Niagara’s two casinos could help the Fort Erie Race Track

Track, casinos sharing makes ‘great deal of sense’
But Sadinsky wants government to decide specifics
Posted By BY COREY LAROCQUE REVIEW STAFF WRITER

Niagara’s two commercial casinos could help the Fort Erie Race Track in a lot of different ways if they were under the same financial umbrella, says Stanley Sadinsky, the head of a panel that published a study on reviving Ontario’s horse-racing industry.

When Sadinsky’s report, “It’s All About Leadership,” was released Tuesday it suggested Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort, Casino Niagara and Caesars Windsor could “assist” the operation of the racetracks in Fort Erie and Windsor.

But the report lacked specific proposals about how to do that -deliberately so, said Sadinsky, a Queen’s University law professor and former chairman of Ontario Lottery and Gaming. (more…)

Will province gamble on new gaming plan?
CASINOS, SLOTS MIGHT WORK TOGETHER
Posted By BY COREY LAROCQUE REVIEW STAFF WRITER

Casino Niagara and Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort could “assist” the Fort Erie Race Track, according to a government study on how to prop up Ontario’s horse-racing industry, though the report doesn’t specify how to do that.

It has left government officials and gambling-industry representatives at a loss for words about what kind of assistance the casinos might offer the struggling racetrack industry.

“I don’t have an answer. I saw it. I guess you’re looking at every opportunity there might be,” Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor said after reading the report by Stanley Sadinsky, a Queen’s University professor and former chairman of Ontario Lottery and Gaming.

The provincial government commissioned Sadinsky last year to write a strategic plan aimed at helping Ontario’s horse-racing and horse-breeding industries. (more…)

275 casino staff opt for job buyouts

Posted By COREY LAROCQUE

More than 275 casino workers took the recent buyouts offered by Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara, a move the company made to shed some of its full-time employees and shift the emphasis to part-time employment.

In a memo to all casino workers, Niagara Casinos president Art Frank called the first-ever voluntary resignation program a “win/win for all parties.”

“It is a win for the company, as we have been able to rebalance our full-time to part-time mix that allows us to be more responsive to changing market conditions,” Frank wrote in a memo dated Saturday, the day after the deadline for employees to apply for a buyout.

It’s also a win for people who took advantage of the offer, because they took “an opportunity to make a significant change in their lives,” he wrote. Casino management had pitched the buyouts as a chance for veteran workers or those close to retirement to make a change. (more…)

Unions duel for right to organize casinos
Posted By COREY LAROCQUE

Two rival unions are going head to head in a bid to win the right to represent Niagara’s 5,000 casino workers.

The Canadian Auto Workers and the Labourers International Union of North America both say recent wage freezes and buyout packages are proof casino workers need union representation.

“The company is forcing buyouts on its full-time employees and trying to bring about a staff of all part-time workers,” said Gerry Varricchio, a national representative with LIUNA.

Casino management recently offered voluntary resignation packages to its full-time employees. Today is the deadline for workers to apply for a buyout that would give a departing worker three weeks’ wages for every year of full-time service.

The casinos have also offered full-time employees the chance to switch to part-time status in an attempt to rebalance their mix of workers. (more…)

Casino worker paying it forward; Tina Hill chosen as casino’s volunteer of the year
Posted By JENNIFER PELLEGRINI

Seven years ago, Tina Hill’s husband nearly died.

“Three times in one year they said he wouldn’t make it,” the administrative assistant in the table gaming department at the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort said. “When you’re watching your husband lying there, getting the last rites, you change the way you look at things.”

Grateful for the fact that her husband is now able to manage his illness through medical care, Hill began giving back to the community.

“I really honestly, truly believe that I have to pay that back,” Hill said. “And I do that with things I’m passionate about.” (more…)

CRACKING THE CASINOS’ CODE
Why people lose and keep gambling
Posted By JENNIFER PELLEGRINI

If you’ve gone to a casino, it’s not a coincidence if you felt drawn in by the flashing lights, ringing bells and the maze of slot machines.

That’s exactly how casino operators want it to be, said Karen Finlay, associate professor at the University of Guelph’s school of Marketing and Consumer Studies.

“It’s the design of the casino,” said Finlay, who has studied the issue of problem gambling for several years.

Finlay and a team of researchers at the university recently unveiled a lab known as ‘Virtual Vegas’ – a 360-degree, 1,700 square foot composite of 17 of the Sin City’s most famous gaming floors. It’s aimed at helping researchers understand what compels people to keep playing even after they know it’s time to go home…(more)
