Reading Time:  2 minutes -

One Love Order At The Border Preview
by Matt Bauer
“The Grove” (located behind the Floral Showcase in Niagara Falls, ON) will be jamming to the sizzling sounds of scintillating reggae grooves, dance-floor rocking party funk and some of the finest acts in classic soul and R&B as it hosts The One Love Order @ The Border festival from June 4-6.
Showcasing over 35 international artists as well as several up and coming local acts, the highly anticipated festival is the first of its kind in the Niagara Region and its genre-crossing, stellar line-up should appeal to any age group.

Freddie McGregor headlines Friday’s line-up of classic reggae. A veteran musical institution for five decades, McGregor’s many hits include “Push Comes To Shove,” “Big Ship,” and “Africa, Here I Come” each a classic of “Lovers Rock” and conscious reggae. Also scheduled for Friday are Johnny Osbourne, Errol Dunkley, and Lone Ranger; all three venerable performers in reggae and dancehall, respectively. Peter Ranking, Carlton Livingston, Prezident Brown and Jah Bouks round out the day’s island vibes.

If you’re looking to get your groove on to the sounds of vintage funk, look no further than the Bay Area-bred party machine known as ConFunkShun who’ll be bringing quintessential dance jams like “Ffun,” and “Shake and Dance with Me” to their Saturday performance. Cleveland’s Dazz Band (best known for their massive hit “Let It Whip”) should be expected to rock the house with their blend of high-energy electro-funk and romantic soul. Fans of homegrown talent as well as the ladies in the crowd will want to check out the smooth R&B pop of Show Stephens while Grammy nominated smooth soul man Carl Thomas is the final scheduled act for Saturday.

With 12 Top Twenty Singles and seven gold albums over the course of over four decades, The Whispers are a must see for any classic soul fan and their impressive resume of hits which runs the gamut from sultry balladry to infectious dance tracks is scheduled to close Sunday’s line-up. One of the true queens of modern R&B: Faith Evans will also be taking the stage along with nouveau bluesman Corey Harris and Ontario reggae crooner Uncle Jonny. Fans of unheralded classic soul won’t want to miss Lenny Williams who fronted Niagara favorites Tower of Power from 1973-1974.

If you’re looking for some of Niagara Falls’ finest restaurants and most exciting attractions while on your way to, or from, the festival ,check out Clifton Hill which is less than 10 minutes walking distance from the festival site. Be sure to check out www.cliftonhill.com for all of the information you need to know about the World Famous Street of Fun by the Falls.
Tickets for this not to be missed event can be purchased by phone at 1-866-943-8849 or online at http://www.ticketbreak.com/onelove

1 Dollar Day this Sunday at Clifton Hill Niagara Falls

Reading Time:  2 minutes -

This Sunday, January 12th, 2014 is the 26th annual $1 Day on Clifton Hill for Niagara residents.
Niagara residents are encouraged to take part is this yearly event with participating attractions along Clifton Hill being only a loonie, with these funds going towards Cystic Fibrosis research.
About Cystic Fibrosis
$1 Day on Clifton Hill raised $26,000 last year and we are hoping to raise even more in 2014. Cystic Fibrosis Canada describes Cystic fibrosis (CF) as “the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults with no known cure. CF primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. In the lungs, where the effects of the disease are most devastating, a build-up of thick mucus causes increasingly severe respiratory problems. This mucus and protein also build up in the digestive tract making it difficult to digest and absorb nutrients from food. Large quantities of digestive enzymes must be consumed with every meal and snack.”

$1 Day on Clifton Hill will run from 10:00am to 5:00pm and Niagara residents will be required to carry a form of photo ID to take part in the event that contains their Niagara residential address. A Driver’s license, passport or student card are valid sources of photo ID.

