Voyage Into Niagara Falls’ Boat Touring History

Reading Time:  7 minutes -

The ice boom on the Niagara River began its retreat recently which means that the opening of Niagara City Cruises (Hornbower on the Canadian side), and the Maid of the Mist (US side) is here!

Niagara City Cruises (Hornblower) opens March 28th, 2024 for the season and the Maid of the Mist is tentatively opening April 4th, 2024 with bookable dates starting now.

Both of these Niagara Falls Boat Tours are tremendously popular tourist attractions and are not to be missed this Spring!

Continue reading to review the timeline of the original Maid of the Mist boat tour (North America’s oldest tourist attraction), progressing to our current date which includes the addition of the Niagara City Cruises (Hornblower) boat tours.

1846 – The Maid of the Mist Ferry Service Launched

Crossing the Niagara River in order to transport people was unheard of until the introduction of small boats in 1834. On May 27th, 1846, the very first Maid of the Mist boat was first introduced, but not as a tourist attraction. It ferried people, cargo, and mail across the river for a small fee. However, making money in this regard was short-lived after the first Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge was completed.

1848 saw a temporary bridge introduced, and in 1854 a lower deck was opened for pedestrian and carriage purposes. Taking money away from the ferry, it was decided to turn the Maid of the Mist into a tourist attraction, allowing people to get as close to the Falls as possible.

Maid of the Mist Boat Tour – 1st Generation (1854-1860)

On July 14th, 1854, a new Maid of the Mist was launched. This one was 72 feet long and featured a paddle boat engine rather than a sidewheel steam engine.

With business dwindling mainly as the result of the onslaught of the American Civil War (1861-1865), the boat was sold at a public auction to a Montreal firm in 1861.

However, the boat had to be successfully delivered to Lake Ontario, which meant it had to be navigated through the Great Gorge Rapids, the Whirlpool, and the Lower Rapids.

Captain Robinson undertook the frightening task on June 6th, 1861, and successfully made it through the rapids (although lost the smoke stack in the process).

Service was not restored until 1885 under a new partnership: The Maid of the Mist Steamboat Company.

Maid of the Mist Boat Tour 2nd Generation: 1885 – 1955

The second generation Maid of the Mist was launched in June of 1885 which reached closer to the Horseshoe Falls than its previous counterparts.

Then, an additional boat was unveiled in 1892 on the American side. These boats sailed until April 22, 1955, when they burned in an accident on the Canadian side.

Maid of the Mist Boat Tour 3rd Generation (1955 – 1990)

On July 28th, 1955, a third generation Maid of the Mist I (1955–1990) was introduced to replace the destroyed vessels — this time, it was made of steel and powered by diesel engines.

In June 1956, an additional Maid of the Mist steel boat was added to the fleet and was christened the Maid of the Mist II (1956 – 1983)

On July 9th, 1960 the Maid of the Mist II contributed to the heroic saving of 7 year old Roger Woodward, the boy who became the first person to survive a plunge over the Horseshoe Falls wearing only a life jacket. The Maid of the Mist II was just making its turn below the Falls when a crew member spotted the boy.

Captain Clifford Keech maneuvered the boat so the crew could successfully save Roger, who luckily only sustained a minor concession, and was in hospital for only 3 days. In 1983, the Maid of the Mist II was sold and it served as a Missionary ship on the Amazon River.

Maid of the Mist Boat Tour 4th Generation (1972 – Now)

Maid of the Mist III:
1972–1997

Maid of the Mist III takes to the water, carrying 210 passengers. This boat is a 65-foot-long, 65-ton vessel powered by two 250-horsepower diesel engines.

Maid of the Mist IV:
1976-2013

Maid of the Mist IV, a 300-passenger boat, is introduced. The new boat is 72 feet long, 24 feet wide, weighs 74 tons and is powered by two 250-horsepower diesel engines.

Maid of the Mist V:
1983-2013

Maid of the Mist V gives passengers the thrill of their lives. It’s all steel, 72 feet long, weighs 74 tons and powered by two 335-horsepower diesel engines to safely carry 300 passengers.

Maid of the Mist VI:
1990 – Present

In 1990, the Maid of the Mist VI was launched into service. The 145 tonne, 80 foot all steel double deck boat is capable of carrying 600 passengers at a time!

