B.C. man jumps off Niagara Falls … again

By Derek Spalding

Thursday, September 27, 2007

NANAIMO, B.C. – For the second time in three years, Dean Sullivan rappelled down the cliffs of Niagara Falls without injury.

Still, the Nanaimo man is not officially recognized for his daredevil antics.

Sullivan – also known for bungee jumping off Vancouver’s Lions Gate Bridge in 2002 – loves the attention his stunts attract, so he said he was quite upset when the Niagara parks commission refused to acknowledge his 2004 jump.

In a letter, the parks commission told him they would not rank him with other daredevils who have gone over because he was not caught and charged for his jump.

Gretzky winery site in Falls close to being finalized

A land deal for the new Wayne Gretzky Estates Winery in Niagara Falls, just off the Queen Elizabeth Way, is close to being finalized, Osprey News Network has learned.

But the exact location of the Canadian hockey legend’s winery is being kept under wraps until the deal is sealed in writing, likely by next week.

An architect for the project has yet to be selected. The winery could be open as soon as 2008-09.

“We feel like we’ve got a great piece of land and a great opportunity to build a state-of-the-art winery that’s going to be a real destination spot and a fun place for people to go and learn more about wine, and also about Wayne,” said Gretzky’s agent Darren Blake, who is based in Scottsdale, Ariz. Two-casinos website ‘partisan:’ Ioannoni

Putting pressure on Premier Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals to commit to keep Casino Niagara open makes the city look like it’s taking sides in the provincial election and lobbying on behalf of the casino’s landlord, said Coun. Carolynn Ioannoni.

“It seems that we are wading into what’s a provincial-election issue,” she said during Monday’s council meeting. “It does look partisan.”

Ioannoni objected to city involvement in an Internet campaign urging McGuinty to make a deal that will guarantee Casino Niagara’s presence in Niagara Falls for 20 years. (more…)

City hall and tourism operators turned up the heat on Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty to make a long-term commitment to keep Casino Niagara open. The “Committee to Save Niagara Jobs” rolled out a website Friday with the message “Casino Niagara Must Stay Open.”

The site – www.saveniagarajobs.ca – shows a smiling, young girl with her family on a sofa in the background watching TV.

Century remembered in museum’s book

One hundred years. One hundred artifacts. And a book with 100 authors.

When it came time to commemorate the Niagara Historical Museum’s century mark, managing director Clark Bernat knew he wanted to spotlight 100 items from the 40,000-piece permanent collection. But which ones? And who picks them?

To avoid hard feelings or oversights, the museum board left the decision to prominent members of the public. Experts in a particular field, Niagara politicians, residents who donated to the museum – they all offer a taste of one of Ontario’s most fascinating collections. (more…)
