They’re back from the ’70s
‘We came up from nothing’ Legendary duo Cheech and Chong play Falls casino
Posted By JOHN LAW REVIEW STAFF WRITER
One jokes that it’s all about paying his legal bills. The other says it’s about alimony.
Their fans simply say it’s about time.
Whatever the reason Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong decided to bury the hatchet, the legendary comedy team’s “Light Up America and Canada Tour” has been a hit since it launched in Ottawa on Sept. 5.
Maybe because everything seems strangely familiar, says Marin. When Cheech and Chong launched their stoner schtick in the late 1960s, America looked a lot like it does now.
“It’s exactly the same situation as when we first started,” he says, on the line from Los Angeles. “Unpopular president, unpopular war, economy in chaos. You just substitute Nixon for Bush and it’s the same.
“Cheech and Chong has sort of transcended every age category, every ethnic category, every economic category. It’s like … who likes butter? Everybody likes butter! It has nothing to do with how you think.” (more…)

Horrors!
As in, The Rocky Horror Show, comes to the Oh Canada Eh? dinner theatre next week as a fundraiser for AIDS Niagara
Posted By JOHN LAW REVIEW STAFF WRITER
There was a time “The Rocky Horror Show” was forbidden to Meaghan Chapin. But come Wednesday night, she’ll be the one doing the time warp in garters.
“It’s going to be an adventure,” says the 21-year-old North Bay actress who’ll play helium-voiced hellcat Columbia. “I haven’t seen it. My father wouldn’t let me watch it when I was a kid.”
Dad has respectfully declined his invitation. As has her grandma. Some shows, you love seeing your family in the audience. Others … well, it’s best they stay away. Lest they see their sons and daughters prancing around in high heels and underwear.
Thirty-five years after it debuted in London, England, Richard O’Brien’s “The Rocky Horror Show” is still an acquired taste. Unruly, bizarre and often incomprehensible, it’s also a decadent party for both patrons and performers.
The Oh Canada Eh? dinner theatre began staging the show six years ago as a Halloween fundraiser for AIDS Niagara. The first production was crude, with actors performing scenes next to video images of the cult 1975 movie.
Now, it’s a full-blown production with an elaborate set and a live band performing the tunes. Almost every show sells out, raising more than $25,000 for AIDS Niagara.
As always, cast members for Oh Canada Eh?’s regular show do a tour of duty with “Rocky” come October. Many return year after year. Others, like Chapin and 24-year-old Jean-Francois Grenier of Montreal, are getting their first taste of the campy classic. (more…)

Reunited comedy duo bring their Light Up Canada tour to Niagara for one night only Nov. 6
NIAGARA FALLS, ON, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ – Fallsview Casino Resort
announced today that Cheech and Chong – one of the most popular comedy duos
of the 1970s and 1980s – will bring their Light Up Canada tour to Fallsview
as part of the resort’s autumn line-up.
The reunited Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong will perform one
show only in Fallsview’s Avalon Theatre on Thursday, November 6, beginning

L.A. native Marin and Edmonton’s Tommy Chong met at a former Vancouver
topless bar that Chong had turned into a comedy club. The duo hit it off
and took their marijuana-themed act on the road, where they were discovered
in 1970 by a record-company executive. They released nine comedy albums in
the ’70s and ’80s, winning a Grammy for their 1973 album Los Cochinos. They
also made 10 movies between 1978 and 1985, including Up In Smoke (1978),
Yellowbeard (1983) and Cheech and Chong’s The Corsican Brothers (1984).
Their box office popularity ranks them among the most successful comedy
duos in the history of the movie business. (more…)