This made it the 10th Maid of the Mist boat to contribute to the Niagara Falls Boat Tours — and the largest, which is still running today. Accompanying boat VI was the addition of the Maid of the Mist VII on July 11th, 1997 (also still running today) at 80 feet and with the capacity to carry 600 passengers as well.

New York State Governor Saves the Maid in Late 2012

On December 4th, 2012, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo visited Niagara Falls, New York to make a major announcement: An agreement between Cuomo’s administration and the Maid of the Mist calls for the company to pay for $32 million in upgrades near the site of the former Schoellkopf power plant to turn the area into a winter storage dock for its two-boat American fleet.

On Thursday, October 26th, 2013, the Maid of the Mist did its final boat tour on the Canadian side. The business continues to operate from the US side of the gorge and departs from its dock just beyond the Rainbow Bridge. The Canadian side was replaced by Hornblower Niagara Cruises, a California-based company at the start of Spring of 2014.

Maid of the Mist Boat Tour 5th Generation (Launched 2019)

New-build emission-free vessels was launched during 2019 season

In 2019, the Maid of the Mist launched the first two new all-electric, zero-emission passenger vessels constructed in the United States. The new catamaran-style vessels will provide more than 1.6 million guests from around the world with an up-close, iconic view of Niagara Falls. The vessels feature a wide stance, resulting in a smooth, quiet ride, allowing them to better enjoy the roar and majesty of Niagara Falls.

ABB, a pioneering technology leader in digital industries, will supply a comprehensive integrated power and propulsion solution for the newbuild vessels, including lithium-ion battery packs and an onshore charging system, enabling sustainable operation with maximum reliability.

Powered by ABB’s zero-emission technology, the two fully-electric vessels will take tourists to the heart of the Niagara Falls, undisturbed by engine noise or exhaust fumes. Batteries will be recharged for seven minutes after each trip to 80 percent capacity, allowing for maximum efficiency and battery life.

Maid of the Mist VI (1990) and Maid of the Mist VII (1997), were removed from service when the new vessels began operating.

Niagara City Cruises (Formery Hornblower): Launched in 2014

Niagara City Cruises (Hornblower) offers two catamarans that carry approximately 700 people, and a third charter boat reserved specifically for private functions that carries approximately 150 passengers.

The Niagara City Cruises official ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Wednesday, May 14th, 2014 which showcased speeches by the Niagara City Cruises (Hornblower) CEO, Terry MacRae, Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati, Mory DiMaurizo, General Manager of Niagara Cruises and the Niagara Parks Commission chair, Janice Thomson. It officially opened the following day to excited crowds.

Wearing their red ponchos, locals and tourists alike flocked the Niagara City Cruise Plaza to become a part of history on its grand opening day. The distinct differentiation between the Niagara City Cruises and the Maid of the Mist docked on the US side, is the swarm of customers wearing red (Niagara City Cruises) and blue (Maid of the Mist) ponchos. Both these Niagara Falls boat tours are anticipating another exciting season. This past Winter season saw far less ice form on Lake Erie, which flows into the Niagara River. With the Niagara City Cruises (Hornblower) running and Maid of the Mist soon to launch in April.

This is the 9th season for Niagara City Cruises (Hornblower), and — wait for it — the 177th year for Maid of the Mist.

International Women’s Day: 5 Women Who Made an Impact in Niagara Falls

Reading Time:  4 minutes -

Get ready to embark on a journey honoring exceptional women who’ve left an indelible mark on the rich depth of Niagara Falls history. As we approach International Women’s Day on March 8th, 2024, it’s time to shine a spotlight on the remarkable contributions of these five inspiring figures. From social and economic achievements to cultural and political influence, these women have played a pivotal role in shaping the narrative of Niagara Falls. Join us in celebrating their legacy and the countless ways they’ve shaped the community we know today.

Annie Edson Taylor

For her 63rd birthday on October 24th, 1901, Annie Taylor became the first woman and the first person ever to successfully conquer the Niagara Falls in a barrel. Taylor used a custom-made barrel for her trip, constructed of oak and iron and padded with a mattress.
She was hoping to achieve fame and riches. She did assume fame for sure, but unfortunately she died in poverty on April 29, 1921 at the age of 82.

