As the steel boat chugs towards the 52-metre wall of rushing water, the passengers begin a steady chant of cheers.

In unison, they pull the hoods of the blue raincoats over their heads.

As the boat came within 75 metres of the mighty Horseshoe Falls, the raincoats didn’t offer much protection from the driving spray.

With 748,000 gallons of water rushing over falls every second, remaining dry was not an option for these folks.

“They have a riot out there,” said Gary English, a captain with the Maid of the Mist, as the crowd erupted in another loud cheer as the boat slowly turned sideways.

“As long as they get wet, everyone’s happy.” (more…)

Ripley’s wants chance at Maid of the Mist
Unhappy that Parks renewed lease without taking bids
Posted By COREY LAROCQUE REVIEW STAFF WRITER, THE CANADIAN PRESS

The Niagara Parks Commission missed the boat by automatically renewing its lease with the Maid of the Mist Steamboat Co., says the manager of another company interested in taking over the fabled boat tours.

Ripley’s Entertainment wanted to discuss taking over the lease for the Maid of the Mist property but felt rebuffed by the commission’s reluctance to negotiate, said Tim Parker, manager of Ripley’s attractions in Niagara Falls.

“This is a private business on government property that has been operating far before the government got there. When the lease comes up … there should be an opportunity for other people (to bid on it),” Parker said in an interview about correspondence he had with Liberal MPP Kim Craitor on the issue.

Parker was “very disappointed” the commission apparently renewed the lease with the steamboat company that has operated the tours since 1846 despite the interest Ripley’s expressed in it.

“We would have thought that having two options, rather than just one, would benefit the Niagara Parks Commission and tourism in Niagara Falls,” Parker wrote in a letter to Craitor, a copy of which was obtained by The Niagara Falls Review.

Now, Parker wants political “intervention” by Ontario’s cabinet to stall its approval of the lease extension until his company -and others -can make competing proposals. (more…)

Niagara Falls: World class city or carnie town?
Posted By COREY LAROCQUE

Once a carnie town, always a carnie town? That’s the logic both downtown businesses and the tourism industry are using to get you to buy into events like Monday’s plunge from the Skylon Tower by daredevil Dean Sullivan and next month’s Daredevil Days festival.

Niagara Falls has a nearly 200-year-old history of stuntmen and stunt-women. As long as people with more courage than common sense have been coming to Niagara Falls, they have been defying death by going over, jumping from, walking across or riding through the incredible geographic features that define Niagara Falls.

When Sullivan rappelled from the Skylon Tower, it revived the dormant Niagara Falls tradition of cheating death to amuse the masses.

“You have to go back to our roots. They came here to see the daredevils,” said Wayne Thomson, a city councillor and chairman of the Daredevil Days festival coming up in August. (more…)

Tourism stuck in second gear
‘Highly erratic’ conditions show few signs of improving

Pain at the pumps could convince some travelers to cut back on spending and rethink their travel plans. But for those taking a stroll around Table Rock Tuesday, the allure of the magnificent falls was just too much to resist.

“It’s pretty awesome, such a spectacular view,” said Tom Morrisett, who brought his wife and kids to Niagara Falls from Richmond, Va. for the first time.

“A tank of gas to come here cost me about $65 and an ice cream bar $5, among other things. But going under the falls and experiencing the (Maid of the Mist) boat ride was something else. (more…)

City’s concerns being addressed, but liquor licence meeting still planned
Posted By BY COREY LAROCQUE REVIEW STAFF WRITER

A “substantial number” of objections to giving a Main Street bar a liquor licence prompted Ontario’s licensing agency to hold a public hearing, despite the fact some of the concerns appear to have been ironed out privately Monday night.

City council, the Main and Ferry Business Improvement Area board, and residents in the Drummondville area formally objected last month to a licence application from the Prey Night Club, saying it wouldn’t be in the public’s interest.

“There have been a substantial number of letters of objection that have come in. There will be a hearing,” Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario spokeswoman Lisa Murray said Tuesday. The commission has not set a date for the hearing yet. (more…)
