Tips to Plan a Weekend Getaway to Remember in Niagara Falls

Reading Time:  4 minutes -

If cost and/or finding the time to travel is difficult for you, then perhaps all you need is to plan a weekend getaway in Niagara Falls. Get the most out of your mini-vacation by making it the most enjoyable couple of days spent here.

Pick A Hotel That Speak To Your Interests

Does your family enjoy waterparks? Choose the Sheraton on the Falls for quick access and room packages that feature the Fallsview Indoor Waterpark. A little further away from the tourist hustle and bustle you may pick the Americana Waterpark Resort & Spa on Lundy’s Lane for a quieter stay.

Are you looking to be close to all the family fun attractions while situated only a short walk to view the Falls? Choose hotels such as the Howard Johnson Hotel by the Falls or the Niagara Falls Courtyard by Marriott which also feature packages that cater to family fun.

What about if you are on the opposite side of the spectrum and you are travelling as a couple and prefer a more “outdoorsy” getaway? We have that too! Popular campsites such as Campark Resorts or Jellystone Niagara are available to suit the nature lovers.

Whether you wish to be closer to picnicking at the Niagara Gorge or right in the swing of the things on the “Street of Fun”, you’ll want to choose a Niagara Falls hotel that speaks to your interests with as little driving back and forth as possible.

Bring A Travel Companion — or Two!

Niagara Falls is full of relaxation for the solo traveler, but there’s definitely more fun to be had with a buddy or two! Attractions such as the Niagara SkyWheel, The Hornblower Niagara Crusies, MistRider Zipline to the Falls, and the Whirpool Jet Boat Tours are simply all that more exciting when you have brought a friend to share the laughter and memories with!

The Ultimate Fun with friends in Niagara Falls is with the Clifton Hill Fun Pass. Only $29.95+HST each for SIX attractions!

Leave Your Phone on Airplane Mode the Majority of the Time

It’s tempting now that our phones keep us in touch with the world via social media, news at the tip of our fingers, the urge to share every photo from your trip highlights to the food you eat, to want to bring along your phone everywhere you go. It almost seems like a complete necessity, but the truth of the matter is, just 15 years ago we managed just fine.

We are so attached to our phones now that we take photos to remember the moments — but while not fully being in the moment and enjoying each others company in the present. Obviously, this isn’t always the case, but if you tend to be distracted by your phone, it really is great to disconnect and only use the phone for pictures — save sharing them for the time being.

Take a break from business calls and emails. Tell yourself that you will turn on your phone only briefly in the morning or the evening. Spend quality time with your companion(s), and enjoy the beauty that Niagara Falls holds from hiking to simply standing by the natural wonder for the moment and breathe.

Afterwards, you can use social media to your advantage and start sharing the photos you took by tagging the respective businesses that you frequented. Many places will give you added exposure by asking to share your photos and will link to your accounts. For example, if you are a Travel Blogger or an up and coming Photographer, this is one of the best ways to utilize your skills. Research ahead where you plan on visiting and follow their social media accounts for the potential chance to win something amazing just for reaching out and connecting with them.

Leave Copies of Everything with a Loved One

Nothing can ruin a trip more than facing the possibility of a lost passport, wallet, purse, or your credit cards. Take pictures of all your ID documents, and make sure you have your credit card numbers saved somewhere secure.
Take advantage of hotels that have a safe, and try to avoid bringing all your items with you on your excursions. They can easily get dropped or misplaced while doing many of Niagara’s exciting attractions. You could set down your purse in a taxi or a bus and leave it in there if you are distracted by carrying souvenirs or bags from shopping at our malls and boutiques. This leads me back up to the first point of finding a hotel that speaks to your interests. If you are already situated within the vicinity of attractions that you wish to frequent, than locking up your passports and important documents in your hotel and easily walking to and from where you wish to go makes sense. Stress-free vacationing!

The History of Clifton Hill

Reading Time:  6 minutes -

Clifton Hill is known as the “Street of Fun by the Falls”; a street jammed with tourists in the Summer and marked by attractions, restaurants, hotels and motels. Before all this, Clifton Hill held an important historic significance to Niagara Falls.

