Earth Day in Niagara Falls!

Reading Time:  3 minutes -

What and When is Earth Day?

Earth Day  is celebrated every April 22nd, and it’s when 1 billion people in over 170 countries focus on environmental issues by teaching the importance of energy conservation, recycling, sustainable living and more. Out of the 1 billion people from around the world that take part, 6 million of those are Canadians. It is the largest environmental event in the world.

This year Earth Day in the city of Niagara Falls is when residents  will be encouraged to participate in activities at home that create a healthier environment, setting an example for the next generation. The city will reinforce environmental awareness and bring the community together through its love of nature throughout the year.

The community is  also encouraged to share positive, exciting and unique stories, on social media, about how they support environmental conservation (ie. composting at home, reusing old products, homegrown fruits/veggies, etc.) to inspire others to follow by example.

How did Earth Day begin?

The first Earth Day, which began in 1970 in the United States, was super-headed by Wisconsin Governor Gaylord Nelson and Harvard University student Denis Hayes. They inspired the US congress to pass clean air and water acts and establish the Environmental Protection Agency. The first International Earth Day was in 1990, and two million Canadians joined 141 nations in celebrating it.

Teaching Children about Earth Day

Schools inspire students to take action and learn simple strategies to conserve energy, protect the environment and influence others on how easy it is to do so. These simple solutions can be carried out from Earth Day straight into a way of life for generations to come. Activities carried out on Earth day, not only teach the importance of protecting the Earth, but also the value of community teamwork! Here’s a few other ideas that you can adopt yourself, while stressing the importance to your kids:

For Kids:

  • Encourage family and friends to participate in Earth Day activities.
  • Turn your energy towards the backyard and consider doing some yardwork.
  • “Turn off the lights”, energy conservation. Plan activities all day with the lights off.
  • Turn the devices off and play board games or cards with family.
  • Composting. Make an effort to compost daily.
  • Plant an “Earth Day” legacy tree in the backyard with your family.
  • Post online what you plan to do during Earth Day to inspire others to participate.

For Parents

  • If you are starting to garden, consider planting some pollinator flowers to attract bees, which are essential to our food chain.
  • Register for the City’s annual Earth Day Community Clean Up event.
  • Reduce greenhouse gas pollution by walking, riding your bike.
  • Ditch the Plastic. Stop buying single use plastic beverage containers and instead, buy liquids in bulk.
  • For new parents, consider using cloth diapers.
  • Think before you print.
  • Use the microwave rather than the stove to reheat leftovers. They use up to 75% less electricity.
  • Use the right size pot on the right size burner. A small pot on a large burner can waste up to 40% of heat.
  • Use lids while cooking to reduce energy consumption by 14%.
  • Conserve water with shorter showers, wash clothes in cold water, and plant drought-resistant gardens.
  • Buy local Ontario produce and flowers.

NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Sept. 25, 2009) – Residents, businesses, and tourists of Niagara Falls will benefit from nearly $2.7 million in upgrades to the Queen Street streetscape, thanks to a contribution announced today by the Honourable Rob Nicholson P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Mr. Kim Craitor, Member of Provincial Parliament for Niagara Falls, and His Worship Ted Salci, Mayor of Niagara Falls. “I have been amazed at the determination and energy of the Queen Street community’s efforts to bring life, vitality and people back to this important historic neighbourhood,” said Kim Craitor MPP for Niagara Falls. “The provincial government has been proud to support the community’s innovative programming over the last two years through Trillium and Celebrate Ontario. This past summer we invested in bringing the Go Train to town. Now I am delighted that the McGuinty Government is able to help build on this success and further invest in rebuilding and revitalizing the streetscape to continue the dream of building a vibrant and economically successful and sustainable tourist attraction.” Continue reading Canada-Ontario Partnership to Revitalize Downtown Niagara Falls Streetscape

$100 million Niagara Falls Convention and Civic Centre

Reading Time:  2 minutes -Printed in the August 2008 Update Business News is published by the City of Niagara Falls Community Services Department.

$100 million Niagara Convention and Civic Centre

Niagara Falls will be home to the region’s first convention and civic centre in 2011.
Building upon significant private sector funding commitments; $70 million in Federal and Provincial funding; and support from local municipal and regional governments, plans for the new privatepublic- sector joint venture have moved into high gear.
With funding secured, the Niagara Convention and Civic Centre NCCC began advertising for a president and general manager in late 2007. Kerry Painter, an Ontario native, was the successful candidate and started in her new position and assumed her role with the NCCC on April 15. Ms. Painter brings a wealth of experience to her new job having previously operated various public assembly facilities in Detroit, San Francisco and suburban New Orleans.
One of the first orders of business for the new management team was to put a plan in place to help market the yet to be constructed facility. In May 2008, NCCC unveiled a new positioning and brand identity for the centre that was created by Cundari SFP. “UnConventional Experiences” is the new tag line that will re-enforce local tourism stakeholder’s views that the Niagara region is not your regular convention and meeting place location, and that it offers so many more non-traditional experiences to potential visitors. A new logo that includes a nontraditional interpretation of the famous cataracts and waterfalls was also made public.
NCCC staff have also been actively working on securing bookings. The first major conference booking for the NCCC will be the 2014 Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference.
The convention centre will be located merely 500 yards from the Canadian Horseshoe Falls in the Fallsview Tourist District. The 232,000 sq. ft. complex will feature a 100,000 sq. ft. free-span exhibition hall, 30,000 sq. ft. of flexible meeting space, a 500-seat theatre, state-of-theart technology, and awe inspiring scenery. Presently, the convention centre site is surrounded by 5,000 upscale hotel rooms within a one mile radius, along with numerous dining, retail and entertainment facilities, including the one billion dollar Fallsview Casino Resort.
The $100 million Niagara Convention and Civic Centre project plans to attract approximately 500,000 visitors per year to the Niagara region and create 1,000 person-years of employment annually. The facility is forecasted to generate (more…)
