Work crews are busy removing the Lake Erie-Niagara River Ice Boom.

The New York Power Authority, who own the boom in partnership with Ontario Power Generation, began opening the 22 spans Tuesday.

The boom, which is installed every winter, must be removed when the barrier of ice at the entrance of the Niagara River is about 402 square kilometres or less.

Ice cover on the lake was about 310 square kilometres Tuesday morning, making it possible to remove the 500- foot-long spans. (more…)

The Niagara Outdoor Show, staged for the first time in Niagara Falls, was a success and may return next year as a two-day event.

“I’m happy with the attendance here,” said show organizer Bill Whitehead, adding more than 800 people came through the Optimist Club Sunday.

“We had a lot of people inquire if the show could be two days next year.”

Everything for fishing, hunting and boating was on display at the Optimist Club, including rods and reels, rifles, boats, all-terrain vehicles and much more.

Do fish go over Niagara Falls? Do they live?

November 12, 2007

From the Globe and Mail

We’re going over that?

APRIL HOLLADAY

Globe and Mail Update

November 12, 2007 at 3:38 PM EST

I visited Yosemite National Park in California recently where I saw rivers that poured over cliffs, becoming thousand-foot-tall thundering waterfalls before continuing on their courses at the bottoms of valleys. No rocks greet her, only a pool whose bottom is 150 feet down. She plunges into the air-bubble-cushioned pool, bobs up and swims slowly away, stunned but alive.