Clifton Hill’s location essentially started out because of a man named Samuel Zimmerman. Samuel Zimmerman was an American who came to Niagara in 1842 and was a very gifted contractor, and quite possibly one of the best of his time. He made a fortune on projects such as the Second Welland Canal, and was the man behind the building of the Great Western Railroad from Hamilton to Niagara Falls. He was also a primary supporter of the first railway suspension bridge to be built across the Niagara River Gorge.

The “Village of Clifton” was initially a piece of property owned by a man named Captain Ogden Creighton, and the village started laying out buildings and streets in approximately 1832. It was Creighton who gave this future settlement the name “Clifton”, derived from the town of the same name in England. Upon his death in 1837, his wife sold the property to Samuel Zimmerman. He later had the Erie and Niagara Railway routed through this town.

In 1848, Zimmerman purchased land in the “Village of Elgin” (which he named after Lord Elgin, the Governor General of Canada) after the first suspension bridge was built and houses started to span out with its first settlers in the area. This was the area of Niagara Falls that contained Queen Street, Park Street, Huron Street and Morrison Street. In 1856, the boundaries of the Village of Elgin were expanded to include the area of the Table Rock.

In view of this expansion and its subsequent increase in population, the Village of Elgin now had enough citizens to become a town rather than a village. Because the name Elgin had been previously used, the name of the newly formed town was changed to the Town of Clifton in 1856 (it amalgamated with the Village of Clifton).

In October of 1881, at the request of its residents, the former Town of Clifton received permission from government to change it’s name to the Town of Niagara Falls. By 1881, the population of the Town of Niagara Falls was 2,623 citizens — a far cry from its population today at approximately 88,000 inhabitants.

Zimmerman created an estate property along the south side of Ferry Hill (now Clifton Hill) that he called “Clifton Place”. On his estate, Zimmerman undertook to create many gardens and several large fountains. He planned to build a mansion that he hoped to live in once it was completed. His estate was bounded by Clifton Hill, the Niagara River, Robinson Street and Ferry Road (now known as Victoria Avenue). Today this property is owned by HOCO (Sir Harry Oakes Company). Unfortunately, Samuel Zimmerman saw only the foundations of his mansion built before he was killed on March 12th 1857 in the Desjardins Canal Railway accident. The train derailed and plunged into the canal killing 59 persons including Samuel Zimmerman.

The first buildings that Zimmerman built on his estate were four gatehouses. Each gatehouse was large enough to be a home in itself. A gatehouse was located at each of the four entrances to his 52 acre estate.

Zimmerman also built a large stable for his horses and carriages of imported English yellow brick. The stables continued to exist until the mid 1950’s when the new Park Motor Hotel (eventually to be the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill) was built. The Comfort Inn Clifton Hill was eventually demolished in 2015 to make way for added new attractions such as the Niagara Speedway (coming Spring 2018). However, prior to this, Niagara Falls Historian Sherman Zavitz pointed out a section of the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill that still had a portion of the foundation of the Clifton Place stables still standing, which visibly showed the same circular small stable windows.

The Bush Estate Clifton Place stables in 1946 (built in 1856 by Samuel Zimmerman)

Upon Zimmerman’s death in 1857, his estate was then taken over by U.S. Senator John T. Bush (the estate included the ownership of the first Clifton Hotel). It was Bush that completed the restoration of the mansion, and even though the Zimmerman/Bush mansion no longer stands, the “Zimmerman Fountain”, a large stone fountain built by Samuel Zimmerman below the moraine (now Queen Victoria Park), remains today.

Senator Bush and his family lived in the mansion for the next 50 years. The view of Niagara Falls was available from the many windows on the upper floors, the balconies and from a little stone turret built into one wing of the mansion.
Following the death of Senator Bush, his daughter Miss Josephine Bush continued to live in the mansion until 1927. In 1928, Miss Bush sold the Bush Estate to Sir Harry Oakes, and the mansion was later torn down by June 1, 1937.

By the time that Sir Harry Oakes purchased this land, tourism was beginning to boom in Niagara Falls and Oakes knew to capitalize on that. Oakes was a Parks Commissioner who donated the piece of land in which the Oakes Garden Theatre currently resides to the Niagara Parks Commission, in exchange for another plot of land located just above the park, which is today the south side of Clifton Hill, with the current large chain of attractions, restaurants and retail outlets still owned and operated by the Oakes family.

