Local News - Wayne Gretzky, is the latest and greatest to put his name on a Niagara wine, it was announced in Toronto Tuesday.

Wayne Gretzky Estate Wines, emblazoned with the No. 99 on the label, the number Gretzky wore while piling up Stanley Cups and scoring titles during his amazing run in the NHL, is a partnership with Creekside Estate Winery in Jordan Station.

Gretzky was in Toronto at his restaurant, Gretzky’s, to launch the three wines that are immediately available — a 2005 meritage (red blend), 2006 chardonnay and a 2005 vidal icewine.

“Janet (his wife) and I have for many years wanted to fulfil a dream of launching a winery that makes world-class wines,” he said.

“And we are fortunate to have found talented winemakers who have already won numerous international and domestic wine awards.”

The Gretzky wines will be made by Creekside winemakers Craig McDonald and Rob Power. They are priced at $17 for the red, $14 for white and $45 for the icewine and are available starting today at Willow Heights Estate Winery in Beamsville with a further release through the LCBO in the fall. A portion of the proceeds will benefit less fortunate youth who want to experience hockey.

“Our products are very high quality and are reasonably priced because we want more and more people to appreciate the craftmanship of the Canadian wine industry,” said Gretkzy, who is Canadian and spent his early years with the Edmonton Oilers before getting shipped to the L.A. Kings in an explosive trade in 1988. He is now head coach and part owner of the Phoenix Coyotes.

It was also announced that a Wayne Gretzky Estate Winery will follow in a couple of years and that more wines will come on stream this fall.
