Niagara Falls Hosts Clarkson Cup 2012

March 19, 2012

Clarkson Cup 2012 Comes to Niagara Falls

Are you one of thousands of hockey fans who will be flooding Niagara Falls this week for Clarkson Cup Action?

Named after former Governor General of Canada Adrienne Clarkson the women’s version of the Stanley Cup will reign over the falls from March 22nd to the 25th.  Teams from all over North America will be battling it out at the Gale arena round robin style. The top two teams will go head to head for the championship title. Montreal will be looking to repeat last years win against the Toronto Furies when TSN broadcasts the final game.  Between 20 to 30 Olympians such as Caroline Ouellette, Tessa Bonhomme, and Meghan Agosta will be in Niagara Falls, hopefully they have time to unwind on Clifton Hill.

There are plenty of attractions to keep busy with between or after games.  Tournaments can get hectic so it may be nice to relax with a ride on our world famous SkyWheel.  Soaring 175 feet (53 meters) over the Niagara Falls horizon you can get many memorable pictures from the fully enclosed gondolas.

We are looking ahead to another great week of weather for the Niagara region.  When you’re not in the cold arena, get into the sun and try your hand at a game of Dinosaur Adventure Golf.  As one of the newest attractions along the hill this mini putt is like walking into the age of the Dinosaur.  The fully functional volcano, realistic characters and sound effects will get you excited as you play the 18 hole course.

Boston Pizza is a great place to take a break.  Enjoy some great food with the family, and maintain the sporty atmosphere.  The kids will not get bored with wall-to-wall arcades, and our Strike Rock and Bowl entertainment centre.  Some ways you can save a few dollars while you are visiting is by picking up hotel packages and attraction passes.  The Clifton Hill Fun Pass is a great way to go for any family to save money on the most popular attractions.

Find out more ways to save, and all the fun things there are to see and do at www.cliftonhill.com

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — A new public skating rink will open next month “a stone’s throw from the brink of the Horseshoe Falls,” say organizers of the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights.

The outdoor Rink at the Brink, two-thirds the size of an NHL rink, will be located across from the newly renovated Table Rock Centre and offer excellent views of the Falls, says a release.

It will be open daily between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. from Nov. 23 to Feb. 28. Skates and helmets will be available for rent, and skating lessons will also be offered.

Admission without skate rental is $8 for adults, $5.75 for children.

“We think it’s going to be a huge hit with both local residents and visitors to Niagara Falls,” said festival chair Joe Miszk.

HOCKEY’S BIRTHPLACE: NIAGARA FALLS

September 12, 2008

HOCKEY’S BIRTHPLACE: NIAGARA FALLS
Kingston and Montreal may disagree, but two Swedish researchers say they have evidence that shows the first known game of ice hockey may well have been played on the Welland River.
Posted By DAN DAKIN

Shooting for a place in history Canada’s game started in Niagara Falls, if you believe what a pair of Swedish researchers have uncovered.

Ask hockey historians where the birthplace of hockey is and the most common answers you’ll hear are Kingston, Montreal and Windsor, N. S. Niagara Falls wasn’t even on the radar.

But a recent discovery in a 162-year-old book written by a British soldier has suddenly put Niagara into the field as one of the first locations to host an ice hockey match.

The passage, written by Capt. Richard Levinge, describes a jovial scene on Chippawa Creek where 80 or more soldiers split into two teams to play “hockey on ice.” The creek, known now as the Welland River, is a tributary of the Niagara River located in the Niagara Falls neighbourhood of Chippawa.

Though the book in question, “The Echoes From the Backwood; or Sketches Of Transatlantic Life,” was published in London in 1846, the historical significance of a single paragraph on page 250 wasn’t discovered until July 10 this year.

Swedish hockey researchers Carl Giden and Patrick Houda found the paragraph that now has people re-examining what was known about the early records of the sport.

It’s the second-oldest written reference ever found regarding hockey being played on ice.

“During the winter, the skating on Chippewa Creek was excellent and added not a little to our amusement,” Levinge wrote in his book chronicling life in Upper Canada. “Large parties contested games of hockey on ice, some forty or fifty being ranged on each side.” (more…)

Niagara Falls makes a bid to become Hockeyville

City makes a bid to become Hockeyville
Posted By JENNIFER PELLEGRINI

Last spring, Niagara Falls resident Becky Puddicombe mobilized citizens to show their civic pride in having the city named one of Canada’s wonders in a contest on CBC Radio.

This winter, city leaders hope residents will revive the energy shown to boost the city’s profile by banding together to name Niagara Falls Canada’s Hockeyville.

The competition, co-sponsored by Kraft Canada, the CBC, the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Player’s Association, is about more than bragging rights. The winning community will host a pre-season NHL game, be showcased on CBC’s annual Hockeyville broadcast next fall and will receive $100,000 to remodel its arena. With a $34.5-million arena ready to break ground in 2008, the boost would be a great way to start off the New Year, said Niagara Falls city councillor Jim Diodati. (more…)

New four-pad arena more than just ice sheets

Pink seats. A skate-up concession stand with a fireplace. A foundation built with the remains of buildings formerly on the site.

The new Niagara Falls four-pad arena complex, due to break ground in 2008 and be ready for skaters and hockey players by 2009, could make a name for itself in the sports world by incorporating those unique aspects into the design. (more…)

Niagara Falls – Site work has begun on the city’s new four-pad arena complex and if everything goes to plan the facility should open for the start of the 2009 season.

Crews are moving ground at the site, located at the former Cytec site on Fourth Avenue off of Stanley Avenue, and the city’s parks, recreation and culture department unveiled a sign depicting an artist’s rendering of the facility facing Stanley last week.

The sign states the site is the future home of the Niagara Falls Four Pad Arena Complex.
