Inked and Pinked
Local News
Posted By JOHN LAW , REVIEW STAFF WRITER
Before she got the party started Saturday night, pop star Pink had her eye on Niagara Falls.
“It’s my second time here,” said one of the top-selling female singers of the past decade.
“I went on the Maid of the Mist last time. I was considering the barrel this time.”
With hits like So What and Trouble, the 30-year-old Pink — real name, Alecia Moore — was in town for the grand opening of husband Carey Hart’s first Canadian location of his Hart & Huntington Tattoo Co. chain. The couple were greeted by hundreds of fans gathered at a VIP reception at Margaritaville.

A once famous and now abandoned department store in Niagara Falls burned to the ground Sunday after firefighters spent over eight hours battling the stubborn flames that refused to burn out.
Rosbergs department store at Queen Street and Erie Avenue was once a community icon but had been abandoned for several years.
Seeing the fire was too much for Don Carrel, the grandson of founder Jacob Rosberg.(more…)

Oneida closing Falls outlet

The good news is there are deals to be had at the Oneida outlet store on Stanley Avenue in Niagara Falls — the bad news is the store will close next month and some employees will find themselves out of work.
“It’s sad that it’s closing,” said Angela Midea, who visits the store one or twice a year. She had no idea the store was closing when she dropped in Tuesday to see what was on sale.
“I picked up some good deals on some cups, forks and spoons. You can’t go wrong when you pay 50 cents for a spoon,” said Midea, who spent $41 and was quite pleased by what she had saved. (more…)

End of the line for Main/Ferry icon
Posted By RAY SPITERI, REVIEW STAFF WRITER
Bob Muller chokes up a little as he talks about closing the business that has been in the community for 101 years.
He’s the third-generation owner of Muller Dry Goods, which is set to join a long list of businesses that have shut their doors in the historic Main and Ferry area.
“Unfortunately, the days of a dry goods store seem to have come to an end,” said Muller, who with his father, George, owns the business on Ferry Street. (more…)

New stores at Niagara Square
Posted By ALISON LANGLEY
Niagara Square’s extreme make over is almost ready to be unveiled.
One end of the Montrose Road mall has been essentially a construction site for the past years as crews worked on several new stores.
The new businesses reflect a focus on accessorizing the home rather than the body.
“We’re not a fashion centre but we’re becoming a home fashion centre,” said Tammy Robertson, marketing co-ordinator for the mall.
The newest addition will open its doors to the public on Saturday.
Jysk (pronounced yi-sk), will feature 19,000 square feet of furniture, accessories and bedding.
The Scandinavian-based company operates in 20 countries with more than 1,000 stores. (more…)

Springlicious proves Niagara Falls wants vibrant downtown, organizers say
Three days of food, wine, beer and music bring thousands to see new-look downtown
Posted By Corey Larocque
If downtown Niagara Falls comes back to life, the Springlicious weekend could earn a spot as a turning point in the city’s history. The wine and beer expo brought thousands of people to Queen Street from Friday night to Sunday afternoon.
Many saw the event, as well as the recent cosmetic improvements to some buildings, and the filling of a dozen previously vacant storefronts with art galleries, as a sign there’s some progress downtown.
“I’m moving back if they have something like this all the time,” said Kim Maraldo, who used to rent an apartment on Queen Street across from city hall. She moved to Welland two years ago but is reconsidering after seeing the recent progress downtown.
The community festival seemed to be having the effect organizers hoped for – to show off the recent improvements made to some Queen Street buildings and to draw some attention to the arrival of a dozen art galleries in formerly vacant storefronts.

Expect to see bears on Clifton Hill
Posted By JENNIFER PELLEGRINI
A new attraction is coming to Niagara Falls that children from the local area and beyond will be beary excited about. Build-a-Bear Workshop, the St. Louis-based company that gives little ones – and not-so-little-ones – the chance to pick and create the fuzzy friend of the dreams, is set to open at Victoria Avenue and Clifton Hill March 28.
“We’re beary thrilled,” Paul Bundonis, Build-a-Bear’s chief workshop bear, said from his office in Missouri, using Build-a-Bear speak that includes “beary,” “paws-itively,” cele-bear-ation and “op-bear-tunities.”
The new Niagara Falls store will be one of 20 the company plans to open in 2008 – and one of two opening in Canada this month.
A store was set to open in Midtown Plaza in Saskatoon March 14 and another one will open in the New Sudbury Centre this summer.
But the Niagara Falls shop will break with the tradition of opening a Build-a-Bear store inside a shopping mall and will join ranks with ones in Myrtle Beach, New York City, Las Vegas and Anaheim that are located on the street or in outdoor venues in tourist-heavy areas. (more…)

Lundy’s Lane soon home to new stores
A new shoe store and Shopper’s Drug Mart are moving onto Lundy’s Lane.
The construction site on Lundy’s Lane beside Country Style Donuts will be a new, large-format Shopper’s Drug Mart, said Tammy Smitham, the company’s director of communications.
Smitham said the new, 14,000-square-foot store will replace the 8,000-square-foot store at the corner of Drummond Road and Lundy’s Lane.
The owner of the current store and the staff will relocate to the new store once construction is complete in November, Smitham said. (more…)
