No question, women have evolved and have come a long way in such a short period of time. Just a little over 100 years ago, in 1908 specifically, women’s oppression and inequality spurred women into such an outrage that 15,000 of our finest got together and marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. This seems like such a long time ago, but in reality this affected your great grandmother and the vast majority of our grandmothers that may be still alive to recall the evolution of female acceptance and political empowerment. Fast forward to today; not only can women be celebrated as equals, but “International Women’s Day” is now an official Holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Laos, Madagascar, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia! The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends and colleagues with gifts.
Niagara Falls offers everything perfect for the women in your life. The beauty of the majestic Falls in itself is enough to take her breath away, but it’s also the perfect location for family fun and a romantic getaway. The Comfort Inn Clifton Hill is only a few minutes away from a number of main attractions such as the Niagara Skywheel and a short, breath-taking travel into wine country, the famous Niagara-On-The-Lake! The town bustles with an old-time vintage image and many wineries offer wine tasting packages and tours. The Comfort Inn Clifton Hill offers many custom packages that she will love, such as the “Niagara Couples Getaway Package”. This includes a comfortable stay within the hotel and a dining voucher to either Kelsey’s or Boston Pizza also located right on property…plus some other amazing deals!

The onset of Spring has made me feel a little nostalgic and I have to mention how beautiful the trails are in Niagara. The Niagara River Recreation Trail stretches for 53 kilometers alongside the Niagara River. I have had some of my best times through those trails and make sure to bring your camera! I jog my way through those trails alone, yet in welcome company with the number of plaques and monuments that are marked throughout the lush vegetation. She will love it!
While you are on the Niagara Parkway, be sure to stop into the Butterfly Conservatory. There is over 2,000 tropical butterflies that flutter freely around you as you stroll through this tropical, self-guided pathway. Currently, until May 12, 2013, they have an added exhibit as well that is free with your entry price called the VENOM exhibit. Don’t worry, all is safe! While she is busy with the butterflies, you men can catch up with snakes, spiders and amphibians…oh my!

In honour of International Women’s Day I also have to mention that if you happened upon this blog and you are a woman or you know a woman that needs help, the Niagara Region offers two places that you can turn to for support. Gillian’s Place (905-684-8331) and Women’s Place of South Niagara (905-356-5800). They are both devoted to ending abuse by empowering women with safe shelter,24 hour support lines, emotional support and legal advice.
Happy International Women’s Day!
