This year’s Sleep Cheap Charities Reap event will take place over four nights, from Monday, Nov. 26 to Thursday, Nov. 29.

Participating hotels will offer room rates of $35 per night for a standard room, $45 for a fallsview room, and $65 for a whirlpool or waterpark room.

Golfer talks about wine, winning

Mike Weir likes to think his success on the golf course and his advances in the wine industry are separate ventures.

But he doesn’t deny that more victories like the one he tasted during the Fry’s Electronics Open over the weekend will help sell more bottles that don his name.

“Obviously by winning, if people go through a liquor store they might say, ‘Hey, Mike just won a tournament, why not buy his wines,” Weir said in a conference call with reporters Tuesday. (more…)

Hotel union wins bonus dispute

Unionized hotel workers at properties owned by Canadian Niagara Hotels will get a $100 bonus on their paycheques following a Ministry of Labour arbitrator’s ruling.

Company vice-president Peter Wadsworth sent a letter to employees notifying them of the ruling on a grievance filed last August by Unite Here, the union representing about 500 employees at the company. (more…)

Organizers promise top-notch event for 25th anniversary

Mickey and Minnie will be there, but Winter Festival of Lights general manager Dino Fazio promises the 25th anniversary of the event won’t be a Mickey Mouse celebration.

“I have absolutely no qualms saying if (the Winter Festival of Lights) is not the best illumination festival in North America, it’s in the top two,” Fazio said following Thursday’s roll-out of the scheduled events for the two-month festival. (more…)

be appearing in an Ontario Provincial Offences Court to defend his Charter
right to engage in free speech on behalf of Canadian hotel employees, along

Labour President Wayne Samuelson. The trio will be defending themselves
against a rare private prosecution, initiated by Canadian Niagara Hotels (CNH)
after a September 2006 union rally at the Sheraton on the Falls in Niagara

Falls bathed in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

Niagara Falls will be bathed in pink, tonight, to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The waterfall will represent Canada during Estee Lauder’s eighth annual Global Landmarks Illumination campaign. It is the seventh time Niagara Falls has been lit for the campaign. The illumination ceremony will take place at the Illumination Tower Stage at Queen Victoria Park at 7 p.m.

Clinton’s coming to Niagara

Niagara leaders are hopeful a visit next month by former U.S. president Bill Clinton will shine a spotlight on the region’s economic strengths.

Clinton is scheduled to give the keynote address Nov. 13 on the opening night of the Ontario Economic Summit in Niagara-on-the-Lake. “It’s great for the overall positioning and selling of the region, particularly when we can do it in a great tourist destination like it is here in Niagara-on-the-Lake,” St. Catharines-Thorold Chamber of Commerce president Al Simpson said Tuesday. No more tokens at bridges

Bridge tokens will become a thing of the past now that the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission has switched to a prepaid ExpressPass.

“You can buy as much or as little toll as you want,” said bridge commission general manager Tom Garlock.

Tokens will still be honoured, but they are no longer sold at the Rainbow, Whirlpool or Queenston-Lewiston Bridges. (more…)