After her 20 minute minute trip within the barrel, she told the press:

“If it was with my dying breath, I would caution anyone against attempting the feat… I would sooner walk up to the mouth of a cannon, knowing it was going to blow me to pieces than make another trip over the Falls.” – Annie Taylor

Laura Secord

Laura Secord was a Canadian heroine during the War of 1812. She is known for having walked 20 miles (32 km) out of American-occupied territory in 1813 to warn British forces of an impending American attack.

On June 21st, 1813, Laura Secord overheard of plans for a surprise American attack on British troops at Beaver Dams, which would have gained more American control in the Niagara region. As her husband was still recovering from his own war injuries, Secord set out herself early the next morning to warn the Lieutenant. She walked from present-day Queenston through St. Davids, Homer, Shipman’s Corners and Short Hills at the Niagara Escarpment before she arrived at the camp of allied Mohawk warriors who led her the rest of the way to the headquarters at the DeCew House. A small British force and a larger contingent of Mohawk warriors were then readied for the American attack.

The Real “Maid of the Mist”

Have you ever wondered how the “Maid of the Mist” got its name?

There’s a Native American Myth behind it.

There are a few different variations, but one is that a young and suicidal Seneca Native girl, named Lelawala, entered a canoe with every intention of going over the Falls after the loss of her husband. She was rescued by “Heno” the Thunder God, who invited her to live with him and his sons under the Falls. Under secrecy, the sons told her of a dangerous serpent that lived under the water. The serpent would poison the water in which her people drank from. Anxiously, she returned to tell her people that they were to drink only from the springs and when the night of the serpent’s visit arrived, they were to destroy the god snake with spears, tomahawks, bows and arrows. They successfully battled the snake and upon returning to his lair in the river, the snake got his head caught on one side of the river and its tail got caught on the other side. In its violent death throes, it formed a semi-circle in the shape of a horseshoe on the brink resulting in the Horseshoe Falls.

Lelawala returned to the cave of the God Heno, where she reigns to this day as the Maid of the Mist.

Maria Spelterini

Maria Spelterini was a 23-year-old Italian tightrope walker who was and still is the only woman to cross the Niagara Gorge on a tightrope, which she did on July 8, 1876 as part of a celebration of the U.S. Centennial.

She crossed by using a 5.7 cm wire located just north of the lower suspension bridge.

After the first success, Maria Spelterini began to up the ante. On July 12th 1876, Spelterini crossed wearing peach baskets strapped to her feet (see above photo). One week later, she crossed blind folded and only three days later, Spelterini crossed with her ankles and wrists handcuffed.

On July 26th 1876, Maria Spelterini made her farewell crossing in Niagara Falls.

Theodosia Burr Alston

*Portrait by John Vanderlyn*

Theodosia Burr Alston was born on June 21, 1783, and was the daughter of US Vice President Aaron Burr. In 1801, she married Joseph Alston, a wealthy landowner from South Carolina.

Under her suggestion, they honeymooned at Niagara Falls, becoming the first recorded couple to do so. After this, they inspired Jerome Bonaparte, Napoleon’s younger brother, and his bride, Elizabeth Patterson, to honeymoon at the Falls 3 years later. This became the start of a trend — and Niagara Falls soon became known as the “Honeymoon Capital of the World.”

Maid of the Mist Launches First All-Electric Vessels in the Nation

Reading Time:  6 minutes -

Maid of the Mist, New York State Parks, New York Power Authority and ABB Partner to Launch the First All-Electric Vessels in the Nation

Launch Builds on Sustainable Tourism at World Famous State Park

Electrification of Busy Tour Boats Helps Meet Governor’s Goals for 100% Carbon-Free Electricity by 2040 and Reduces Transportation Sector’s Contribution to Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The Maid of the Mist, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, New York Power Authority and ABB announced today that the Maid of the Mist, the iconic boat tour that has navigated the waters below Niagara Falls since 1846, has launched the first two new all-electric, zero-emission passenger vessels in the United States. Guests from around the world will now enjoy a smoother, quieter and greener ride when visiting the nation’s oldest state park.

“Niagara Falls is a wonder of the world unique to Western New York and Maid of the Mist has given people from all walks of life an up-close look at its majesty for more than 150 years,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. “Having this natural wonder in our backyard means we have a special responsibility as its steward and protecting it for future generations. This new fleet of all-electric vessels will protect the health of our waterways and environment, and is another example of New York State building back better, smarter and greener.”

