Niagara Falls to be featured on Extreme Makeover Home Edition this Sunday

According to Niagara Falls Tourism, Niagara Falls will be featured on Extreme Makeover Home Edition this weekend. The episode is airing this Sunday, December 7, 2008 at 8PM EST.

This past Wednesday it was also reported by the Albert Lea Tribune of Hayward,

“Extreme Makeover” producers knocked on the door of the DeVries family on Sept. 30. The next day they were sent on a vacation to Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Larson Contracting and volunteer workers demolished their house Oct. 2 and began building a new home in about 100 hours. The house was finished on Oct. 5, and the keys to the new house were handed over Oct. 6. On Oct. 7 — the big day — the rain-soaked crowd of onlookers hollered, “Move that bus!” while the DeVrieses stood wide-eyed and open-mouthed at the surprise of seeing their new house. On Oct. 8, the family received more gifts from the community, including a new Ford pickup from Poet and ethanol producers.

Bob Muller chokes up a little as he talks about closing the business that has been in the community for 101 years.

He’s the third-generation owner of Muller Dry Goods, which is set to join a long list of businesses that have shut their doors in the historic Main and Ferry area.

“Unfortunately, the days of a dry goods store seem to have come to an end,” said Muller, who with his father, George, owns the business on Ferry Street. (more…)

Silver Mist rolls out two shows

The Beast is back. So is Beauty. But this time, they’ve brought the cat. The one in the hat.

Not content to just remount “Beauty and the Beast” for this Christmas, Silver Mist Productions is doing double time with a production of “Seussical” as well. It means two immense shows running concurrently, which is pushing cast and crew to the limits, said producer Linus Hand.

But it’s a growth spurt made necessary by demand.

“The timing seemed very good for it,” he says.

“I wanted to bring back ‘Beauty and the Beast’ because it did really well last year. But if I brought it back, (I wouldn’t) be expanding my audience any.” (more…)

Santa delivers fun, business to downtown

A sea of faces along Queen Street resulted in brisk holiday business for retailers Saturday.

With an estimated 5,000 people in downtown to watch the annual Santa Claus parade, businesses were ready with warm drinks, art galore and organic treats.

Many storefronts advertised holiday specials throughout the day and cafes and restaurants were packed.

“The parade was great, what little we saw of it. We were just so busy,” said Cathy Segeren, manager at Balzac’s Cafe. (more…)
