Oprah be darned! Zach Anner starts his own travel show on YouTube

After rocketing to internet stardom thanks to his audition video for Oprah Winfrey’s Your OWN Show reality TV series — and unwittingly finding himself in the middle of a possible vote-rigging kerfuffle (see below) – the irrepressibly charming Zach Anner has taken his idea for “a travel show for people who never thought they could travel” to YouTube. Anner, who has cerebral palsy (which he calls “the sexiest of the palsies”), posted a series of videos about his current home town of Austin, Tex. back in June. But since he didn’t really need to travel all that far to shoot it, we’re counting the episode he posted Aug. 4 of his tour of Niagara Falls as the true series premiere of Zach in the Buff. And it is awesome.

Niagara Falls Tourism launches new website
The Niagara Falls Tourism Bureau in Niagara Falls, Canada has just recently launched an all new website!
Their Web Design company, 180 Marketing in St. Catharines, did an outstanding job with the new web design. This new site is a huge improvement from the previous version, which was saturated with banner ads, hard on the eyes (too many reddish colors), and had some navigational issues.

Click Here to Visit Niagara Falls Tourism’s Official Site
The new site has some great features, which include:
-Dynamic animated splash page
-Much larger photography in each main category
-Simplified and effective menu navigation
-New Vacation Planning Section (eg. MyNiagaraFalls)
-Effective navigational drop down menus with zoom out
-High end video presentation section (eg. FallsTV)
-Balanced use of color

Stories by Dennis Roddy, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
NIAGARA FALLS, Canada — Niagara Falls spills 750,000 gallons of water per second down a 167-foot drop in a roar that began when glaciers melted 10,000 years ago.
Tourists come by the millions, stare into the white mist, and marvel at one of the wonders of the world. Then they have wonders of their own: What to do next?
As Nick Ramunno, who oversees a hall full of wax rock stars there for the staring at, puts it: “You need something else besides the Falls. You can only look at the Falls so long.”
That’s when it’s time to climb Clifton Hill.
There is no compromising with Clifton Hill. Either you recoil in horror at the noise, lights, crowds, smells, outsize waffle cones and howling fright houses or you give yourself over to the Great Spirit of Kitsch that has pervaded since the days hotel owners shanghaied each other’s guests at the train station and shook them down for trips to the bottom of the Falls. THE GOOD, BAD AND UGLY OF TOURISM
By Frank Thomas Croisdale
In most areas working under the Gregorian calendar, summer ended on Sept. 21, but in Niagara Falls, the season was extended by an extra month and didn’t officially end until Oct. 25. That’s the date the Maid of the Mist put out the last boat ride to the falls until next spring.
It’s only after that event that area tour companies switch their Spring/Summer tour schedule over to a Fall/Winter offering. It’s only then that other local attractions officially go to fall hours. The Friday night fireworks over the falls cease and local hotels roll back their room rates in hopes of appealing to locals who might be in need of a weekend getaway.
It’s also an opportune time to take a look back at the tourism season that was and discern the good from the bad and the ugly.
Let’s start with the unpleasantness and work our way up, shall we? (more…)

Niagara Falls Tourism Announces the Launch of a New Blog Featuring “Mr. Niagara”
Niagara Falls Tourism’s new and improved Blog sees Niagara through the eyes of expert George Bailey
Niagara Falls, Ontario (PRWEB) October 21, 2008 — Niagara Falls is a romantic and thrilling destination. Some people, like Niagara native George Bailey, might even say it’s magical. Endearingly referred to as “Mr. Niagara,” George Bailey is soon to be the personality behind Niagara Falls Tourism’s new Blog.
Slated to launch on October 21,2008, the new and improved Niagara Falls Tourism Blog will offer readers a peak into the vast history and culture of one of the most popular destination points in Canada, like no book or information package can. With “Mr. Niagara” at the helm, the Niagara Falls Tourism Blog will also feature a personal point of view.
We want the Blog to engage visitors and provoke conversation, and there’s nothing more engaging that
dramatic and quirky stories of Niagara history and events.
Bailey’s father served as Captain of the famous Maid of the Mist, and in some sense, he grew up on the famous ship, surrounded by the majesty of the Falls. Now 64 years old, Bailey’s stories about Niagara Falls abound. He has worked for the Niagara Parks Commission, Niagara Falls Sheraton Hotel and Skylon Tower, and Bailey has led countless celebrities on tours of the Falls–and has animated stories to tell about them, including Princess Diana’s 1991 visit.
In addition to working on his sixth guidebook about Niagara Falls and his upcoming Niagara Falls Tourism debut, Bailey has published articles and has been interviewed at the consummate Niagara expert on high-profile programs such as CNN, Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, Discovery Channel, Canada AM and Good Morning America.
According to Niagara Falls Tourism’s Executive Director, Anna Pierce, “We want the Blog to engage visitors and provoke conversation, and there’s nothing more engaging that “Mr. Niagara’s” dramatic and quirky stories of Niagara history and events.”

New York and Canadian Cities Seem Like Two Different Worlds Economically
By JONANN BRADY
Sept. 16, 2008
As manufacturing jobs left the area in droves, upstate New York’s economy has been struggling for well over a decade.
The community around Niagara Falls struggles, but in Canada it’s another story.
Rome, N.Y., once known as Copper City for its wire mills, suffered a major blow when an Air Force base shut down in 1995.
As “GMA” passed through the city on its Whistle-Stop Tour, residents talked about the tough times they’ve faced.
“Rome doesn’t have anything for jobs,” one unemployed woman told Robin Roberts. “If you want a good job, you need to be able to travel outside of Rome.” (more…)

Niagara Falls: Still a worthwhile travel destination

Niagara Falls, one of the greatest natural wonders of the world and legendary spot for honeymooners, was my latest travel destination with a Seattle theater critic friend.
As a guest of Ontario Tourism, I not only had the opportunity to enjoy nine plays at the Shaw Festival, the only theater in the world specializing exclusively in plays by Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries, but I also savored ice wine from the most celebrated grape and wine producing region in Canada, took a step back in history at Niagara-on-the-Lake and got up close and personal with the “thundering water.” (more…)

Hope you bought a clean pair of underwear! Mwah-ha-ha!”
Welcome to Canada’s permanent circus, a.k.a. Niagara Falls, Ont., where the buildings bark at you in menacing tones. (A character outside The House of Frankenstein actually does accost you about your underwear.)
Niagara Falls, where hotdogs are part of a complete breakfast. And where waxy incarnations of Brangelina are on a humanitarian mission to bring more cheesy tourist snapshots into the world. (more…)
