Local News – When Chris Benoit visited Niagara Falls with his wife five years ago, he couldn’t stop talking about the children.

“To be here talking to the kids – my biggest fans – is what it’s all about. There’s not a greater reward than putting a smile on a kid’s face,” Benoit told The Review in August 2002 in an interview on Clifton Hill.

Police believe Benoit, a Canadian pro wrestler with World Wrestling Entertainment, strangled his wife, suffocated his seven-year-old son and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself with a weight-machine pulley in his Georgia home this past weekend. (more…)

Local News – Michelle Lowther and her husband, Mike, remember climbing the 235 winding steps to the top of Brock’s Monument at Queenston Heights for the first time four years ago.

“You get a nice panoramic view from up there,” said Michelle, who was visiting from Oakville. “It’s really sad that the public hasn’t had access to it in so long.”

The monument was closed for repairs in 2004 by Parks Canada over concerns that small pieces of the limestone exterior could crack and fall off. The monument is currently surrounded by a green barrier fence, barring visitors from getting an up-close view of the 150-year-old monument.

Plans are in place to begin restoration work in April, 2008 at a cost of more than $1 million. Work was planned for this summer but the money wasn’t available, said Bob Andrews, Parks Canada’s superintendent of Niagara historic sites.

“It’s a lengthy process. You have to start approaching contractors in December and the money just wasn’t available that early,” he said, adding that starting the work early would mean cutting funding to other programs. (more…)

Local News – Lack of sponsorship has grounded this summer’s Wings and Wheels Niagara Air Show.

Organizers were forced to cancel the annual air show because they didn’t have the money to cover expenses such as insurance and lodging for incoming flight teams, said spokeswoman Ginger Blythin. “It was a tough call to make, but we just didn’t have the dollars,” Blythin said. “We’ve been offered plenty of in-kind donations, but you can’t pay insurance with in-kind.” (more…)

Local News – Cherries might just have their biggest fan in Jill Weiland.

She devours them plain, freezes them, throws them in just about any drink and even walked down the aisle with a guy who grows them.

“My joke that I tell people is I love cherries so much, I looked around for a farmer growing cherries that I could marry, so I could eat for free,” Weiland said. (more…)

Local News – Beverly Eckhart grew up in Buffalo. So did her husband, Sean Rooney.

They crossed the border often to visit Canada and Eckhart has a strong attachment to the Niagara region.

But unlike the Western New Yorkers who are passionate advocates of holding down the status quo when it comes to security at the border, Eckhart is equally passionate that the days of viewing the cross-border region as one big city with a river running through it are long gone. (more…)
