There’s something for everyone on Clifton Hill

CLIFTON HILL, Ont. – There he was – Brad Pitt.

It didn’t matter that he was a bit shorter than expected – surprisingly awfully close to my eye level. Or that Russell Crowe, apparently just a few inches taller than my statuesque 5-foot-5 frame, didn’t fare much better.

It didn’t matter, either, that these were wax figures. Just the idea of standing face to wax face with Brad, Russell, Denzel, Madonna, Julia and Herman Munster, too, was pretty exciting.

The life-size statues inside Louis Tussaud’s Waxworks are heaven for anyone who loves to stargaze. The fact that you can get up close to the majority of these intricately made wax figures is fascinating. (Be sure to bring your camera and strike a pose with your favorite.)
Walk through an elaborate garden party on the second floor of Tussaud’s where Madonna, Harrison Ford, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise are all lounging about in their Sunday best. Even if they are wax, it’s difficult not to want to size yourself up next to the waiflike Hollywood beauties (Halle Berry’s not that skinny, you’ll try to convince yourself).

Welcome to life on Clifton Hill, the amusement park-like playground just on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, Ont. Here, you can revel like a kid in wax museums (Tussaud’s, Movieland) and scare factories (House of Frankenstein).

Niagara Falls Tourism officials are calling 2006 a tough year

Tourism numbers reflect a tough year in Niagara
Visitors from U.S. down to lowest level since 1993

NIAGARA FALLS — Tourism officials in Niagara are calling 2006 a tough year as the sun sets on the industry’s busiest season. With numerous attractions including world-class golf courses, the Journey Behind the Falls, restaurants and gift shops along more than 1,700 hectares (topping 4,000 acres) of parkland along the Niagara River from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake drawing millions of people each year, the Niagara Parks Commission is one of the major tourism attractors in the region. But with a forecasted 12 per cent drop in traffic in 2006, which equates to a five per cent drop in revenue, even Niagara Parks is feeling the sting from a mediocre year, said Executive Director Joel Noden.

“There’s been a slight increase in Canadian tourists but there’s been a real decrease in American tourists,” said Noden. “Americans spend three times (in Niagara) what a Canadian would spend.”

Armoury to honour Falls’ rich military heritage

Robert Lapensee
Aug 18, 2006

NIAGARA FALLS — A plan to turn the former Niagara Falls Armoury into a military museum is on schedule and will probably be open by the Victoria Day long weekend in 2007, says the head of the city’s board of museums. The armoury, located at 5049 Victoria Ave., is undergoing a transformation from a recruitment and training facility to a centre which celebrates the military heritage of the city.

Garry Beck is leading a local group of veterans from the air force, the navy and the army, which will set up a selection of military-themed displays on the first floor of the old armoury. Beck said the group, Niagara Military Museum, has access to enough artifacts to fill the old armoury and plans to set up displays for each of the three military forces for when the museum opens. It also has plans to expand to include displays on cadets, aboriginal involvement in the military and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Niagara Falls Could Attain National Heritage Designation

Mark Leitner
BUFFALO (2006-08-17) Congresswoman Louise Slaughter was in Niagara Falls this afternoon, where she was joined by a number of Falls government officials and civic leaders to announce the introduction of House legislation that would, if approved, designate Niagara Falls and some nearby sites in Erie County as a National Heritage area.

Such a designation would pump federal funding into the region, heighten
national appreciation for the region, and hopefully act as an economic catalyst for the region.

A similar bill has been introduced in the Senate by Senator Charles Schumer.

$300M Resort Expansion Planned for Niagara Falls
August 14, 2006
By Dees Stribling, Special Correspondent

Grand Niagara Resort Inc., a partnership that owns and operates a new golf course in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is planning a C$300 million expansion of the facility. At its completion, scheduled for 2010, the 800-acre complex will include another golf course, a Hilton hotel, conference facility, time-share condos, homesites, a winery and a pair of manmade lakes.

“The biggest driver for the development is that the area is lacking a 12-month conference destination,” Graham Cocking, director of sales and marketing for Grand Niagara, told CPN this afternoon. “Also, there’s a tremendous demand for a full-service golf resort.”

According to Cocking, the Grand Niagara development will be the first such full-service golf resort built in Ontario in the last two decades. The development will also benefit from the fact that Niagara Falls is already an established tourist–and more recently, meeting–destination, he noted.