Fall Events in Niagara Falls: Clifton Hill Restaurants & Nightlife

Reading Time:  4 minutes -

The month may almost be over, but there’s still plenty going on for Fall events in Niagara Falls — especially on Clifton Hill.
Join us at Rumours Night Club this Thursday, October 31st for our annual Halloween bash! This year’s theme? “Exotic, Erotic”! Men, you dress up in your best exotic costume and ladies, your theme is erotic! Best costume wins $500 cold, hard cash! Best of all? It’s free cover! DJ Oz E spins the tunes all night long! Every year the party gets bigger and better than ever — and this Halloween will be no different. Definitely be sure to check this one off as one of your must-see Fall events in Niagara Falls! Here are just a few pictures from last year’s event — and remember, every weekend there is a photographer on hand to take your picture. Be sure to find her and tag your photo off the Rumours Facebook Page!

If you can’t make Rumours on Thursday, no worries because it’s redemption time at Boston Pizza Clifton Hill on Friday, November 1st! Halloween continues with Boston Pizza’s “Day After Halloween” celebration! $4 Jager shots, $5 Pumpkin Ale and lots of prizes to be won…so don’t retire the costume just yet! This Boston Pizza is also one of the largest sports bars in Niagara Falls, so catch your favourite game on one of the many big screen tv’s. Unsure what game is on? No problem. We have the daily sports action listings on our website! Click here to check out what game is playing on a week-to-week basis under our “Calender of Events”. And just like Rumours, Boston Pizza Clifton Hill has our weekend nightly photographer on hand to snap your picture and upload it in an album on the Boston Pizza Clifton Hill Facebook Page. Tag, tag, tag away — and you never know if she has a prize to throw your way! ;).

New this month is “Win-Win Tuesday’s”! Every Tuesday night during the Leafs game, Boston Pizza Clifton Hill is where you need to be! If they win, than great — we all feel good! If they lose, you still win with a free pizza on us!

If you are looking for a place a little more low-key, than check out Kelsey’s Clifton Hill and their new menu items just in time for Fall. Situated right on the corner of Clifton Hill and Victoria Av., it’s totally encompassed by windows for people watching and viewing all the excitement and entertainment on the hill.

Kelsey’s has just introduced their “Meet the Meats” menu. Catered specifically for the meat lover, this menu doesn’t disappoint! The “BIG WHAT” Stuffed Burger is a popular favourite which includes double stacked sirloin patties, bacon, goat cheese, caramelized onions, apple butter BBQ sauce and crispy onion strings, served with crispy fries for $14.99.
My personal favourite addition to this menu which gets 2 big thumbs up is the “Messy Beef Sandwich”. OMG!!! So delicious, give it a try! AAA beef piled high with caramelized onions, Cajun dusted onion strings, jalapeno monterey jack cheese and house-made horseradish beer mustard on a toasted pretzel bun and served with crispy fries for $13.99.
*Messy Beef Sandwich….so ******* good! lol*
There are so many options on this menu for both lunch and dinner, so just click here for the full menu.
Perhaps best of all is Kelsey’s new “kicked up” bar promotion. Come to our Clifton Hill location and we will top up your draught beer for only .99 cents (5 oz. for domestics, 3 oz. for all others) and top up your martinis for only $2.50 (10 oz.)! So basically (at least the way I look at it), if there is 12 ounces of beer in a single standard bottle of beer, 2 “kicked up” draught beers would just cost you $2 for almost a full bottle of domestic beer. I can’t remember the last time I had a bottle of beer for $2!! Any way you look at it, that’s one heck of a deal!
So, with the Fall season upon us, there is still plenty of Fall events in Niagara Falls on Clifton Hill to take part in at our restaurants and Rumours Night Club — and more to come! Stay connected to me for more restaurant specials and events! 🙂

What the &*#$ is a Gran Fondo?