Before he made the exchange though, Oakes wanted to create something beautiful. He began to hire individuals such as architect Dunington-Grubb, Stensson, and William Lyon Somerville to create an intricate design of gardens and stone sculptures in 1937. The garden was officially open to the public in 1937 and in memory and in honor of Harry Oakes the garden was named Oakes Garden Theatre to pay tribute to all the hard work and dedication he put into the creation of this new beautiful spot in Niagara to visit. It officially opened on September 18, 1937. Oakes Garden Theatre is fan-shaped, with the stage placed with the Niagara Falls as a natural backdrop.

The Oakes Garden Theatre is located at the foot of Clifton Hill and the Niagara Parkway. The two open pavilions were deliberately designed so that one was perfectly aligned on the axis of the Horseshoe Falls, and the other with the American Falls.

Across from the Oakes Garden (on the south side of Clifton Hill between Falls Avenue and River Road), you can’t help but notice the large beautiful monument that pays tribute to all the veterans from Niagara Falls that lost their lives during WWI, WWII, and the Korean War. This national monument was originally unveiled in 1927 to honour those that died fighting in the First World War, and then was updated in 1982 to include the Second World War and Korea. There are 136 names inscribed on this monument. It is important to note that while that number doesn’t seem large, during the time of the First World War, Niagara Falls had approximately 1100 people serve in the war — thus telling us literally on such a large-scale how many men sacrificed their lives that came from Niagara Falls.

Family Vacations: Travel Tips for Niagara Falls

Reading Time:  5 minutes -Family Vacations: 5 Tips for Surviving Family Travel in Niagara Falls
If getting prepared to go on a vacation wasn’t stressful enough trying to get the house in order, keeping the workload to a minimum, and arranging for a house and pet sitter, you now have to deal with rounding up all the kids and getting to where you need to be — all while ensuring that the task is stress free. Through trial and error, you will eventually find ways to keep family vacations a success. Here I will share 5 tips to make for smooth, hassle-free family vacations to Niagara Falls.

1

GIVE YOURSELF LOTS OF TIME

You can’t just leave on a dime like you used to. Gone are the days of spontaneity, and this goes for all ages of kids. Packing for a family vacation requires a lot of planning out and extra luggage. Got a baby? Don’t forget diapers, baby wipes, extra clothes for guaranteed “spillage”, baby food and formula and medicine, a stroller…the list is endless. Toddlers? I made the mistake once of forgetting the pack and play. Unless you plan on running after your child 24/7 with no break whatsoever, this one is huge! Of course if you are taking a flight you won’t be bringing this, so it helps to book with a hotel that has cribs readily available. Definitely use this as a selling feature when booking ahead. If a crib is provided to you, remember to inspect it first.  Many are old and structurally unsafe, and others come with bedding– such as folded full-sized sheets– that could present a hazard to your sleeping child.
Packing aside, just getting children dressed, fed and ready to go — without temper tantrums is a feat. Make your family vacation the smoothest transition as possible. Allow time for washroom breaks and don’t forget if your child has  a tendency to get motion sickness to bring the Gravol!
2

Book Ahead and Look Into Family Vacation Packages

via niagarafallscliftonhill.com
Finances can get really tight when budgeting for a family vacation, and if you have babies or toddlers, chances are that this is a time where finances are the most strenuous. I’ve learned that you should never book your vacation more than 4 months out or you will be paying an arm and a leg. Ideally, aim for 8-12 weeks in advance and be flexible on departure and arrival times. Also, I find it helps what days of the week you choose as well. For instance, Monday – Thursday will be cheaper then Friday – Monday. Weekend rates will definitely be higher in cost.
When money is tight, it is important to stay close to the hottest attractions without straying too far from your hotel. Clifton Hill has all the World Class Attractions Within A Block of Niagara Falls!
It doesn’t hurt to sign up for newsletters on hotel chains that you already like, so that you are well informed of any upcoming room deals. There are plenty of hotels in Niagara Falls with great mid-week room deals and family package deals, such as the Niagara Falls Family Fun Package at the Howard Johnson Hotel by the Falls. Stay in the know by signing up for their newsletters, blogs and generally just doing research ahead of time.