“The launch of the James V. Glynn and Nikola Tesla, the first passenger vessels of their kind in the United States, will markedly enhance the visitor experience, providing a smooth, quiet trip to and from the base of Niagara Falls,” said Maid of the Mist President Christopher M. Glynn. “With no engine noise, our guests will be amazed by the sounds of nature and the roar of the falls they will hear from the decks of our vessels.”

New York State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said, “New York State Parks is committed to executing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s vision for protecting our environment and in making New York State the cleanest state in the nation. We also know that visitors feel good when they can do their part to protect our land and water while enjoying themselves. We thank the Maid of the Mist for their leadership in sustainable tourism.”

John R. Koelmel, Chair, New York Power Authority Board of Trustees, said, “As a life-long Western New York resident, I take great pride in the natural wonder we have in Niagara Falls and have always cherished our ability to share it with visitors from around the world. I am very proud of the leadership role that NYPA has taken to help make the electrification of the Maid of the Mist tour boats happen. The new and quieter zero-carbon boats will not only be better for our environment, but they will also allow visitors to better hear the incredible roar of the Falls. Congratulations to Chris Glynn and his Maid of the Mist team, the New York State Parks Department, ABB and all those involved in making this electrification come alive, once again, making the Buffalo/Niagara region a trendsetter in energy innovation and environmental stewardship.”

Gil C. Quiniones, President and Chief Executive Officer at the New York Power Authority, said, “The transportation sector currently generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions. In order for us to meet the Governor’s nation-leading target of a 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, we must take bold actions now. The electrification of these two brand-new tour boats sets the example that we can electrify our economy which is good for our communities, our health and our climate.”

The boats, named James V. Glynn and Nikola Tesla are the first passenger vessels of their kind in the United States.James V. Glynn is named in honor of the longtime Maid of the Mist Chairman and CEO James V. Glynn who is celebrating his 70th year with the corporation. Nikola Tesla is named for the Serbian-born engineer behind the design and construction of the world’s first hydro-electric power plant, located in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The first guests will be able to board the new vessels Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 10 a.m.

New York State Parks and New York Power Authority collaborated with the Maid of the Mist operators and ABB, a pioneering technology leader in digital industries, to make the electrification of the boats a reality. NYPA is providing clean, renewable hydropower for the operation of the vessels and has provided technical support on the electrification process. NYPA is going to also provide ongoing monitoring of electricity usage for the boats to ensure they are being energy efficient and cost effective. The new vessels are powered by high-capacity battery packs supplied and integrated by ABB. In addition to batteries, ABB has supplied a comprehensive integrated power and propulsion solution, including an onshore charging system, enabling sustainable operation with maximum reliability.

The blue and green color pattern on the exterior of the two vessels pays tribute to the fact that Maid of the Mist is investing in green energy to help preserve the natural wonder of Niagara Falls for generations to come. Prominent on each side of the vessels is a water droplet icon with three elements: waves of water representing Niagara Falls, a lightning bolt to symbolize electricity and the turbine to characterize hydroelectric power, with a blue line representing the water flowing from the upper deck of the vessel into the turbine.

“Maid of the Mist truly leads the way by building its new fleet with renewable electrical solutions and proving to the entire world that zero-emission transportation is achievable with today’s technologies,” said Juha Koskela, Division president, ABB Marine & Ports. “Much like Nikola Tesla, under the leadership of Christopher M. Glynn, Maid of the Mist is a trailblazer that is set to inspire many others to adopt sustainable technologies.”

During the Covid-19 global health crisis, the Maid of the Mist has implemented a number of operational changes to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, including limiting occupancy in all boats and elevators at 50% capacity; placing physical distancing markers throughout the facility and boats as a reminder to maintain social distance; placing directional arrows and signage to remind visitors to maintain social distancing while guiding them in a way that minimizes contact with others; requiring all visitors to wear a face covering as a condition of admission; enhanced cleaning; and health screenings for all staff.

The Maid of the Mist first launched in 1846, making it one of North America’s longest running tourist attractions. Maid of the Mist vessels have been continuously operating tours to the base of Niagara Falls for 134 consecutive years, providing guests from around the world with an iconic experience. James V. Glynn joined Maid of the Mist in 1950 as a ticket seller and purchased the company in 1971. Under his leadership and that of current president Christopher M. Glynn, Maid of the Mist has expanded operations, now attracting more than 1.6 million guests each season.