Reading Time:  4 minutes -

So, as many locals have been made to be aware, Gran Fondo will be in Niagara Falls tomorrow. When I initially heard of this event, I had no idea what that meant. I asked by boss this morning if he knew what Gran Fondo was before Gran Fondo Niagara Falls was brought to our attention and he said he thought it was an Italian bread made for dipping. So there was my answer…I’m sure a lot of you knew what it was, especially if you are a cyclist, but I’m sure that there are plenty floating in the same raft as the two of us…so what the &*#$ is a Gran Fondo anyways?
Wikipedia says “A cyclosportive, or often simply sportive, is a short to long distance, organised, mass-participation cycling event, typically held annually. The Italian term Gran Fondo is commonly used for these events in the United States, Australia and some other English-speaking countries”. Many cyclists use a Gran Fondo as a race against the clock, with prizes awarded for top place finishers. This type of an event falls between a traditional cycle road race and the more challenging non-competitive Audax events. An Audax is a cycling sport in which participants attempt to cycle long distances within a pre-defined time limit. Success in the Audax event is simply determined by completion. The Gran Fondo participants however, carry a number and an electronic chip that will record the finishing time. This is a lengthy course (typically anywhere between 66km-268km), complete with climbs and difficult riding conditions. The Gran Fondo Niagara Falls in particular is 125 km long, with an elevation of up to 1100 metres!
Here is a map of the Gran Fondo Niagara Falls route:

All Gran Fondo events have a starting corral. This I am familiar with through running races, and it’s the exact same policy. Based on your average speed, you fall into a particular category. The fastest racers will be at the front of the pack, with the slower cyclists at the rear. Cyclists are expected to maintain a speed of 20km/hour to stay in the event. When you see the “Fine Gara”, that vehicle indicates the tail end of the race and all cyclists that fall behind this will be offered the “Rider Bus”– which is the next vehicle behind the Fine Gara and will be offered a transfer to the finish line. If riders choose not to take the Rider Bus, they will then have to follow the rules of the road as they will be open to the public again at that point. They also risk not having their time recorded when they finish. 2:30 pm is the cut-off limit for the Gran Fondo Niagara Falls riders.
The Gran Fondo Niagara Falls event will start and finish at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls. Everyone is welcome to be a spectator and cheer the riders on! The start corrals open at 5:30am. All riders are expected to be in position in the start corrals before 6:30am. At 6:45 am the race will start immediately after the national anthem. It is very important to establish an appropriate position in the corral so that the slower riders won’t deter the faster riders and the faster riders won’t be stuck behind the slower cyclists. It will lead to a smooth transition. The electronic chip timer will begin as soon as a participant crosses the start line, so no matter how far back a racer is, it will not effect finishing times. This is not a gun-timed event.

If you are a local and you are unsure whether road closures will effect you please click here for a detailed listing of updated road closures via the Niagara Falls Review. In honor of the Gran Fondo, the always popular Niagara Wine Festival will kick off a weekend earlier than usual, meaning riders and spectators are encouraged to celebrate the completion of the course (with the beginning start corral finishers expected at approximately 1:00pm) with wine and food pairings at any of the participating wineries in the region! For information on the Niagara Wine Festival click here.
1:00pm will also begin a FREE live concert at Queen Victoria Park by Juno award-winning Jim Cuddy and the legendary Barney Bentall, to perform at the finish celebration of the inaugural GranFondo Niagara Falls. Come on out!

Many hotels in Niagara Falls are completely booked up for this event — tired cyclists and wine enthusiasts will not want to travel. The Clifton Hill Niagara Falls Hotel is in a prime location to the start and finish line — just a 5 minute walk from the hotel! There are still a few rooms left for the event, so if you want to be close to all the action, book fast! Check out the online reservation system right here.

Heartland Forest is a Natural Oasis in Niagara Falls

Reading Time:  4 minutes -

Heartland Forest is a unique natural attraction located on 93 acres of wetland in a remote area of Niagara Falls at 8215 Kalar Rd., just west of the QEW at the McLeod Rd. exit. Its founder, Dan Bowman, purchased the land in 1999 to save it from industrial development. With a vision in mind this kind-hearted soul has dedicated himself to develop a natural oasis within a rapidly growing city. Heartland Forest is now a land of forest trails, outdoor learning centres, home to a turtle, fish and frog pond, one of the largest tree houses in Canada with a 210 foot ramp, and streams and pools set within a Carolinian forest that officially opened to the public in 2004.
The Heartland Forest Nature Experience
Heartland Forest teaches everyone, young and old, about the diverse natural habitats of wildlife. Learn and grow through booking a community, school or day camp with them and gain access to the “Heartland Forest Nature Experience” in which professional outdoor educators lead any person or group on a fun-filled adventure into the forest and teaches them about the natural ecosystem. Click here for details on how to book your event and what is included.

