Meridian Centre Now Open

Reading Time:  2 minutes -

There is a new multi-purpose facility to the Niagara Region built at 55 McGuire St. in St.Catharines in the heart of the Downtown core. The Meridian Centre, with a total project budget of $50 million, will be able to host a range of entertainment and event offerings, including being the new home to the Niagara IceDogs (20-year lease agreement), a variety of concerts, hosting conventions, and a variety of other sports. The Niagara IceDogs are eager to begin the 2014/15 OHL season here. The Meridian Centre offers them a brand new dressing room, player lounge, and their own on-site weight room and training facilities.
Hockey Canada also recently announced that St. Catharines will host the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship, bringing the event to Ontario for the first time at the new Meridian Centre:

As I write this (October 16th, 2014), The Niagara IceDogs actually play their home opener and first ever game in the Meridian Centre tonight against the Belleville Bulls, after starting with six road games. The game is completely sold out due to eager fans and the overwhelming interest in the new arena. The Meridian Centre holds a capacity of up to 4500 fans for hockey games and 6000 people for concerts!

Access to the new Meridian Centre is made easy by parking for over 1000 vehicles at nearby City parking lots and garages, and two pedestrian bridges to connect the Meridian Centre to St. Paul Street. The North Bridge is located between James and Queen streets and the South Bridge is located across from William Street.
This past weekend over 6000 people visited the new Centre for its open house launch on Saturday, October 11th.
Upcoming Concerts announced!
The first official concert takes place on Tuesday, October 21st in which City and Colour will hit the stage (singer/songwriter and St.Catharines native, Dallas Green).  Joel Plaskett will open.
City and Colour video “You and Me”:

The second concert announced is the Tragically Hip on Tuesday, February 17th, 2015.  This is a stop along their North American tour that will commemorate the re-issue of their third album, Fully Completely, originally released in 1992.
Tragically Hip performing one of their #1 hits from that album, “Courage”:
