“It’s the only way to travel,” said Bernie Kurek, a plumber at the casino, who was one of the first Niagara Falls residents to travel on a GO Transit train to Toronto.
His black Nikes were on the floor and he rested his sock feet on the seat facing him. Beside him, facing the other direction his wife Denise, a first-time train traveller, had assumed the same relaxed position as she listened to an iPod and watched Niagara’s countryside pass by. (more…)

Passports affecting plans for Friendship Festival

FORT ERIE – Rest assured, it’s still called the Friendship Festival. But manager Flo Odding wishes there was a friendlier vibe this year.
As feared, new border regulations have put a damper on this year’s festivities, as many American visitors – not to mention artists and entertainers – are unable to attend because they still do not have a passport. (more…)

What started as a joke about accepting Toronto’s garbage during its municipal workers’ strike could turn into a marketing scheme for the Niagara Falls tourism industry.
“‘Bring your garbage and stay – minimum two-night stay.’ I don’t know. It’s a neat idea. Someone may do it,” said Charlie Burland, the operator of two motels on Clifton Hill in the heart of the tourism district. (more…)

Loretto building ‘jewel’ of new project
Former 148-year-old school building would be preserved, flanked by skyscrapers
Posted By Corey Larocque
One of the most historic sites in Niagara Falls could become one of the biggest hotel developments the city has ever seen.
Owners of the old Loretto Christian Life Centre want city council’s approval to put three high-rise towers on the 7.6-acre property now occupied by the 148-year-old school and its parklike grounds. The next-door neighbours, an order of Roman Catholic priests, however, say they’re concerned about the “immensity” of the project and what it would do to their “oasis.” Click here for more and a photo of the development

Government money funds airport facelift
Posted By COREY LAROCQUE AND MONIQUE BEECH
A $7.6-million funding announcement for the Niagara District Airport is evidence money from Ottawa’s stimulus program is flowing despite concerns from some Canadian mayors it’s not coming fast enough to help lift the country out of the recession.

Will Springlicious lightning strike twice? – COLUMN
Downtown festival can build on goodwill it started in its rookie year
Posted By Corey Larocque
Last year’s April Wine has evaporated, but the buzz lingered all year. It’s time now to see if the 2009 vintage of Springlicious has the same intoxicating effect last year’s event did.
A year ago, people fell in love with downtown again – even if, in some cases, it was just a one-night stand. The first-ever Springlicious music and food festival last year gave people a reason to come downtown. (more…)