3

Be Prepared for the Climate

Children dressed comfortably for the weather and terrain will be happier. Pretty simple right? But this one tends to get overlooked. Check the Niagara Falls weather forecasts before you leave, and make sure you are all dressed for the environment. Don’t forget hats, gloves, umbrellas and comfortable shoes! It’s these little things that make all the difference between a happy child and a complete meltdown. If you forget to bring these items, your hotel will have a nearby shopping outlet to purchase what you need.
A great bonus to staying close to the Clifton Hill area hotels, is the close proximity to the Canada Trading Company. They have some great kid essentials in there, such as comfortable “Crocs” footwear, umbrellas, hats, gloves, sunglasses, etc. Not to mention, they carry interactive games to keep them occupied in the hotel room. The old adage “Hope for the best but be prepared for the worst” is so true.
4

Remember to Bring the Tablet/iPad and Download Apps

There are many toddler friendly apps nowadays, and thanks to technology you don’t need to necessarily cram your luggage with toys to make the family vacation enjoyable for everyone. Download movies and games to go, and choose apps for your Smartphones that are very helpful for traveling with babies. For example, “KIDzOUT” is a free apps that is a must-have tool for families on the go. Diaper changing stations, kid-friendly restaurants, parks and medical facilities are listed here for the places that you wish to travel. You can add and rate locations…making it a useful parent-to-parent tool!
5

Prepack Your Own Snacks

Inevitably the best part about being on vacation is not having to worry about doing any cooking, and you’ll want to dine at different Niagara Falls restaurants anyhow as part of the whole family vacation experience. However, for snacks on the go and to save a little money, pre-pack some healthy, good-for-you foods ahead of time to slash costs and avoid any road trip pit-stops on the way because of hunger pains. Fruits, veggies, granola bars and trail mix are great options. Also, don’t forget about plenty of juice and water that the kids can fill up on between meals — keep them feeling hydrated and fed to reduce the chance of mood swings!
Whether you are planning a family vacation road trip, or via air, these are all helpful tools I found to keeping the peace within the family dynamic, while keeping the cost low and staying prepared.

Our Pictures From The WildPlay Niagara Falls Whirlpool Adventure Course

Reading Time:  4 minutes -On May 19th, WildPlay Niagara introduced its newest addition, the WildPlay Niagara Falls Whirlpool Adventure Course. We had a couple employees on Clifton Hill (Amy and Margaret) try out the course this past weekend.
They share their pictures and give their reviews.

Margaret:
“It made me realize what I was actually capable of doing. It looks easy from down below but it’s very challenging and I love a challenge!”
Amy:
“At check-in, the girls were very nice, they asked for my birthday as confirmation for the waiver we had to fill out.  We were then sent down to be suited up.
A woman put us in the harnesses and tightened them up. She told us to put on the helmets and led us over to the training area. We were given a brief and informative run through on how to use the harness clips (2) and the zipline. We all went through the practice area and then we were lead up the top of the registration building where the first tightrope is located. There was a different girl there to instruct you to wait your turn and advises us that the oldest person to complete the course was in his 90s! Ok, confidence boost, thanks I needed that. We clipped our red safety clip to the line and off we went.
Beginning the course – At first I was really pumped.  Looking out you can see all the challenges and you want to master the course. However, after setting out on the tightrope you begin to realize how high it actually is. I found each obstacle fairly easy for my fitness level, but in combination with the height and weather (high winds) there was an added challenge.  Also, there was added paranoia knowing that after you do the first zipline there is no turning back. There is no one with a trampoline waiting for you to quit…and if you lose your footing, you must self-recover. The staff refer to each of the sections of the course between each large post as ‘games’.  I enjoyed the satisfaction and triumph of completing each game and also the relief as I bear hugged the giant post that thank the Lord I didn’t fall.
The views where beautiful and I really enjoyed seeing the top of the WEGO bus as it passed under my shaking sneakers on the 2nd or 3rd tightrope, which were nicely suspended over the exit driveway. At this point, my mind goes back to the waiver I signed…
Completion-  There is a rope and its far away from the platform. The girl will ask you to reach for it. Once you manage to get a hold of it, she will instruct you to attach it to your harness and hold your harness close to the base. Then you will be instructed to ‘walk off’ the platform into a free fall style exiting. I was facing the whirlpool and feeling the wind gusts come up from the gorge, which defiantly added to the weightless feeling on my body.  About mid-way down, the rope pulls you tight the way a seatbelt does when you slam on the brakes, and you are gracefully lowered to the ground.
Verdict-  I would do it again in a heartbeat but never on a windy day.  Great for bragging rights and the bucket list for the old man.
