Niagara Falls should put the brakes on the purchase of buses for shuttling tourists around town and reconsider an electric trolley system before plans for the new people mover system leave the station, says former city employee Derek Costello.
But council members say their current people mover plan is affordable, will serve a wider area and is what the tourism industry wants now.
Electric trolleys are better for the environment than buses that burn fossil fuels. Their long-term maintenance costs are lower than buses with tires and moving parts have to be replaced more frequently than steel wheels or electric motors, Costello said. (more…)

The area around Niagara Falls was to be preserved as “a mecca of peace” for the “millions of overworked and tired humanity” to enjoy, according to John Langmuir, the second chairman of the Niagara Parks Commission.
A century and a quarter after it was created, the parks commission is still meeting that objective, said historian Sherman Zavitz, who quoted Langmuir’s vision during a walking tour of Queen Victoria Park Sunday. (more…)
“He thought about that for a while before he wrote those lines,” Zavitz said.
Sunday’s tour was one of the events marking this year’s 125th anniversary of the Niagara Parks Commission’s creation in 1885. Zavitz will lead a second free tour Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., leaving from the parks police station.

The Cowichan Valley’s famous hockey stick is now an attraction in Niagara Falls.
No, the Big Stick itself hasn’t moved, but a display featuring the enormous piece of sporting equipment, and including a story from the Citizen, now adorns the walls of the Guinness World Records Museum. Right next to a display about Wayne Gretzky and his multitude of hockey feats.
“They have a lot of NHL memorabilia in that corner,” said Dick Drew, who helped fight for the Cowichan Valley to get the Big Stick in the first place, then fought for it to be recognized as the world’s largest, and is now battling to get it honoured in museums and halls of fame. “It’s great looking. They estimate their attendance to be about a quarter of a million a year.”
The museum is located right in the centre of Niagara Falls, one of the biggest tourist attractions in Canada. (more…)

Before she got the party started Saturday night, pop star Pink had her eye on Niagara Falls.
“It’s my second time here,” said one of the top-selling female singers of the past decade.
“I went on the Maid of the Mist last time. I was considering the barrel this time.”
With hits like So What and Trouble, the 30-year-old Pink — real name, Alecia Moore — was in town for the grand opening of husband Carey Hart’s first Canadian location of his Hart & Huntington Tattoo Co. chain. The couple were greeted by hundreds of fans gathered at a VIP reception at Margaritaville.

Agency officially issues tender, gives bidders until November to submit proposals
The Maid of the Mist and nearly a dozen other companies interested in running boat tours on the Niagara River have until the end of November to make their case to the Niagara Parks Commission, according to the schedule the commission set for a request for proposals it issued Friday.
“It’s a very complex RFP. Proponents will need to spend a lot of time reviewing it,” chairwoman Fay Booker said during Friday’s parks commission meeting.
The commission issued the document early Friday that will invite companies to submit their proposals for running boat tours from land the Niagara Parks Commission owns on the lower Niagara River between the base of the Horseshoe Falls and the Rainbow Bridge. (more…)
