Niagara Falls may be the headline, but it is only the beginning of the region\u2019s waterfall landscape. Follow the Niagara Escarpment west from the Falls and smaller cascades appear in conservation areas, wooded valleys and historic mill sites stretching through St. Catharines and Lincoln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fall is one of the most rewarding times to explore them. The forests surrounding the escarpment begin changing from green to yellow, orange and red, while cooler weather makes longer walks more comfortable. Rainfall also matters: several of Niagara\u2019s smaller waterfalls are seasonal, so their appearance can change considerably from one week to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For visitors staying near Clifton Hill, the easiest approach is to see Niagara Falls on foot first<\/strong>, then turn the rest into a half-day or full-day scenic drive through the Niagara Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best waterfall experience in the region is also the easiest to reach from Clifton Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Niagara Falls is actually made up of three waterfalls: the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls<\/strong>. The Horseshoe Falls measures about 57 metres high and approximately 670 metres across its crest, while the American and Bridal Veil Falls sit across the river on the New York side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In autumn, much of the colour appears along the Niagara Gorge and on the American side of the river, creating a broad backdrop behind the Falls when viewed from the Canadian side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
