Niagara Falls – Site work has begun on the city’s new four-pad arena complex and if everything goes to plan the facility should open for the start of the 2009 season.
Crews are moving ground at the site, located at the former Cytec site on Fourth Avenue off of Stanley Avenue, and the city’s parks, recreation and culture department unveiled a sign depicting an artist’s rendering of the facility facing Stanley last week.
The sign states the site is the future home of the Niagara Falls Four Pad Arena Complex.

B.C. man jumps off Niagara Falls … again

By Derek Spalding

Thursday, September 27, 2007

NANAIMO, B.C. – For the second time in three years, Dean Sullivan rappelled down the cliffs of Niagara Falls without injury.

Still, the Nanaimo man is not officially recognized for his daredevil antics.

Sullivan – also known for bungee jumping off Vancouver’s Lions Gate Bridge in 2002 – loves the attention his stunts attract, so he said he was quite upset when the Niagara parks commission refused to acknowledge his 2004 jump.

In a letter, the parks commission told him they would not rank him with other daredevils who have gone over because he was not caught and charged for his jump.

Tightrope Walker Looks to Cross Falls

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario (AP) — For more than 40 years, visitors to this tourist town have gazed upward to a fiberglass likeness of 19th century tightrope walker Charles Blondin occupying not only his fabled wire, but his place as Niagara Falls’ most famous funambulist.
This summer, tourists also have been bending their necks for a flesh-and-blood contemporary. Twice each day, Jay Cochrane has traversed a wire between two 20-story towers set 1,000 feet apart, addressing onlookers with a showman’s skills honed over a 50-year career.
“Welcome to Canada!” he announces from above as his electric blue costume’s sequins spark like flashbulbs in the sun.
By summer’s end, Cochrane will have performed 300 “skywalks,” as he calls them, a block or so from the water’s edge.
But he will hardly be done with Niagara Falls. Continue reading Tightrope Walker Looks to Cross Falls

Passport law excuses kids
Chertoff expected to reveal plan changes in Detroit today
Associated Press
OTTAWA — The U.S. government is to announce today that it will excuse children from a contentious law requiring all visitors to show a passport at border crossings starting in 2009.
The Canadian Press has learned that U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff will make the announcement during a stop in Detroit. He will speak at the Detroit Economic Club at the Detroit Marriott.
The move to exempt travelers under age 17 from the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative would simplify cross-border travel for families, sports teams, youth groups and school field trips.
It is not expected to apply to airports, where children will still require passports.
