Gambling on citizenship; Niagara Casinos president Art Frank now a Canadian

Art Frank is used to calling the shots at Niagara’s casinos, but his five-year-old daughter pulls rank when the family decides where to put down roots.

The president of Niagara Casinos is one of Canada’s newest citizens after being sworn in with 46 others at a citizenship court ceremony Wednesday morning in Niagara Falls.

“How many times do you get sworn in as a citizen of a country?” said Frank, wearing a loonie-sized Canadian flag pin on the lapel of his blue suit. (more…)

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Niagara Falls, one of Canada’s most prized tourism attractions, is luring fewer American visitors this year because of an unfavorable exchange rate, a Canadian tourism official said on Thursday.

The number of U.S. day trippers crossing the border into Canada to see the spectacular waterfalls has dropped 16 percent this year, Christopher Jones, vice-president of public affairs for the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, told a parliamentary finance committee. (more…)

Eating bacon and eggs at noon, Doug – “just Doug” – hauls chemical tankers over Ontario’s aging bridges. His most common route is the QEW.

Doug’s expression doesn’t change as he’s told about a report from the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario. Ontario’s bridges require $2 billion in repairs, the report said. Without government intervention, it warned, it is only a matter of time before an Ontario bridge collapses and sends cars plummeting, as has happened in Laval, Que., and Minneapolis. (more…)

Area eyed for environmental film fest

Niagara-on-the-Lake Lord Mayor Gary Burroughs has teamed up with a group that includes representatives from Osprey Media and National Geographic to work on bringing a film festival that focuses on environmental issues to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Burroughs and other local residents are on the board of directors of the Niagara Natural World Film Festival, which hopes to provide a combination of films and lectures for a seven- to- 10-day event in 2009. (more…)

Park Commission’s McFarland House part of Rotary’s Holiday House Tour

Celebrate the season Victorian style at McFarland House, Nov. 30 to Dec. 2.

The house, which served as a hospital for the British and American armies during the War of 1812, is a part of Rotary’s annual Holiday House Tour,

The tour raises money for the Red Roof Retreat and Doctors Without Borders.

It is also the oldest property owned by the Niagara Parks Commission.

On Dec. 2, the NPC will host its annual McFarland Christmas Open House Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Admission to the open house costs $4.50 per person, and light refreshments will be served.

When he was a high school student at NFCVI, Rodney Pentland stood on the theatre stage and made a vow to himself.

“I remember standing there thinking, ‘Some day I’m going to come back here and people are going to pay to see me,’” says the Niagara Falls comedian.

The school has a new name. Pentland nearly died. But several years later, he’s right where he wanted to be this weekend: The first annual Niagara Falls Comedy Fest. (more…)

It looks like a long-standing Niagara Regional Police call for relief from the federal government on border security issues will continue to go unanswered.

Minister of Public Safety Stockwell Day said Monday that Ottawa remains committed to working with local police services, but did not indicate the federal government would relieve the NRP of its border policing role. (more…)
