‘Fertility statues’ free to touch: Ripley

Reading Time:  < 1 minute

by the Canadian Press – from Yahoo Canada News
NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – Hard to believe, but a pair of African statues “could be the cheapest fertility treatment in the world,” says Ripley Entertainment.
The company — known for its Believe It or Not museum-style “odditoriums” in several countries — says hundreds of women have reported becoming pregnant soon after touching the 1 1/2-metre-tall wooden statues, which once stood in the lobby of Ripley’s Orlando, Fla., headquarters.
Publicity for the “legendary fertility statues,” said to have been acquired in the Ivory Coast, includes a YouTube video showing women holding babies. One of the moms — a Ripley employee — says: “I touched them (the statues) a couple of times and I got pregnant a couple of times.”
The statues have been seen “by millions of people since their special powers were discovered in 1994,” Ripley says in a news release.
After completing the European portion of a three-year international tour, the statues are on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not Odditorium in Niagara Falls, Ont., until Sept. 26.
Anyone who believes the marketing hype — or just has an open mind — is welcome to touch the statues free of charge.

Cowichan Valley’s Big Stick finds its way to Niagara Falls museum

By Kevin Rothbauer, The Citizen  August 27, 2010
The Cowichan Valley’s famous hockey stick is now an attraction in Niagara Falls.
No, the Big Stick itself hasn’t moved, but a display featuring the enormous piece of sporting equipment, and including a story from the Citizen, now adorns the walls of the Guinness World Records Museum. Right next to a display about Wayne Gretzky and his multitude of hockey feats.
“They have a lot of NHL memorabilia in that corner,” said Dick Drew, who helped fight for the Cowichan Valley to get the Big Stick in the first place, then fought for it to be recognized as the world’s largest, and is now battling to get it honoured in museums and halls of fame. “It’s great looking. They estimate their attendance to be about a quarter of a million a year.”
The museum is located right in the centre of Niagara Falls, one of the biggest tourist attractions in Canada. (more…)

Niagara Falls and Maid of the Mist

Reading Time:  < 1 minute

from the Vacation Gals
There is one word to describe Niagara Falls: Epic. The water that produces this spectacular sight is delivered by former glaciers which happens to be four of the five Great Lakes: Erie, Huron, Michigan and Superior. After the water plunges down the falls it makes it way down Niagara River to Lake Ontario to the St. Lawrence River to the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a long but spectacular journey.
I’m not sure what triggered my fascination with Niagara Falls, but this has always been one destination I was determined to visit, including a ride on Maid of the Mist. This week I was able to cross them both off my list while my children get to add it to their list of things they’ve seen and I can tell you it was a memorable experience for us all. (more…)

Oprah be darned! Zach Anner starts his own travel show on YouTube

After rocketing to internet stardom thanks to his audition video for Oprah Winfrey’s Your OWN Show reality TV series — and unwittingly finding himself in the middle of a possible vote-rigging kerfuffle (see below) – the irrepressibly charming Zach Anner has taken his idea for “a travel show for people who never thought they could travel” to YouTube. Anner, who has cerebral palsy (which he calls “the sexiest of the palsies”), posted a series of videos about his current home town of Austin, Tex. back in June. But since he didn’t really need to travel all that far to shoot it, we’re counting the episode he posted Aug. 4 of his tour of Niagara Falls as the true series premiere of Zach in the Buff. And it is awesome.

Niagara Falls, ON. – (August 4, 2010) – Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium in Niagara Falls will host the return of the world-famous Ripley’s Fertility Statues for public viewing from September 4 to September 26. More than 2,000 women have reported that they became pregnant shortly after touching the wooden statues.
