Canada World Junior Hockey Rally Saved by Niagara Falls Mayor

Some quick stick-handling by Mayor Jim Diodati has brought Hockey Canada back onside for a rally to support the Canadian junior hockey squad as it heads into the world junior IIHF tournament at the end of the month.

“It’s back on track. It’s happening,” Diodati said during Monday’s council meeting, only a few hours after smoothing things over with Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada’s national teams director.

Hockey Canada, the organization that oversees the national junior program, scrapped the rally last week after a disagreement with Winter Festival of Lights organizers over plans to charge people $10 admission and sell sponsorships.

A last-minute conversation with a Hockey Canada official Monday saved the Dec. 24 rally. (more…)