All ages and abilities are made to feel welcome among its 2.5 kilometres of trails due to Heartland Forest’s dedication to keep everything wheelchair and handicap accessible. The use of the “Tootsie Express train” and free tours in a golf cart for the elderly solidify the importance of catering to everybody despite any special needs. Currently, 18,000 visitors annually flood this natural Niagara Falls community. Enjoy its butterfly garden, animal carvings, picnic areas, observation and rest stations, playground, barrier-free mini-putt and, of course, the tree house…all free of charge and dog-friendly. New to 2013 are themed birthday parties which are a hit with the Heartland Forest Nature Experience! It includes a party facilitator and use of their fantastic amenities. Choose from: Butterfly Adventure, Jungle Safari Party, Pirate Party, Fairy Princess, Amphibian Adventure and Geocaching. Parties are available year-round and it’s your choice to hold it in either a rustic classroom, the treehouse or the brand new Nature Centre! You can contact Rita Maier,  Fundraising, Events and Facility Coordinator for information or to book your party at: rmaier@cogeco.ca.

When Heartland Forest first opened there was a dream for a permanent facility that came true on June 21, 2013. That day saw to it the Grand Opening of the 14,000 square foot multi-purpose, fully accessible Nature Centre! This enhances their current areas of service and provides opportunities for employment within the Niagara region. It has seating for up tp 150 people and the wings of the centre house classrooms, an arts studio and space for seminars, workshops and indoor recreational activities.

Clifton Hill is proud to be a sponsor of Heartland Forest as we as well love the importance of teaching children and adults through our attractions and packages. School trips may be over for the season, but we offer fantastic packages for students well worth looking into beginning in the Fall. In the meantime, many group packages apply for your corporate, birthday party and any other function that include many attractions such as wheelchair accessible rides like the Niagara Skywheel. Galaxy Golf and Movieland Wax Museum are also wheelchair accessible and all our attractions offer group rates. Inquire by clicking here or by calling our Group Sales Coordinator at 1-800-801-8557. Adults and children rave about our Clifton Hill Fun Pass which is drastically discounted to 50% its retail value and includes the attractions mentioned plus the XD Ride Theatre, Ghostblasters Dark Ride, some tokens for the Great Canadian Midway and the choice to do Dinosaur Adventure Golf instead of Galaxy Golf if you are more in the mood for an outdoorsy Jurassic Park-type adventure instead! Boston Pizza Clifton Hill also includes packages that include a meal, all these attractions and the use of Strike Rock N Bowl located within the same facility as the restaurant! Or custom choose your own package for your wants and desires! Click here for details and how to book. Check out all these attractions in our brand-new video:

Niagara Falls is an ideal destination to teach through nature as Heartland Forest does, and through fun and attractions just steps away from the Falls on Clifton Hill. Diversity and fun for all ages is vast throughout this city.

Niagara Falls Running: 14 weeks to go until the big day!

Reading Time:  5 minutes -

Well, it’s been 1.5 weeks since I decided to take my Niagara Falls running to the next level and register for the Niagara Falls International Marathon. My previous and first post on this subject gave a little history on how I began running two years ago, so I won’t go into any depth about that except to say that the reasons that have kept me engaged with running have gone further beyond wanting to lose the baby weight — it is now part of my almost daily routine. Ask anyone that knows me about the two things in life that I can’t live without, and they will tell you a) my son, Kaidyn and b) running. I am addicted to the endorphin rush and the sense of utter relaxment, calmness and euphoria when I finish on empty. This is why I truly believe in the term “runner’s high” — because it happens to me on every single run. Niagara Falls running is a key motivator that keeps me from getting bored because I happen to live in a region with one of the most beautiful backdrops to run by — the Niagara Falls. Running on the trails in Niagara-on-the-Lake, little towns within the Niagara region (such as Jordan), and finding my “happy spots” as I call them in my hometown of St.Catharines keeps me focused, engaged, and challenged every time I step out the door.
I would be lying if I told you that during this past week and a half that I made the decision to jump to a full marathon, that I decided to stick to a specific marathon training plan. I did not. I am stubborn in that I like to train my own way and I kind of took on the notion that I am my own personal trainer. I refer to the book “Running: The Complete Guide to Building Your Running Program” by John Stanton as a general resource for my training. If you read my first post, you will know that I have done several half marathon races, and this book that you can purchase at the Running Room is an excellent tool for the beginner runner and for the seasoned athlete. My favourite chapter in the book breaks down a training guide for whichever type of race you are planning on doing (in this case, a full marathon) and even caters to whatever time you aim to finish in! I love this because my average half marathon finishing time is at the 1:45 mark, so you can up the ante and follow a 1:40 guide.

