New Family Day Weekend Exhibit: ‘Great Reptiles of the World’ at the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory

Great Reptiles

Niagara Falls, Ontario – The Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory is pleased to announce a new exhibit, ‘Great Reptiles of the World’ for Ontario’s Family Day (or U.S., President’s Day) long weekend, February 19 – 21. Visitors will enjoy interactive displays and daily educational presentations featuring some of the most fascinating reptiles alive today, including a 100 pound alligator, a 200 pound python, an 80 pound tortoise, a giant monitor lizard and a giant snapping turtle.

45 minute presentations will take place four times daily at 9:30 & 11:30 a.m. and 2 & 4 p.m. followed by an opportunity to meet the keepers and reptiles from Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo from Ottawa, Ontario.

Entrance to the exhibit is included with admission to the Butterfly Conservatory: $12.25 for Adults (ages 13+), $7.95 for Children (6 – 12 years), and Children five and under are admitted FREE (prices in Cdn. plus tax). Free parking is available on-site. The Butterfly Conservatory will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the last visitors admitted at 5:30 p.m. Please call (905) 356-8119 for details.

After undertaking a brief restoration of the protective netting within the Conservatory, the Butterfly Conservatory will re- open on February 19. This fully accessible facility is located at 2405 Niagara Parkway on the grounds of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and School of Horticulture.

The Butterfly Conservatory is owned and operated by The Niagara Parks Commission, an agency of the Government of Ontario that has preserved and maintained the parklands and attractions surrounding the Falls without tax dollars since 1885. As the days grow shorter and the temperatures cool, Monarch butterflies are preparing for an arduous journey that many won’t survive.

Up to a million of the winged insects will soon migrate from their Ontario summer home to a winter roosting site in the Sierre Madre mountains of Mexico.

In celebration of the journey about to take flight, the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory is offering visitors a chance to participate in their expedition. (more…)

Parks passes, tickets have gone on sale

Seasons tickets and family passes for Niagara Parks Commission attractions went on sale Monday.

Niagara Falls & Great Gorge Adventure passes cost $39.95 for adults and $24.95 for children ages 6 to 12. This year, season passes are available for an additional $10 per person.

The photo ID card will be sold at Table Rock and the Niagara Parks licensing officer at Rapidsview Park (across from Marineland) from May 5 to Sept. 1. (more…)

Families looking to do something adventurous on the first Family Day holiday weekend can start with their taste buds. The Niagara Parks Commission will host its third annual Bug-a-Licious Insect Food Festival at the Butterfly Conservatory Feb. 16 to 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants can learn from Niagara College Culinary Institute chef Jeff Stewart (above, holding bamboo worms and hot peppers) how to find exotic delicacies in your own backyard and how cultures around the world use insects for food. Tickets cost $11 or $6.50 for children ages six to 12. Children ages five and younger are admitted free.

Local News – Summer looms, but kids don’t have to turn their brain off.

And if adults can save a few bucks, even better.

The Ontario government kicked off the third year of its Fun Pass program Thursday, with 1.4 million cost-cutting coupons distributed to elementary school students across the province.

The pass offers free children’s admission (with the purchase of adult admission) to 15 Ontario attractions, including two in Niagara.

“The pass helps boost tourism by bringing in new visitors who want to enjoy all that Niagara has to offer,” said Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor, who was visiting the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory with junior kindergarten students from Kate S. Durdan Public School. The butterfly conservatory and Old Fort Erie are Niagara’s two Fun Pass participants this year. (more…)
