Getting to Niagara Falls by train continues to be one of the most convenient ways to reach the region from the Greater Toronto Area. Service on the Lakeshore West line, operated by GO Transit, offers regular weekend travel with multiple daily return trips between Toronto and Niagara Falls on Saturdays, Sundays, and select holiday Mondays, giving visitors flexibility to plan day trips or weekend getaways.

Following a temporary disruption caused by a CN freight train derailment near St. Catharines on March 30, 2026, full rail service to the Niagara region has now resumed. Trains between Toronto, St. Catharines, and Niagara Falls restarted on April 10, 2026, with commuters advised to expect minor delays of approximately 5–10 minutes as service stabilizes.

The derailment involved 14 rail cars, including four tank cars carrying dangerous goods. According to investigators, there were no injuries and no reported leaks. The incident prompted a temporary suspension of service while repairs and safety inspections were completed.

Navigation through the Welland Canal was also impacted during the same period, including the Lock 4 railway bridge and West Flight Locks. These have since reopened following repairs, restoring normal commercial vessel movement through the canal system.

Convenient Weekend Travel

The Niagara Falls route resumes eight daily trips on weekends—four from Toronto to Niagara Falls and four returning. This schedule continues to make it easier for visitors to avoid highway congestion while accessing one of Ontario’s most popular destinations.

Whether planning a quick visit to the Falls, exploring Clifton Hill, or spending the day enjoying local attractions, rail travel remains a stress-free alternative to driving.

Travelers can easily combine rail service with local transit and attraction access:

Make your visit even simpler with the GO+WEGO Combo Ticket, which combines round-trip GO Transit travel to Niagara Falls with access to the Niagara Parks WEGO bus network. From the Niagara Falls train station, WEGO provides convenient service to Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls, and other top attractions, with the ability to hop on and off during your trip.

Travelers can avoid traffic and parking hassles by taking the GO Train, located at 4267 Bridge Street in Niagara Falls, a short distance from the downtown district and roughly four kilometers from the Falls. The nearby GO Bus stop at 4555 Erie Avenue provides additional access, along with a stop at Stanley Avenue & Highway 420. From any of these points, Clifton Hill is within easy reach.

Connections from Confederation GO Station

All Lakeshore West trains serving Niagara Falls also stop at Confederation GO Station in Hamilton’s east end, strengthening regional connectivity between Toronto, Hamilton, and Niagara.

The station is part of broader network improvements designed by Metrolinx to enhance passenger flow and accessibility across the corridor. Key features include:

The facility was designed to enhance passenger comfort with:

  • A fully accessible heated island platform with weather-protective canopies
  • A pedestrian tunnel providing safe and convenient platform access
  • A pick-up and drop-off zone accommodating up to 15 vehicles
  • 148 new parking spaces for commuters
  • Direct pedestrian stair access to Centennial Parkway

Confederation GO will operate 13 weekday and 15 weekend train trips, maintaining strong connections through GO Bus Routes 11 and 12.

A More Connected Region

The improvements across the Lakeshore West line are part of a broader effort by Metrolinx to enhance regional travel options across southern Ontario, including added trips and new station infrastructure designed to support long-term growth.

  • Lakeshore West Line: More Niagara Falls service, the addition of Confederation GO, and extended trips serving Appleby GO in Burlington.
  • Lakeshore East Line: Six new rush-hour trips between Oshawa or Whitby and Union Station.
  • Barrie Line: Two new peak trips between Aurora GO and Union Station.
  • Stouffville Line: Two new peak trips between Unionville GO and Union Station.
