For a time, it looked as if Rise Against, performing Friday in Niagara Falls, might regret leaving Fat Wreck Chords for DreamWorks Records.

Around the time the band was releasing its first CD for DreamWorks, “Siren Song Of The Counter Culture,” the label was shut down and absorbed into Geffen Records — a situation that, to say the least, was less than ideal for the launch of the CD.
“I think when ‘Siren Song’ came out, we were still a very new band on their (Geffen’s) roster,” McIlrath said. “We didn’t know anybody over there. We didn’t even have an A&R person, actually, at all. We were just kind of floating around the office.”

Say good-bye to a Niagara Falls, Ont. landmark.

The Falls Tower Ride, a landmark along Clifton Hill and for many years a popular tourist attraction because of the bird’s eye view of the famed waterfalls, has closed and will be demolished — beginning early next week.

The reason?

The tower has been surpassed by the Skywheel ferris wheel, its Clifton Hill neighbor, that opened this year. Both the tower and Skywheel are owned by Niagara Falls developer Harry Oakes, whose company, HOCO Ltd., is in the early phases of a $100 million redevelopment effort along Clifton Hill.

Hotlines, radio station offered no help to tourists

By Aaron Besecker
Niagara Gazette
A Canadian rock radio station and out-of-service information hotlines probably weren’t what local tourism officials wanted to use to greet visitors crossing the Whirlpool Bridge into the Falls.

But that’s just what appeared on a tourist information sign that hung on Whirlpool Street until Wednesday afternoon.

The Gazette began inquiring last week about the outdated sign, posted on a fence in front of the American side of the Whirlpool Bridge.

Seven Wonders of WNY: No. 2 – Niagara Falls

For millions of people around the globe the mere mention of Niagara Falls evokes images of a great natural wonder.

Since Father Louis Hennepin became the first white man to describe the cataracts after his visit in 1678, the falls have drawn countless tourists to both sides of the border.

The numbers have often varied, but it has been generally agreed by tourism officials and park commissioners that an estimated 8 million tourists annually gaze in awe at the American and Canadian Falls, the rugged canyon below and the water-tossed rapids above and below the cataracts.

NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE – Peter Gill carries a 10-pound bottle of VQA wine from a corner table to a suitable location in his basement next to a few bottles of some of the world’s rarest vintages.

“This bottle is very heavy,” said the Shaw Guild member of the large bottle as he gently rests it against a wall. “There’s 25 bottles of wine here. Some from Niagara and others from as far away as Italy and Bordeaux, France.

“It’s quite a big collection.”

The collection of wine in Gill’s basement pales in comparison to the large collection of works of art which inhabit the same cosy room. Gill attaches price tags to the items as he prepares for the Shaw Guild’s first Fine Art and Rare Wine Evening Nov. 24.