In 2012 Maid of the Mist faced closure in the absence of storage space for its boats on the New York side of the river. Governor Cuomo struck a deal to keep the boats running and produce increased revenues for Niagara Falls State Park. The Maid of the Mist Corporation agreed to invest $32 million in the former Schoellkopf Power Station site near the falls, in the Cataract City, to make it suitable for the winter storage and maintenance of its boats. The New York Power Authority owns the land at this site. NYPA provided clearance and technical support that enabled the boat operator to utilize the former Schoellkopf site for its boat launch and operations center. The new site replaced the previous winter storage location near the base of the Horseshoe Falls in Ontario. Also, under the memorandum, the company agreed to increase its license payments to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, totaling $105 million over 30 years – three times the revenues that were projected for the 30-year period when a contract was initially approved in 2002.

The new Maid of the Mist vessels build on a $70 million revitalization of Niagara Falls State Park. The initiative has renewed the park’s major viewing areas including Luna Island, Prospect Point, Lower Grove, Three Sisters Islands, North Shoreline Trail, Luna Bridge, and Terrapin Point with new pedestrian walkways, enhanced landscaping and signage, new benches, lighting and railings.

Maid of the Mist is to go Electric in 2020

Reading Time:  < 1 minute

Nearly 175 years after the first steamboat was launched into the water, the Maid of the Mist is to go electric in 2020.

May 27th, 1846 was when the very first Maid of the Mist vessel was introduced, and the boats have ferried millions of people from the Lower Niagara River to the base of the Falls and back since then. It is North America’s oldest tourist attraction, and by mid-September 2020, the first two all-electric, zero-emission passenger vessels will be launched into the water. Since 1955 when the Maid of the Mist I was introduced, the vessels were made of steel and powered by diesel engines.

Footage from a successful test run on Monday, December 16th, 2019:

While the Hornblower Niagara Cruises will continue to operate on the Canadian side, these new vessels designed by Propulsion Data Services and under construction by Burger Boat Company based out of Manitowoc, Wisc. will certainly bring Western New York State new tourists, as well as continuing to draw in locals.

Riders will welcome the smooth and silent ride in order to better appreciate the sound of the roaring Niagara Falls. The passenger vessels will be powered by high-capacity battery packs with an onshore charging system. The zero-emission boats will complement efforts to build a more environmentally friendly tourist destination to the Falls.

The Maid of the Mist VI and Maid of the Mist VII will be removed for service completely after the new vessels begin operating.

Niagara Falls Weekend Getaways

Reading Time:  3 minutes -
Can you believe in less than 4 weeks it’s Labour Day? Where did the summer go?
If you haven’t had a chance to get away for a few days this summer it’s time to start planning. Quite often I’m asked, “As someone who lives in Niagara, how would you spend two days here?”
Assuming I was coming from Toronto for a 2 day getaway, as a couple or with family, my itinerary would look something like this:
Not being an early riser, I would arrive in Niagara Falls around noon and would stay at the Comfort Inn on Clifton Hill of course. While check in isn’t until 2PM,  the bell desk will store my bags and we  would grab a quick bite to eat at Tim Hortons or Wendy’s.
Then it would be off to the Whirlpool Jet Boats in Queenston or simply stroll to the bottom of Clifton Hill for a ride on the new Hornblower Niagara Cruises. The refreshing coolness of being on the water, accompanied by splashing waves on the Jet Boat or the Falls bellowing mist while sailing on the Hornblower cruise vessel, is sure to wake you up after the drive to Niagara and lunch. Either way, its way more fun than a shower!

Next it’s off to the Niagara Glen across from the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens. Taking the staircase down into the Glen, you will feel like you are entering a different world. It feels like the temperature drops 10 degrees as you hike the trails of the Glen at your own speed. You can get right up to the river at this point sitting on the rocks you can wave at the Jet Boat as it comes and goes out of the whirlpool.

The next part of my day would be either exploring the fruit belt, between Queenston and Niagara-on-the–Lake, stocking up on fresh fruit for later, or stopping at a winery or two for gourmet wine samples.
Then it’s back to the Clifton Hill Niagara Falls Hotel for check–in and to relax for an hour to recharge and get ready for a fun filled night on Clifton Hill! Before dinner we’d pick up our Fun Passes at the SkyWheel, then enjoy a delicious meal at Kelsey’s, with its prime view of either Clifton Hill or Victoria Ave from its open air patios and great food at reasonable prices!

