NIAGARA FALLS, NY (07/15/2010)(readMedia)– The nation’s oldest state park, Niagara Falls State Park, celebrated its 125th Anniversary with a concert by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on Goat Island and the dedication of a restored pocket park.
New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Carol Ash was on hand to praise the park as a worldwide destination. “Today marks the 125th anniversary of when this park became the land of the people of New York State. For generations, people have come from all over the world not just to visit this incredible park, but to experience it. NIAGARA FALLS — Work has started on the development of an ecological restoration plan for the Niagara Gorge Rim area.
The Niagara Falls and River Region Chapter of Wild Ones Niagara announced Tuesday the hiring of Environmental Research and Design — an environmental consulting and design firm with offices in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse — to study an area of the gorge from Main and First streets in the Falls to Center Street in Lewiston. PASADENA, Calif. — Lovebirds Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) and Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) will be heading to Niagara Falls shortly for their wedding this fall on NBC’s “The Office.”
Greg Daniels, the executive producer of the Emmy Award-winning comedy that is set inside the fictional Dunder Mifflin paper supply company in Scranton, Pa., confirmed here Friday that director Paul Fieg is currently in the Falls to scout out locations for the wedding. (more…)

THE GOOD, BAD AND UGLY OF TOURISM

In most areas working under the Gregorian calendar, summer ended on Sept. 21, but in Niagara Falls, the season was extended by an extra month and didn’t officially end until Oct. 25. That’s the date the Maid of the Mist put out the last boat ride to the falls until next spring.
It’s only after that event that area tour companies switch their Spring/Summer tour schedule over to a Fall/Winter offering. It’s only then that other local attractions officially go to fall hours. The Friday night fireworks over the falls cease and local hotels roll back their room rates in hopes of appealing to locals who might be in need of a weekend getaway.
It’s also an opportune time to take a look back at the tourism season that was and discern the good from the bad and the ugly.

For over ten years now, New York City billionaire Howard Milstein has owned 140 acres of land in Niagara Falls, and virtually all of it remains as vacant today as they day he obtained it.
All over the Falls, you see signs for his company-Niagara Falls Redevelopment. Milstein’s holdings include the Native American museum The Turtle which has been closed for years, and sits just steps from the state park, as well as the closed Nabisco plant. (more…)

NIAGARA FALLS: $7.9M Old Falls Street redesign plan passes hurdles

The return of downtown’s Old Falls Street corridor passed two more road blocks on Wednesday.
USA Niagara’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve the $7.9 million project targeting the west pedestrian mall area and reaffirmed the state’s desire to purchase the old Wintergarden building and demolish it.
Later, USA Niagara President Christopher Schoepflin and Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster confirmed a deal has been reached to take over leasing rights at the west mall, which will allow the reconstruction plans to continue unencumbered. (more…)