In any case, with this book I personally use it to keep me on track, but I don’t follow it every day as a specific set schedule. Some people choose to, and that’s great, but I like to colour outside the lines a bit and do my own thing. This past week, Niagara Falls running has been a challenge with the heat. A few days in a row we saw temperatures at the 32-33c mark, with the humidity making it feel more like 40C, and in some cases even higher than that! This didn’t mean that I fell off my training plan though! I made sure to hydrate properly and I ran with water. I don’t like to wear anything around my waist when I run, so I don’t use hydration belts. I keep my water bottle in my hands the whole time. The first day of our heatwave last week I found that even though I kept myself hydrated, my muscles were sore and achy throughout my whole body. I violated one of my own running tips…in extreme heat carry ELECTROLYTES! An “electrolyte” is any salt mineral that carries signals between cells allowing them to react properly. It regulates blood pressure, heart rate, water levels and muscle movement. If we don’t have enough electolytes, our body doesn’t perform as well. In extreme heat this tends to suffer and products that carry electrolytes (especially on longer runs) will benefit your performance. Gatorade for instance, is a an excellent source of a drink containing electrolytes. Races will usually have water and Gatorade stations set up every few kilometres. I really like Nuun tablets. They are flavoured tablets that disolve in water and they are easy on my stomach. Other popular brands of electrolytes are Gels such as Gu, in which you swallow back a pouch before or during your run and it gives you the extra “lift” that you need to keep going. Practice your tolerance for an electrolyte source well before your big day to see which product works for you — you don’t want any unnecessary “surprises” the day of. There’s is nothing worse than having to make a pit stop at a port-a-potty when you are trying to beat the clock! That’s all I will say about that.

If you live locally to Niagara Falls and you plan on registering for the Niagara Falls International Marathon , I would like to share with you one of my favourite Niagara Falls running routes. With all the chaos of raising a two-year old and everyday daily stresses I find it relaxing to get out for a trail run and I love the nature. This route is in St.Catharines and it’s the Merritt Trail. This trail begins at Bradley Street in south St.Catharines and continues through to Martindale Road in west St.Catharines and connects with the Green Ribbon Trail. The length of the trail is 11 kilometres. In the past week alone I have seen a massive tortoise, three beavers and just last night when I turned the corner I came face-to-face with a gorgeous deer! I have attached the pictures below as I always carry my iphone with me on my runs to track my GPS route through the free Nike+ GPS app. Please excuse the quality of my pictures. I took the picture of the deer so quickly!

In general, my training this last week and a half has been more about a test of will and strength in this heat than focusing on mileage. I have stayed consistent with running a 10K distance on average while keeping 2 days a week open for crosstraining, in which I choose to lift light weights and stregthen my core through abdominal exercises, planks and squats. My advice to you is to not avoid exercising in extreme heat, but to embrace it, while of course taking the necessary precautions. It is training in weather like this that may give you an extra edge over the opponent if you are competitive, but will also make you a stronger runner because the only person that you need to compete with is the person that you were yesterday when it comes to improvement. That’s the whole point in marathon training, right?
If you have enjoyed this blog or feel that it may help to encourage someone to give running a go, share this blog!
Thanks for reading and I look forward to sharing my Niagara Falls running experiences with you!

