Gale blowing whistle on NPC
Complaints over parks commission decisions going to integrity commissioner
Posted By COREY LAROCQUE REVIEW STAFF WRITER
Bob Gale plans to use provincial “whistle-blower” legislation to ask Ontario’s integrity commissioner to look into the process the Niagara Parks Commission used to make some recent controversial decisions.
“My complaint is always (that) process must be honest and fair, especially when we are representing the provincial taxpayer,” Gale wrote in an e-mail explaining his decision to file an application with the integrity commissioner’s office. He said he planned to formally file the paperwork today.
Parks commission chairman Jim Williams wouldn’t say much about Gale’s plan to go to the integrity commissioner until he and commission staff better understand their obligations when there’s a complaint to the integrity commissioner. (more…)

Bridge commission manager resigns
Posted By COREY LAROCQUE REVIEW STAFF WRITER
Tom Garlock, the general manager of the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, left the organization’s top job Monday. The commission is calling it a retirement, but the 56-year-old manager’s abrupt departure took effect at the end of the day Monday and there’s no one immediately replacing him as manager.
“Tom retired from the commission yesterday,” Janice Thomson, the chairwoman of the eight-member commission said Tuesday.
“There will be a regular search to replace him as a general manager. In the interim, we have a very strong staff,” said Thomson, who is the head of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Chamber of Commerce. Thomson would not elaborate on the change because it’s a personnel matter. (more…)

Falling for Niagara
By MARY ALICE POWELL
SPECIAL TO THE BLADE
It’s a wow! It’s a wonder.
Niagara Falls is a magnificent example of Mother Nature at her best, surrounded by hundreds of manmade attractions.
After a ride on the Maid of the Mist boat through the falls, which is a must on almost everyone’s plans, the city of Niagara in Ontario and the surrounding region beckon with many entertainment choices for families.
The Maid of the Mist ride through the thundering waterfalls was the highlight of our three-day visit to Niagara. Each passenger was issued a plastic raincoat with a hood. Even then, those of us who chose to grip the railing for the best view, hold tight to our raincoats, secure the hoods, and protect cameras in plastic bags got drenched. The pounding, rushing falls were closer to the railing than we expected and the mist was heavier than pictures portray. It was a great half-hour adventure, well worth the $12.50 ticket, and even the six-hour drive to cross over the Canadian border into Ontario. (more…)

A tour offer you can’t refuse
Niche tour company peddles western NY organized crime lore
Posted By Tony Ricciuto
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – When the mob takes you for a ride, don’t expect to be home any time soon.
When Michael Rizzo, founder of Mob Tours, takes you for a ride, it takes about 90 minutes and some of the highlights along the way include former hideouts, hangouts and homes of Niagara Falls, N.Y.’s best-known criminals.
Some of the history he talks about on the tour relates to former mafia don Stefano Magaddino and his brothers, Gaspare and Nino, who ruled Western New York with iron fists.
“There are about a dozen locations that we go past, and we tell some stories about bookmaking and the history of Stefano Magaddino,” said Rizzo. “Everything is from the 1920s to the 1970s. We talk about prohibition, bootlegging, and we see some sites where there were some bombings, murders, bookmaking operations and where people lived.”
Rizzo, 43, a businessman, author and historian, came up with the idea about five years ago. He started research because there is so much history shared between the city of Niagara Falls, N.Y., criminal activity and the mob. (more…)
