The Olympic flame will be in Niagara Falls for just a few hours Sunday, but the trail in its legacy will be a presence in the city for years to come.
The Olympic Torch Run Legacy Trail, a 1.3-kilometre path connecting downtown and the Clifton Hill tourism area is open for business, after an abandoned railway right-of-way was converted to an asphalt recreational trail.
“It’s great because it opens it up to so many more activities,” said Lisa Wilson, chairwoman of the trails and bikeways committee.
The corridor has been used by pedestrians and dog-walkers for years, but the new asphalt surface makes it easy for cyclists, people in wheelchairs and parents pushing strollers to use, Wilson said. (more…)

Speedway proposal goes to Region
Posted By RAY SPITERI Review Staff Writer
Over to you, Niagara Region.
The Canadian Motor Speedway proposal, which was endorsed by Fort Erie town council after a lengthy meeting Monday night, will be discussed during a regional planning session today.
And while it’s not expected to be as raucous and boisterous a meeting as Monday’s, how the region receives the project will go a long way in determining the future of the multi-million dollar proposal.
“I do believe it needs to be supported right now,” said Fort Erie Reg. Coun. Shirley Cordiner. “I think we need to look at we (in Fort Erie) may not get something this big for a long, long time. If we don’t support it, no one else will come to our community to look at opening a big project.”
Cordiner, who attended Monday’s meeting at the Leisureplex banquet hall, said she understands the nature of the objections raised by opponents, especially concerns about noise. (more…)
