Niagara Falls Hosts Clarkson Cup 2012

Clarkson Cup 2012 Comes to Niagara Falls

Are you one of thousands of hockey fans who will be flooding Niagara Falls this week for Clarkson Cup Action?

Named after former Governor General of Canada Adrienne Clarkson the women’s version of the Stanley Cup will reign over the falls from March 22nd to the 25th.  Teams from all over North America will be battling it out at the Gale arena round robin style. The top two teams will go head to head for the championship title. Montreal will be looking to repeat last years win against the Toronto Furies when TSN broadcasts the final game.  Between 20 to 30 Olympians such as Caroline Ouellette, Tessa Bonhomme, and Meghan Agosta will be in Niagara Falls, hopefully they have time to unwind on Clifton Hill.

There are plenty of attractions to keep busy with between or after games.  Tournaments can get hectic so it may be nice to relax with a ride on our world famous SkyWheel.  Soaring 175 feet (53 meters) over the Niagara Falls horizon you can get many memorable pictures from the fully enclosed gondolas.

We are looking ahead to another great week of weather for the Niagara region.  When you’re not in the cold arena, get into the sun and try your hand at a game of Dinosaur Adventure Golf.  As one of the newest attractions along the hill this mini putt is like walking into the age of the Dinosaur.  The fully functional volcano, realistic characters and sound effects will get you excited as you play the 18 hole course.

Boston Pizza is a great place to take a break.  Enjoy some great food with the family, and maintain the sporty atmosphere.  The kids will not get bored with wall-to-wall arcades, and our Strike Rock and Bowl entertainment centre.  Some ways you can save a few dollars while you are visiting is by picking up hotel packages and attraction passes.  The Clifton Hill Fun Pass is a great way to go for any family to save money on the most popular attractions.

Find out more ways to save, and all the fun things there are to see and do at www.cliftonhill.com

What a save!

By COREY LAROCQUE AND BRAD PETERS REVIEW STAFF WRITERS

Some quick stick-handling by Mayor Jim Diodati has brought Hockey Canada back onside for a rally to support the Canadian junior hockey squad as it heads into the world junior IIHF tournament at the end of the month.

“It’s back on track. It’s happening,” Diodati said during Monday’s council meeting, only a few hours after smoothing things over with Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada’s national teams director.

Hockey Canada, the organization that oversees the national junior program, scrapped the rally last week after a disagreement with Winter Festival of Lights organizers over plans to charge people $10 admission and sell sponsorships.

A last-minute conversation with a Hockey Canada official Monday saved the Dec. 24 rally. (more…)

Delays push arena opening to 2010
City revises construction schedule for four-pad Bob Gale Complex
Posted By Corey Larocque

An eight-month setback in the planned opening of the city’s four-pad arena isn’t cause for alarm, says Bob Gale, the businessman whose name will be on the city-owned recreation facility.

“I understand some of the delays that they are going through,” said Gale, after learning this week city hall revised the construction schedule for the Bob Gale Complex.

City parks director Denyse Morrissey recommended a new schedule that would see it open in May 2010 instead of September 2009, as originally planned. Council approved the new plan Monday.

“Am I happy with the delay? No. Is there anything we can do about it? No,” said Coun. Vince Kerrio this week. “I took the report at face value.” (more…)

Businesses jump to be attached to new four-pad arena
Posted By COREY LAROCQUE

Local businesses moved quickly to get their names attached to the Bob Gale Complex, the city’s proposed four-pad arena, says the head of corporate fundraising campaign.

All four ice pads are named after local companies, said Mick Wolfe, the chairman of the committee trying ot raise $2.4 million by selling naming rights for the $40-million city-owned facility.

Wolfe made that announcement at Monday’s city council meeting, less than three months after Bob Gale, the owner of a chain of gas stations, donated $1 million.

“We couldn’t have imagined a more wonderful response,” Wolfe said. “In a matter of weeks, we’ve nearly sold out the pieces.”

Wolfe announced $650,000 in new corporate donations that have been made since January. (more…)

Pink seats. A skate-up concession stand with a fireplace. A foundation built with the remains of buildings formerly on the site.

The new Niagara Falls four-pad arena complex, due to break ground in 2008 and be ready for skaters and hockey players by 2009, could make a name for itself in the sports world by incorporating those unique aspects into the design. (more…)

Niagara Falls – Site work has begun on the city’s new four-pad arena complex and if everything goes to plan the facility should open for the start of the 2009 season.

Crews are moving ground at the site, located at the former Cytec site on Fourth Avenue off of Stanley Avenue, and the city’s parks, recreation and culture department unveiled a sign depicting an artist’s rendering of the facility facing Stanley last week.

The sign states the site is the future home of the Niagara Falls Four Pad Arena Complex.

City picks Cyanamid site for arena

COREY LAROCQUE

Tuesday, June 26, 2007 – 07:00

Local News – Niagara Falls has an “aggressive schedule” to build its four-pad arena by 2009, parks, recreation and culture director Denyse Morrissey said, as city council voted Monday to take possession of the former Cyanamid property to become the new arena site.

“This will not be your standard arena. It will be very esthetically pleasing,” Morrissey said, outlining plans to council.

But the decision to go forward bothered Eric Gillespie, an environmental lawyer hired by the Unite HERE union. (more…)
