And they aren’t happy.

About four minutes into a seven-minute promotional video titled: “Welcome: Portraits of America,” viewers are treated to the impressive sight and sound of water roaring over Niagara Falls. (more…)

Niagara’s Tunnel of Terror
The legend of the haunted Screaming Tunnel

It’s damp. It’s dark. And I’m waiting to hear a little girl scream.

Yes, I feel a bit goofy standing here. It doesn’t help that I’m in a rancid-looking tunnel with a lit match in my hand, because that’s what the story told me to do. (more…)

TV show coming to city looking for worst handyman

Does the world’s worst handyman hail from Niagara Falls?

The Discovery Channel series Canada’s Worst Handyman is coming to Niagara Falls next month in search of the nation’s worst handymen and women.

“Niagara Falls residents need the skills just as much as other Canadians and in some cases, that means getting right back to basics before handling a hammer,” said Andrew Younghusband, series host and writer.

Nominations can be e-mailed to handyman@propertelevision.com or call toll-free 1-866-598-2591.

Filming is scheduled to begin in January.

A RUNAWAY SUCCESS
Falls marathon attracts 1,100 competitors

The course records are safe for another year at the Niagara Falls International Marathon.

Chilly temperatures and strong headwinds resulted in slower than usual times at the 10th annual marathon, which starts in Buffalo and finishes in Niagara Falls.

More than 1,100 runners competed in Sunday’s race, but in the end it was Kenya’s Thomas Omwenga crossing the line in two hours, 33 minutes, 12 seconds to win the 2007 race by nearly three minutes over Michel Lavoie, of Laval, Que. (more…)

Has local tourism ‘fallen off radar’ of U.S.?

“When we were seated in the little ferry-boat, and were crossing the swollen river immediately before both cataracts, I began to feel what it was: But I was in a manner stunned, and unable to comprehend the vastness of the scene. It was not until I came on Table Rock, and looked – Great Heaven, on what a fall of bright-green water! – that it came upon me in its full might and majesty.”

- Charles Dickens, “American Notes,” 1842.

Travellers have been awed by the thundering cataracts since Father Louis Hennepin first clapped eyes on what many consider to be one of the world’s natural wonders more than three centuries ago. (more…)

The man in the centre of the group, with his right hand on his lapel, is H.R.H. Edward, the Prince of Wales, who was on an official visit to Niagara Falls that day. (more…)