Niagara Falls International Marathon: My Journey to take on 42.2 Kilometres

Reading Time:  5 minutes -

If you had asked me 2 years ago if I would become an avid running addict, I would have told you that you were crazy! I just gave birth to my son and had zero motivation. I had post-pardum depression, I had 35 pounds to shed and a newborn baby that drained all of my time and energy. Now I’m just 15.5 weeks out of running 42.2 Kilometres (or 26 miles to my American friends) in the Niagara Falls International Marathon on October 27th, 2013.
I had my son, Kaidyn, on March 27th, 2011 and it was on August 1st, 2011 exactly that I decided enough was enough and it was time to get moving. I went out and bought a good pair of running shoes — Asics Gel Nimbus 13. To this day, I swear by those shoes. I began walking with Kaidyn in his stroller after 2 months, so by August 1st when I decided to step out the door, I felt I was ready to do the next step — run. I didn’t realize then that I would be documenting my experience leading up to the Niagara Falls International Marathon just a couple of years later, nor did I know that I would shed all the weight plus an additional 16 pounds, improve my health and fitness and find a natural remedy to overcome post-pardum depression, without any kind of medical intervention. I downloaded the Nike GPS app for iphone — it’s a completely free application in which you enter your stats (height, weight, sex) and from there is tracks calories burned, mileage, your route and your speed. You have the ability to share it on social networking, which I do on Facebook. If you are competitive by nature — like myself haha — you can also race against your friends and try to beat their mileage week by week which is a further push to try and nail the Niagara Falls International Marathon.

Here is a video of the exact shoe that works for my foot specifically that I swear by, right down to the colour — but please have a professional assess your feet and running stride for the best shoe for your specific foot type! Places like your local Running Room will do this for you.

The first thing I did to avoid the temptation to give up and stop running completely, was sign up for the Road 2 Hope Half Marathon on November 6th, 2011. That gave me 3 months to prepare. I slowly increased my mileage from 5KM runs to 10KM runs. I went from running everyday to running 5-6 days a week with one day devoted to Jillian Michaels. For super cheap, I bought 2 DVD’s: Jillian Michaels: No More Trouble Zones and Jillian Michaels: Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism. I bought free weights in 1 lb, 3 lbs, and 5 lbs and got to work. Each DVD is 45 minutes. I learned that strength training is vital to maintaining proper form and increasing speed, stamina and the core strength needed for running. At the time, in preperation for this race, it was more important to me to finish the race than to garner a great time. I finished in 2:08:25. I was beaming! I felt accomplished, I felt like I could conquer the world. It was at that exact moment (without sounding poetic) that I fell in love with running. So here’s my first tip to keep you motivated….sign up NOW for the Niagara Falls International Marathon! By doing this, you will keep yourself accountable to keep moving. When you constantly sign up for races, you are continously staying on top of your game. You can only get better.
Here is my photo after my first race — the Road 2 Hope Half Marathon in November, 2011:

Fast forward to now — I have done 16 5K, 15 10K races, 6 Half Marathons, 1 30K race and the Warrior Dash. I have 34 medals — 25 of which I placed in the top 3 in my age group. My most recent Half Marathon was in a time of 1:43:17 — shaving off a considerable amount of time from my very first Half Marathon due to determination and persistance. I also have it in the back of my head that I am doing this for my son as well…to be the best mom that I can be by staying healthy enough to keep up!
My goal with this series of blogs leading up to the Niagara Falls International Marathon is to not only further motivate myself, but to encourage other runners and new runners that signing up for a full marathon doesn’t have to be as daunting as it seems. I am not a professional runner, I have NOT been doing this for years, I have lack of time, I have lack of sleep and I sometimes eat things that I shouldn’t, I get injuries, I run too late at night, I suffer from embarrassing running issues that no one ever wants to admit or talk about and I have no idea why Kenyans are so fast and why barefoot running is beneficial. I am just a regular runner looking to achieve something that statistics say that only 4% of the population ever acquires — to run a marathon!
Please follow my journey with me over these next couple of months as I document my personal experience and hopefully motivate you to give running a try! I will also write about my experience at the Niagara Falls International Marathon afterwards. The good, the bad, and the ugly! I will share my mileage, my nutrition (keeps me accountable!), trails and routes that I like and anything else I choose to talk about. I will leave this blog with my favourite running quote, made into a tattoo on my wrist:

If you have enjoyed this blog or feel that it may help encourage someone to give running a go, share this blog!
Thanks for reading and I look forward to sharing my experiences with you!