Then with Fun Pass in hand, it’s off to let loose on The Hill! The Clifton Hill Fun Pass is the best deal in town, 5 of the top attractions in the city plus Great Canadian Midway tokens for $25.95 is less than $5 for each attraction. The Skywheel is spectacular at night as is Dinosaur Adventure Golf; They set the stage for a fun-filled evening the whole family can enjoy.
Clifton Hill is still hopping right into the wee hours of the morning, and is a great place to end the evening with a night cap at Boston Pizza / Strike Rock and Bowl.

The next morning would start with a satisfying breakfast provided free with your hotel room at the Comfort Inn. Then we would either take a stroll down to the Falls or if we had purchased the Marineland package as part of our hotel stay it would be off to Marineland for the day.
Then it’s homeward bound after enjoying a great mix of excitement and relaxation for 2 days. The combination of great deals and free activities makes this trip affordable as well as fun for couples or families.
That’s how I would spend a two day getaway in Niagara Falls.
How would you spend your two day getaway to Niagara?

Farewell Maid of the Mist – A Voyage Into History

Reading Time:  4 minutes -With the closure of one of North America’s oldest tourist attractions on the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls, the Maid of the Mist, it has brought some mixed emotions among Canadian residents — and especially those that live in Niagara Falls that considered the Maid of the Mist to be one of Niagara’s biggest draws in tourism. The iconic boat ride that first opened in 1846, set sail for the last time yesterday on Thursday, October 24, 2013.
CTV news did a story on the final voyage out of the Canadian side of the border, and this shot was taken aboard the Maid’s last journey out of harbour. View the story here. Photo cred by Aaron Lynett/CANADIAN PRESS:

The operation is run by the Maid of the Mist Steamboat Company which is owned by the Glynn family of Lewiston, New York since 1971. This family will continue to run operations from the U.S. side in the 2014 season.
The Maid of the Mist will operate from the U.S. side of the gorge and will depart from the dock just beyond the Rainbow Bridge. While the 2013 season was set to be over, the company has extended their operating days to October 25th and October 26th, offering free rides from the American side of the Falls due to the kickoff of the Niagara Falls International Marathon set to take place on Sunday morning.
History of the Maid of the Mist
As early as 1834, small rowboats acted as ferries passaging people, luggage and cargo across the Niagara River. It soon became apparent that a profit could be turned, and in 1846 the very first steam ferry they named the “Maid of the Mist” took sail across the River.

Everything went well for a couple of years, until 1848 when a suspension bridge was built making it easier for traveling from one country to the other. It was then that Niagara Tourism really flourished when it was decided to market the Maid of the Mist as a sightseeing venture, taking passengers closer to the Falls. It did great and second Maid of the Mist boat was built in 1854.
The original boats were coal-fired, wooden boats. Today, they carry up to 600 passengers per trip and are made with steel. They are diesel-powered ships for the half hour journey with seven boats total.

The Mist became well known for its role in the July 9, 1960, rescue of Roger Woodward, a seven-year-old boy who became the first person to survive a plunge over the Horseshoe Falls with nothing but a life jacket. The “Maid II” which was retired in 1983, was the boat involved in saving the life of the little boy and was a major news story at the time.
Here is excellent coverage about the Roger Woodward story via “the Vinyl Cafe with Stuart MacLean”:

Read the Roger Woodward story here, recounted in 2010 (50 years later) by the Star, complete with others that have survived the plunge across the Niagara Falls.
Hornblower Niagara Cruises will take over operations on the Canadian side, offering passengers state-of-the-art catamaran boats, extended operating hours, online ticketing options and even special event and group function rentals! Earlier this month, I sat down with Mory DiMaurizio, Hornblower Niagara Cruises (HNC) General Manager to discuss some general questions I had about the new operation. Read about the interview by clicking here.

While I look forward to the new upcoming season and will welcome the Hornblower Niagara Cruises, I am sad to see such an influential part of Canadian history go. Generation to generation, we brought our family overseas from England and would always make sure to take them on the Maid of the Mist. It was such a popular attraction of not only Niagara Falls, but around the globe. From Marilyn Monroe to Katy Perry, hundreds of celebrities have ridden the Mist and millions of tourists have had the privilege to ride what I considered to be one of the most successful facets of International tourism.
I will miss you Maid of the Mist!!
