hill, I remember a costume shop with what seemed like an enormous wall covered in hundreds of elaborate Halloween masks. Monsters, strange faces, and frightening creatures filled the display.

At least, that’s how I remember it.

To this day, I haven’t been able to verify whether that wall of masks really existed quite as I recall it, or whether my childhood imagination made it larger and more extraordinary over time. Perhaps it was a little of both.

What I do remember is the feeling. Those strange museums, theatrical displays, colourful brochures, and frightening faces made an enormous impression.
