The History Of Sherman Zavitz
Saturday Special How the city’s past ‘became a real passion’ for a soft-spoken writer
Posted By JOHN LAW
You might assume some things about Sherman Zavitz, the city’s official historian. He’ll then correct you. Politely, as always.
One: He’s so low-key and reserved, he has never been in trouble in his life.
Wrong. He once got a detention in school. Maybe twice.
Two: He’s so calm and collected, he has never had to raise his voice.
Wrong. During his 35 years as a teacher, he had to “lay down the law” a few times. But he never yelled.
“You get the best out of kids when they’re not in fear of you,” he says.
Three: He actually paid attention instead of goofing off in history class. OK, you got him there. (more…)

Mr. Zavitz,
Have you ever heard of either Kathleen Howard a famous opera singer and actress who was born in Clifton in 1884?
Also, Henry Herbert Knibbs, a famous Cowboy Poet born in Clifton in 1874?
If so, I would like to know where they actually lived .

have a selection of receipts for 1955 for various companies in NF (whilst sorting thru parents’ files) and wondered if they were of any use to anyone…already scanned and can be emailed or kept originals…

hello mr. zavitz, i have a question about one of the street names in niagara. Its Church’s lane, off of portage road. i was curious of why that street was called church’s lane. Was it after a person? because the street has apostrophe ‘s’ or maybe for the obvious reason of there might have been a significant church on that road? if you have the answer to my question, i would greatly appreciate it.
thank you!

Mr. Zavitz, please, can you tell me the name of a ladies store on Queen Street, directly across from the Model Restaurant circa 1970? The owner’s name was Norm?
Thanking you so very much. Losing much sleep over this one.
