Parks nixes marketing deal with Imax
Proposal rejected in meeting held behind closed-doors

The Niagara Parks Commission won’t play favourites by making a marketing deal with the Imax theatre it wouldn’t make with another attraction, says chairman Jim Williams.

“In other words, we’re not going to treat them with any special consideration,” he said in an interview Friday.

Imax Niagara Falls had proposed promoting each other’s properties because the commission’s newest attraction, Niagara’s Fury, will compete with the 23-year-old theatre on Fallsview Boulevard.

In a private meeting Friday, the Niagara Parks Commission rejected a proposal from Destination Cinema, Imax’s Utah-based parent company, to hand out discount coupons at each site to encourage tourists to visit the other. (more…)

Parks’ attraction draws flak from Imax competitor
CEO has ‘very serious concerns’ about impact on theatre

The Niagara Parks Commission’s newest attraction has raised the fury of the owners of the Imax Theatre in Niagara Falls, who are worried about the impact Niagara’s Fury will have on their business.

“We’re in a very direct, competitive situation with the Fury,” said Bob Perkins, chief executive officer of Destination Cinema. The Utah-based company owns Imax Niagara Falls and five other theatres in North America.

“We have serious concerns regarding ‘Niagara’s Fury’ attraction and how that attraction will harm our business,” Perkins wrote in a June 6 letter to Niagara Parks Commission chairman Jim Williams, a copy of which was obtained by The Review.

His company wants to make a deal with the commission to be included on the adventure pass, a one-price ticket that gives tourists admission to numerous attractions. (more…)
